WE COMMEMORATE

The First Anniversary of Saint Josephine Bakhita Parish! We are approaching the first anniversary of the merger of parishes in Rocky Hill. How quickly me passed. In reflecon,

much has happened that allows us to be proud and hopeful. We have successfully accomplished the legal and financial

merger without many bumps. We successfully established one parish office. More importantly, we have discovered many

ways to come together in beauful and memorable ways: 1) a very successful parish picnic and other social events, 2) the

unity of the first penance, first communion and confirmaon programs and celebraons, Bakhita Bible Camp 3) the com-

bined and well!a,ended adult educaon/formaon programs (i.e. Bible study and speakers), 4) the Immacare shelter din-

ners and other shelter dinners and outreach programs, 5) the combined special music and worship programs for Tenebrae

and Holy Week, 6) and a myriad of other programs and ministries that dared to come together and found friendship and

worthy projects together. Certainly, there is more to do and issues to address that bring greater respect and unity of two

beauful and diverse communies. We can be especially proud of the Strategic Planning Process. The Process allowed us

to share our feelings about our sorrows, losses and grievances in a construcve and healthy way. More importantly, we

were able to focus our a,enon on our potenal and our vision for our future together. Now, along with our Parish Pasto-

ral Council and an implementaon commi,ee, we are establishing concrete acon steps to implement the six goals we will

strive for over the next three years. I am ever so grateful for your support, prayers and paence during this past year. In

the le,er of James, we are reminded, “Be paent, then brothers and sisters, unl the Lord’s coming. See how the farmer

waits for the land to yield its valuable crop, paently waing for the autumn and spring rains. You too, be paent and wait

for the Lord, because His coming is near. As you know, we count as blessed those who have persevered. The Lord is full of

compassion and mercy.” I never imagined 36 years ago, at my ordinaon, that the day would come so soon where such

change would appear (and more to come, I’m afraid). However, with the gross decline in church a,endance and the rap-

id decline in the number of ordained clergy; what was predicted has come true so soon. It is now a me of profound re-

flecon and creavity for the sake of the Kingdom, the Gospel and the Church of HarBord. I am reminded of St. Paul and

the early Church when they encountered great stress and change and he so firmly said, “nothing can separate us from the

love of God, that come to us through Christ Jesus.” Indeed, to be real, there are some challenges for us to see, embrace

and resolve, by the grace of God, in the year ahead: 1) a decrease in a,endance at St. Josephine Bakhita Parish, 2) there-

fore, a serious decline in giving (approximately $45,000 since January to May 2018), 3) a serious level of no to low parci-

paon by our younger generaons, 4) a resistance of sharing liturgical ministries and legimate styles of worship across

arficial boundaries, etc. I pray and hope we can address and resolve these issues in the days ahead…together.

Blessings and peace!!

Birth of John the Bap"st Sunday by Bud Ozar !The queson in today’s gospel, “What will this

child be?” concerns all parents. We spend years

trying to influence and shape the answer, hoping

our children will be “strong in spirit”, like the Bapst and

“blessing God” like Zacariah.

!!!!!!!

Point to Ponder: Authenc human development has a

moral character. It presumes full respect for the human

person, but it must also be concerned for the world

around us and “take into account the nature of each be-

ing and its mutual connecon in an ordered system”. #5

What you can do: Prayerfully consider making a dona-

on to the Catholic Campaign for Human Development

(CCHD). CCHD works to break the cycle of poverty by

helping low income people parcipate in decisions that

affect their lives, families and communies. CCHD offers a

hand up, not a hand out.

! IMPORTANT NEWS!Recently, the USCCB (The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops)

met for their bi!annual naonal conference. In light of recent revelaons

about the treatment of refugees and their children precipitated this wise

and challenging statement from the head of the US Bishops Conference,

Daniel Cardinal DiNardo. It is important that every Catholic take these words to heart, prayer and consideraon.

“At its core, asylum is an instrument to preserve the right to life.” The A,orney general’s recent decision elicits deep

concern because it potenally strips asylum from many women who lack adequate protecon. These vulnerable women

will now face return to the extreme dangers of domesc violence in their home country. This decision negates decades

of precedents that have provided protecon to women fleeing domesc violence. Unless overturned, the decision will

erode the capacity of asylum to save lives, parcularly in cases that involve asylum seekers who are persecuted by pri-

vate actors. We urge courts and policy makers to respect and enhance, not erode, the potenal of our asylum system to

preserve and protect the right to life.

Addionally, I join Bishop Vasquez, Chair of the USCCB’s Commi,ee on Migraon, in condemning the connued use of

family separaon at the US/Mexican border as an implementaon of the Administraon’s zero tolerance policy. Our

government has the discreon in our laws to ensure that young children are not separated from their parents and ex-

posed to irreparable harm and trauma. Families are the foundaonal element of our society and they must be able to

stay together. While protecng our borders is important, we can and must do be,er as a government, and as a society,

to find other ways to ensure that safety. Separang babies from their mothers is not the answer and is immoral.”

Also, I share with you a very simple and direct statement from one of America’s prominent priest witnesses, Fr. James

Marn:

“It has been recently said that separang immigrant kids from their parents at the border is biblical…it is not biblical to

treat migrants and refugees like animals, It is not biblical to take children away from their parents. It is not biblical to

ignore the needs of the stranger. It is not biblical to enforce unjust laws. Do not use the bible to jusfy sin.”

So I leave you with much to ponder, pray and act upon. Blessings and Peace!!

We interrupt our regularly scheduled ordi-

nary me music to bring you the Solemnity

of the Navity of St. John the Bapst. Cor-

responding music will be played and sung.

At St. James we will sing “For All the Saints”

to honor John the Bapst and Sts Peter and

Paul, Apostles, whose solemnity is on June 29. For All the

Saints" was wri,en as a processional hymn by the Angli-

can Bishop of Wakefield, William Walsham How. The

hymn was first printed in Hymns for Saints' Days, and Oth-

er Hymns 1864. However, the hymn tune we now sing

was wri,en by the English composer of symphonies, oper-

as, ballets, songs and many other hymns, Ralph Vaughan

Williams in 1906. Originally composed for the Feast of All

Saints, it has been described as “one of the finest hymn

tunes of the 20th century.” I agree and love playing it on

the St. James Ausn organ.

SAINT OF THE DAY: JUNE 24

ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST

John the Bapst was a contemporary of Christ

who was known for evangelizaon and his bapz-

ing of Jesus Christ. John the Bapst was born

through the intercession of God to Zachariah and

Elizabeth, who was otherwise too old to bear chil-

dren. According to scriptures, the Angel Gabriel

visited Elizabeth and Zachariah to tell them they

would have a son and that they should name him

John. Zachariah was skepcal and for this he was

rendered mute unl the me his son was born and named

John, in fulfillment of God's will. When Elizabeth was pregnant

with John, she was visited by Mary, and John leapt in her

womb. This revealed to Elizabeth that the child Mary carried

was to be the Son of God. John began public ministry around 30

AD, and was known for a.racng large crowds across the prov-

ince of Judaea and around the Jordan River. When Jesus came

to him to be bapzed, John recognized him and said, "It is I who

need bapsm from you." Jesus told John to bapze Him any-

way, which he did, whereupon the heavens opened, and the

Spirit of God was seen like a dove. The voice of God spoke, say-

ing, "This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased." John

instructed his followers to turn to Christ, calling Him the "Lamb

of God" and these people were among the first Chrisans. Fol-

lowing his bapsm of Christ, John's popularity grew so much

that he alarmed King Herod. Herod ordered him arrested and

imprisoned. John spoke with Herod on several occasions and

condemned his marriage to his halfbrother's wife. This con-

demnaon would be his downfall as King Herod promised to

grant a wish to his daughter. In revenge for John the Bapst's

condemnaon of her mother's scandalous marriage to Herod,

she asked for John's head. King Herod reluctantly obliged. John

the Bapst died someme between 33 and 36 AD. John the

Bapst's feast day is June 24, and the anniversary of his death is

August 29 and is somemes celebrated with a second feast.

John the Bapst is the patron saint of Jordan, Puerto Rico,

French Canada and many other places.
