2019 MASS INTENTIONS The 2019 Mass Intentions Book will open on Wednesday, July 11. We will be accepting your Mass requests, in per-son, for specific dates, between 9:00am and noon, in the Parish Center Conference Room. You can request a maxi-mum of four intentions per family at this time. There is a $10 stipend for each Mass intention. After July 11, you may stop into the Parish Office to request Masses.

Today is June 24, the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist. The Gospel reading is Luke 1:57-66, 80.

Tiny fingers and toes. A little yawn. A loud cry. An infant wrapped in swaddling clothes. "What will this child be?" It is a question every parent asks. As first steps are taken, as per-sonalities emerge, as a child shows interest in reading or drawing or climbing, the question is on our lips. "What will this child be?" This ques-

tion is asked as John the Baptist is born. Will he be a priest like his father? Does his strange, unexpected name signal a departure from that inheritance? Could Elizabeth and Zechariah ever have predicted what he would be? Under the tutelage of his priestly father, John "became strong in spirit." As an adult, John would retreat into the desert to preach repentance. He would attract a large fol-lowing and eventually attract the attention of the rulers of the day. He would point out the adulterous ways of King Herod and would find himself in prison. Eventually, he would be beheaded. But today, he is an infant newly born. On this special feast, we're reminded of the great humility required of parents. The character formation, the discipline and encouragement, the violin lessons and soccer practic-es -- every parental effort is a reflection of who the child is becoming. Even teens on a sure track transform under life's circumstances. Entrusting our children to God can be incredibly intimidat-ing. "What will this child be," especially when that transfor-mation lies outside of my control? John the Baptist's story might not have ended as his parents imagined. But he is celebrated as the greatest of the prophets, as the one who prepared the way for the Messiah. Here is the hope of all Christian parents: that our children grow up in such a way that when people meet them, they meet Jesus Christ.

PILGRIMAGE TO WASHINGTON, D.C.

St. John Paul II National Shrine - Washington, D.C

Join with our fellow parishioners on a spiritual journey to Washington, D.C., to visit two sacred places on Tuesday, July 17. The pilgrimage is being organized by Mr. Henry Graebe, who lived and worked in Washington, D.C. before entering St. Charles Borromeo seminary. Father McDermott also will attend. The first stop will be the Shrine of St. John Paul II, spon-sored and staffed by the Knights of Columbus. The Shrine houses a permanent exhibit about the life and ministry of St. John Paul II. There will be an opportunity for Reconcilia-tion, prayer before a first-class relic, and Mass at noon. The second stop is the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, the largest Catholic Church in the U.S., known for its unique architecture. Lunch at your own expense is available at the cafeteria before we begin a guided tour, with time to explore the various Marian Shrines for private prayer and devotion. The charter air-conditioned coach bus will leave St. John Fisher parking lot at 8:00am, and will return to Boothwyn by 6:00pm. Snacks will be provided on the bus. There is lim-

ited seating; reservations are first come, first served. The cost is $45 for adults, and $25 for children under 14. Regis-ter by calling the Parish Office at 610-485-0441, ext. 2, or on the website, www.stjohnfishechurch.org Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception Sanctuary

NEW EVANGELIZATION St. John Fisher Parish has formed a committee to meet during the summer to organize the launch of New Evangeli-zation efforts, highlighted by the ChristLife series, this au-tumn. Parishes are called to look to three groups in their work of evangelization. -- Practicing Catholics are called to deeper transfor- mation in their life with Christ. -- The parish is called to reach out to those Catholics who have fallen away from the practice of their faith. -- The parish is called to reach out to those who do not yet know the love of Christ, who do not believe in God, or who find faith irrelevant to everyday life. As a community, the parish must assume, as a fundamen-tal identity, the mission to bring Christ’s love to people who find themselves in any of these situations. ChristLife will help Catholics with the understanding and skills to better spread the Good News of Jesus Christ. The next committee meeting is Monday, July 2 at 7:00pm in the Parish Center. If you are interested, please join us in organizing for this work of the Church.

RCIA: The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults RCIA is the process inviting people to know Jesus more fully, to know God’s love for them, and to prepare them for the Initiation Sacraments of Baptism, Eucharist, and Confir-mation. The whole process of initiation for adults takes place within the community of the faithful, with us, the St. John Fisher parish family. Our community joyfully joins with catechumens and candidates in reflecting on the value of the paschal mystery. By virtue of our own Sacraments of Initiation, we have the responsibility to gather and nurture new members. The entire community welcomes and ac-companies aspiring Catholics on their journey of faith. Our faith community benefits from the initiation process by deepening the understanding of our own conversions. We are available to answer candidates and catechumens’ questions about God, the liturgy, on what we believe, and why we believe it. Candidates and catechumens will come to know God by the way we share our experience of gospel values with them. If you or someone you know has expressed interest in becoming Catholic or who has been Baptized but has not received the other Sacraments of Initiation, you may con-tact, Deacon Dan Bingnear at 610-494-3929, via email: at [email protected], or leave a message at the parish office, 610-485-0441, ext. 2.
