Dear Friends in Christ,
I hope you are well and staying safe as you read this letter. I am sharing here with you what I wrote in my journals last week.
We have not fully admitted it yet. We talked about this virus, spread countless information about prevention, contamination, guidelines, protocols and whatever we thought needed to be shared. We resorted to different ways of coping with it—from sanitation to isolation, from avoidance to quarantine, from putting on masks to physical distancing. We even tried to trace its source or sources—laboratory or wild life market?
But, the elephant in the room, if I may call it, is this: where have we gone wrong? Where did it hurt most? Allow me to apply the six main points in journalism and news reporting.
Who: that’s us, billions of us affected right now in this planet What: Pandemic When: End of 2019 till the present. That was when some of us became aware of this virus Why: A lot of answers to this: cleansing, healing, wake-up call, purging, priority check, break from normalcy How: Disruption in all aspects of our lives And where? Not from a specific country or continent. But we have gone wrong in the place that God seeks us most—in our human hearts. That is closest to what is now hurting us the most—the air we breathe.
Ironically, the air that we inhale may sometimes carry the virus we could accidentally ingest. Physiology lessons tell us that when air passes through our nostrils and pumps its way to our lungs, the human heart is aided greatly. The heart is primordial and primal. Once it stops, death intrudes. Things that bother us, problems that pester us and all the other worries and concerns that trouble us have its source and its cure in the recesses of our hearts.
It is necessary, therefore, to seek within and inside us what brought out this crippling and debilitating virus. The blame should not be confined to a specific class of people, or race, or to those who spread the disease, knowingly or unknowingly.
We can only blame ourselves for not listening to what our hearts dictate. Had we listened, before we were forcefully quarantined, then we would have realized that health is more important than wealth (money is not enough to compensate for anything invisible), family is more essential than self (the Christian command) and time spent with our loved ones make our days (and even better nights) more complete than frivolous hobbies and pastimes.
Had we listened, then we would have realized that we don’t need to rush in life, that we need to pause from time to time and value the persons we share lives with, that our destination in the next life becomes more precious and lasting when journeyed together.
Had we listened earlier, then we would have realized that goodness is more contagious than the virus itself, that heroes abound in every corner and work place in society, that we can all unite for a common cause. Our hearts are aching now to be connected physically, than virtually related. The Internet cannot supply the human touch, cannot codify a hug, cannot correlate, irrespective of even a common handshake.
Where did we go wrong at this point of our lives, close to a quarter of a century past the millennium? Where have we gone wrong? The heart.
We did not listen in the past to the Voice of the Spirit coming to our hearts, tracing itself up to our windpipes and nostrils, to the air we breathe that keeps us alive (and is now filtered by the masks we wear). It is a momentous time to get rid of all the vices that pepper the human heart. Unless we let that happen, then waves of viruses will still be widespread and prevalent. There will never be an end.
If we persist in not listening to Him who supplies the air we breathe, then we remain apart from the One who heals the viruses of our hearts. He it is—the One who truly wears the crown.
You are always remembered in my Masses and prayers! Blessings always.

Here’s One Positive Encouragement
Written by a fellow parishioner
God raised up great leaders like Moses and Joshua to do his work for his people. So too, can great leaders arise up in me of need in Our Lady of Hope Parish to help lead our parish and community in these mes of need.
When our two parishes were merging, we used ques onnaires and asked for volunteers for ministries and commi ees. Looking at our responses, we found many were willing to help but few were willing to lead.
Our parish, our community, and our world need people willing to lead and serve with LOVE. Love being the primary reason for whatever they intend to accomplish. Most people are afraid to help or lead a group for fear of not looking professional whatever that means, or that they will make mistakes and look foolish.
When my son and I were working together he would say “Dad, you’re not ac ng like a professional”. I would ask how is a professional to act and he would say “you know professionally”. I conveyed knowledge to my customers with truthfulness, kindness and loved what I did. Because of this many appreciated my demeanor and told me so. Why am I telling you this, so you will not be afraid of what people think of you even family. Do what you LOVE to do, grab onto a problem or situa on with enthusiasm and help solve it by being a volunteer or a leader. There are many situa ons and opportuni es you can avail yourself of to help others. Take advantage of these trying mes to show God and others what you are made of. Become ac ve, live the doctrine of LOVE. What our parish and our community will be like in the future depends on your work today.
