Commemorations for this week… Clement, Bishop of Rome, died around 100 Thursday, November 23, 2017 Clement was the third bishop of Rome. He is best remembered for a letter he wrote to the congregation in Corinth, still struggling with the same problems that led to Paul's letters to them. As did Paul, he focused on the need for love among Christians. Miguel Agustín Pro, martyr, died 1927 Thursday, November 23, 2017 Pro grew up in a time when the Mexican revolutionaries accused the church of siding with the wealthy. He became a Jesuit priest, and worked on behalf of the poor and homeless. Falsely accused of throwing a bomb at a government official, he was executed, but not before crying out "Long live Christ the King!" Justus Falckner, died 1723; Jehu Jones, died 1852; William Passavant, died 1894; pastors in North America Friday, November 24, 2017 Not only was Falckner the first Lutheran ordained in North America, but he published a catechism which was the first Lutheran book published on the continent. Jones was the Lutheran church's first African American pastor and carried out missionary work in Philadelphia which led to the formation there of the first African American Lutheran congregation (St. Paul's). William Passavant helped to establish hospitals and orphanages in a number of cities and was the first to introduce deaconesses to the work of hospitals in the United States. Isaac Watts, hymnwriter, died 1748 Saturday, November 25, 2017 Thought by many to be the greatest hymnwriter in the English language, Watts as a youth was critical of the quality of the metrical psalter of the time. He wrote about 600 hymns—many based on the psalms, but others that are not.

Grateful For God’s Gifts

Greeting, Announcements & Sharing of Joys & Concerns … Pastor Temple Talk… Diane Brosius…Thankful For Your Stewardship In The Church

Prelude … “Give Thanks” … Arr. By Mark Hayes

*A Litany of Gratitude … Psalm 95:2, 4-7 … Read Responsively

P Let us come into God’s presence with thanksgiving;

C let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise!

P In his hand are the depths of the earth;

C the heights of the mountains are his also.

P The sea is his, for he made it,

C and his hands formed the dry land.

P Oh, come, let us worship and bow down;

C let us kneel before the Lord, our Maker.

P For he is our God,

C and we are the people of his pasture, the sheep of his hand.

*Gathering Music… Come, Ye Thankful People, Come

Organ/Piano Duet: Suzanne Tilley, Jeff Byers

with the Choir and Congregation singing the following Verse

Come, ye thankful people, come; raise the song of harvest home. All be safely gathered in

ere the winter storms begin; God, our maker, doth provide for our wants to be supplied.

Come to God’s own temple, come; raise the song of harvest home.

*Confession and Absolution (based on Ephesians 5:1-2, 7-20)

P Our Lord wants us to walk in love as his dearly treasured children; to follow the example of

Christ’s selfless sacrificial offering.

C But all too often we have chosen the ways of selfishness and ingratitude; we have chosen

the unfruitful works of darkness instead of the fruit of light. Enable us by your Spirit, O

Lord, to acknowledge our waywardness, to look carefully at our actions and discern what

is good, right, true and pleasing to you. Raise us up renewed to walk as children of light

who make best use of the gifts you have given.

P Give thanks, for Christ forgives you and frees you! He banishes your darkness and shines the

light of his grace upon you. Rise up renewed by his Spirit to encourage one another in word

and deed.

C Let us give constant thanks for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus

Christ, and let us serve each other out of reverence for Christ. Amen.

*Hymn of Praise … Now Thank We All Our God

Now thank we all our God, with hearts and hands and voices,

Who wondrous things has done, in whom this world rejoices;

Who from our mothers’ arms has blessed us on our way

With countless gifts of love, and still is ours today.

Oh, may this bounteous God through all our life be near us,

With ever joyful hearts and blessed peace to cheer us;

Page 9: Calvary Evangelical Lutheran Church Of Dover PA Bulletin.pdfcost will be $8.50/plant. Roberta Downs and Donna Sharp will take your orders...they will also be accepting ... Harlacher

9

And keep us in his grace and guide us when perplexed;

And free us from all ills, in this world and the next.

All praise and thanks to God the Father now be given;

The Son, and him who reigns with them in highest heaven;

The one eternal God, whom earth and heav’n adore;

For thus it was, is now, and shall be evermore.

*Prayer of the Day … Pastor with Congregational Response

P Father of Life, when we survey this world you made and sustain in love, what more can we

do than stand in wonder and receive your gifts with gratitude. As we behold the grace you

lavish upon us through Jesus your Son, and by your Spirit bring forth the fruits of faith, so

inspire us anew to serve you in humble trust and thankful praise. Lead us to live out our

callings and use your gifts so that others may glorify you with us and that together we may

all give thanks to you, your Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

*Hymn … In Unison

All the world is God’s own field, fruit unto his praise to yield; Wheat and tares together

sown, unto joy or sorrow grown. First the blade and then the ear, then the full corn shall ap-

pear. Lord of harvest, grant that we wholesome grain and pure may be.

For the Lord, our God, shall come and shall take his harvest home, From his field shall in that

day all offenses purge away, Give his angels charge at last in the fire the tares to cast, But the

fruitful ears to store in his garner evermore.

Even so, Lord, quickly come to thy final harvest home; Gather thou thy people in, free from

sorrow, free from sin, There, forever purified, in thy garner to abide: Come

with all thine angels, come, raise the glorious harvest home.

Old Testament Reading … Deuteronomy 33:13-16a … Lay Reader

Of Joseph Moses said, “Blessed by the Lord be his land, with the choicest gifts of heaven

above, and of the deep that crouches beneath, with the choicest fruits of the sun and the

rich yield of the months, with the finest produce of the ancient mountains and the abun-

dance of the everlasting hills, with the best gifts of the earth and its fullness and the favor

of him who dwells in the bush.”

Responsive Psalm … Psalm 98:1-3 … Lay Reader and Congregation Read Responsively

P O sing to the Lord a new song,

C for he has done marvelous things!

P The Lord has made known his salvation;

C he has revealed his righteousness in the sight of the nations.

P He has remembered his steadfast love and faithfulness;

C all the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God.

Epistle Reading … Colossians 3:12-17 … Lay Reader

Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness,

humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint

against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must for-

give. And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.

And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body.

And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one

another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in

your hearts to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of

the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

*Holy Gospel … Matthew 7:7-12… Pastor

P Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.

For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it

will be opened. Or which one of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? Or

if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent? If you then, who are evil, know how to give

good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good

Page 11: Calvary Evangelical Lutheran Church Of Dover PA Bulletin.pdfcost will be $8.50/plant. Roberta Downs and Donna Sharp will take your orders...they will also be accepting ... Harlacher

11

things to those who ask him! So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to

them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.

Children’s Sermon … Pastor

*Sermon Hymn … Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee

Joyful, joyful, we adore thee, God of glory, Lord of love; Hearts unfold like flow’rs before

thee, praising thee, their sun above. Melt the clouds of sin and sadness; drive the gloom of

doubt away; Giver of immortal gladness, fill us with the light of day!

All thy works with joy surround thee, earth and heav’n reflect thy rays, Stars and angels sing

around thee, center of unbroken praise. Field and forest, vale and mountain, flow’ry mead-

ow, flashing sea, Chanting bird and flowing fountain call us to rejoice in thee.

Thou art giving and forgiving, ever blessing, ever blessed, Wellspring of the joy of living,

ocean depth of happy rest! Thou our Father, Christ our Brother, all who live in love are thine;

Teach us how to love each other; lift us to the joy divine.

have blessed them. In your gracious name, we pray. Amen.

The bread we

break and the wine we pour come from you. As we eat and drink with thanksgiving, fill

us with your love; let that love flow through us to others; and join us to the saints before

us in a holy and boundless communion; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

*The Great Thanksgiving… Pastor with Congregational Responses The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. *Proper Preface… Pastor It is indeed right and salutary that we should at all times and in all places offer thanks and praise to you, O Lord, Holy Father, through Christ our Lord; who on this day overcame death and the grave, and by His glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlast ing life. And so, with the church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn:

suffering, death, and resurrection. May this sacrament of your body and blood so work

in us that the fruits of your redemption will show forth in the way we live, for you live

and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

*Benediction… Pastor

Now receive the benediction from our Lord, the great Giver of all good gifts: The Lord bless

you and keep you. The Lord make his face shine upon you and be gracious unto you. The

Lord look upon you with favor and grant you his gift of + peace. Amen.

*The Parting Hymn is sung by the congregation to the tune Wie Lieblich Ist Der Maien 76 76 D:

Sing to the Lord of harvest, sing songs of love and praise;

With joyful hearts and voices your alleluias raise.

By him the rolling seasons in fruitful order move;

Sing to the Lord of harvest a joyous song of love.

God makes the clouds rain goodness, the deserts bloom and spring,

The hills leap up in gladness, the valleys laugh and sing.

God fills them with his fullness, all things with large increase;

He crowns the year with blessing, with plenty and with peace.

Bring to this sacred altar the gifts his goodness gave,

The golden sheaves of harvest, the souls Christ died to save.

Your hearts lay down before him when

at his feet you fall,

And with your lives adore him who

gave his life for all.
