The Word of the Lord

First Reading: Isaiah 58:7-10 This reading is a vigorous exhortation from the prophet Isaiah to lead lives of active charity and generosity. He promises that the Lord will be our “dawn,” our “rear guard,” our “light” if we share our bread, shelter the homeless, and clothe the naked. Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 2:1-5 Paul tells the Corinthians that he and they must not rely on the so-called “wisdom” of secular teaching and philosophy but on the power of the Spirit. Gospel: Matthew 5:13-16 Jesus reminds the disciples and all Christians that they carry special responsibilities to be “the salt of the earth.” They must not hide their light but show their goodness to all.

Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time February 9, 2020

“I came to you in weakness and fear and much trembling, and my message and my proclamation were not with persuasive words of wisdom, but with a demonstration of Spirit and power, so that your faith might rest not on human wisdom but on the power of God….You are the salt of the earth…you are the light of the world.’”

We are so accustomed to read the letters of St. Paul, or travel with him on his journeys, to consider this itinerant preacher as one who had it all together. As we listen to him today, he placed his trust on the Lord, the Spirit and God’s good grace or power. Although he denies the use of persuasive speech, our Christian lives are molded and formed by his great teaching. As I listen to the homily at mass, may I ask that that same Sprit and power be on the lips and in the heart of the preacher, to assist me in my growth as a disciple.

May the image of salt and light, strengthen and guide me as the words and Spirit move my heart.

St. John’s Family Page

The Book of Isaiah chapter 58 begins by Isaiah describing true fasting in the eyes of God. We often hear this passage during the season of Lent. Today’s selection tells us about the fasting that God desires: Thus says the Lord: Share your bread with the hungry, shelter the oppressed and the homeless, cloth the naked when you see them, and do not turn your back on your own. Then the light shall break forth like the dawn…(Is58:7-8) In other words, our religious practices and worship must be connected to living out the gospel of love. The just man is a light in darkness to the upright. (Ps112:4) When we think, speak and act in a loving way, we make God’s presence known to those around us. Thus the just person acts the same way God does. …my message and my proclamation were not with persuasive words of wisdom, but with a demonstration of spirit and power. (1Cor2:4) Like St. Paul we too are called by our Baptism to proclaim Jesus Christ to our world. St. Paul does so, by the power of the Holy Spirit. We turn to the Holy Spirit to live the gospel of love in a powerful way, not necessarily through eloquent words, but with the witness of our daily ordinary life – being faithful and faith-filled. Just so, your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father. (Mt5:16) God is glorified through our witness of love. Every person has an opportunity to be “the salt of

the earth.” Each of us can add “flavor” to the world, by using our time, talent and treasure in service of our brothers and sisters in Christ. May God bless us all always! Deacon Mike

Bereavement Support Group The Bereavement Support Group, which meets here at St. John the Apostle provides for a Christ-centered experience for those grieving the loss of a loved one. The group offers a caring, compassionate, confidential atmosphere for the sharing of experiences. All calls are confidential. Pre-registration is required. Want to learn more about the Bible? Frank Tremmel from St. John the Apostle has been leading a series of six sessions, covering the four pillars of the Catholic faith, as outlined in the Catechism of the Catholic Church, from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM in the Teacher’s Lounge. The remaining session is on March 3rd. Frank brings a wealth of experience to these topics. There is no cost to attend. Please contact Deacon Mike at 732-388-1253 or [email protected] to register or for additional information. Note: Completion of all six sessions will complete the Doctrinal Certification requirements for Catechist Certification.

Children’s Liturgy The Children’s Liturgy will be held at the 10:30 AM Mass. Families with children should just come to Mass as you normally do. Children will have their own Liturgy of the Word, including a special teaching just for them! Volunteer teachers are needed. If interested, please contact Deacon Mike: [email protected] 732-388-1253
