The Word of the Lord

First Reading: Isaiah 60:1-6 Isaiah rejoices over the light and glory that will shine upon Jerusalem. He describes how the wealth of nations will be brought to Jerusalem, and travelers will arrive bearing gifts and praising God.

Second Reading: Ephesians 3:2-3a, 5-6 Paul explains to the Ephesians that the Gentiles are now co-heirs with the Jews. Through Jesus, they became members of the same body. Therefore, they would receive everything God had promised the Jewish converts if they followed Christ's teachings.

Gospel: Matthew 2:1-12 Astrologers from the east came looking for the newborn king of the Jews, which greatly disturbed King Herod. Herod wanted to kill Jesus, and asked the astrologers to return and tell him where Jesus was. The astrologers found Jesus and brought him gifts, but received a message in a dream telling them not to return to Herod.

They prostrated themselves and did him homage. Then they

opened their treasures and offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

What is the Epiphany of the Lord all about? We know that the Magi followed a miraculous star that led them to the baby Jesus. The word Epiphany means “manifestation”. Epiphany comes from the Greek words epi phanos: “to appear”. Jesus was manifested to the Gentile world, as represented by the three Magi. We can also say that Jesus’s Baptism in the Jordan river and the Wedding Feast at Cana (first public miracle) are also times where Jesus reveals Himself. What about the gifts that the Magi gave to Jesus? It seems that gold is an appropriate gift to give a king, but frankincense and myrrh seem a bit unusual. All the gifts are symbolic. At the time of Jesus, gold was regarded as the king of metals. Jesus is a king, but we know, not like earthly kings. Jesus ruled by love. His kingdom is the kingdom of God. His subjects are his disciples, you and me, who share in the kingdom. We have a responsibility to grow the kingdom of God on earth which Jesus started. Frankincense represents the divinity of Jesus. Incense was used by ancient peoples in their worship. The smoke, rising up to heaven, reminded them of divinity. We also sometimes use incense at Mass, incensing the altar, the Book of Gospels and at a funeral Mass, the casket. Finally, myrrh represents the humanity of Jesus. Ancient peoples used myrrh in preparing a body for burial. Jesus’s body, after His death was also prepared with myrrh by the holy women. Jesus, being fully human, experienced all human emotions, from joy, rejection, fear, sorrow etc. What is the practical message of the Epiphany of the Lord? We must lead others to Jesus. We must be a star, shining the light of Jesus Christ to those who don’t know Christ or have fallen away. In order to do so, we must be

walking in the light of Christ ourselves. May God bless us all always! Deacon Mike

CCD Schedule:

CCD is back in session on January 7, 8 and 9.

Bereavement Group

There is a support group for those grieving the death of a loved one here at St. John the Apostle. The group provides a Christ-centered experience for those grieving the loss of a loved one. The group offers a caring, compassionate, confidential atmosphere for the sharing of experiences. If you are interested in joining us, or if you would like more information about the group, contact Deacon Mike at 732-388-1253 or [email protected]. All calls are confidential. Pre-registration is required.

Children’s Liturgy

The Children’s Liturgy will be held at the 10:30 AM Mass. Families with children should just come to Mass as you normally do. Children will have their own Liturgy of the Word, including a special teaching just for them! Volunteer teachers are needed. If interested, please contact Deacon Mike: [email protected] 732-388-1253

Do you want to learn about the Bible?

Examine the four pillars of our Catholic Catechism: faith, morality, prayer and the sacraments through the Scriptures. St. John the Apostle’s Frank Tremmel will be instructing the session, providing us with an overview to help us know and experience the power of Word of God. The next session on January 8th will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 PM in the teacher’s lounge. Attendance will also qualify towards the Doctrinal portion of Catechist Certification. Contact Deacon Mike to register or for more information, 732-388-1253 or [email protected]

Congratulations to the Newly Baptized! Victoria Santacruz Amaris Pastrana

We saw his star at its rising, and have come to do him homage.

The Epiphany of the Lord January 6, 2019

Then you shall be radiant at what you see, your heart will throb and overflow, for the riches of the sea shall be emptied out before you, the wealth of nations shall be brought to you…all from Sheba shall come, bringing gold and frankincense, and proclaiming the praises of the Lord…Then they spread their treasures and offered him gifts of gold frankincense and myrrh.”

The season of holiday visiting is drawing to a close. Lights still shine, the manger scene is special today, and unwrapped gifts are still to be seen. The memories of visits, carols and delicious traditional foods are still fresh and happy. But what happens now?

Like the magi we have waited, searched and found the Christ. It’s our turn to bring gifts, not the three mentioned in Isaiah and Matthew, but a more precious gift, a more valued gift, the one that the Lord Jesus is waiting to receive from us. It is the gift of ourselves.

We bring joy, hope and happiness. Joy - because we have a Savior, hope - because our world can become better, happiness - because He has chosen me to bring Him to others. We bring an awareness that this Jesus comes again and wishes to accompany us in this new year. He can’t wait for us to get started. We can choose this route, or just simply take the decorations and put them away to gather dust for another year. The choice is quite clear. “They departed for their own country by another way.”
