Worship Statement

Worship is the stage upon which the divine drama of redemption is played out. Our desire is for our worship to reflect both the reverence for God (Ps. 29:2) and the joy of the gospel (Luke 2:20). We revere God because He is holy (Isa. 6:3). We are filled with joy because of how the gospel frees and changes us (Acts 3:8). When you worship with us, you can expect to see rich theology embodied in God-centered worship that engages our hearts (Acts 2:37).

United with other believers, the church throughout history, angels, and all the company of heaven we offer praise to the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Our worship is a foretaste of the heavenly bliss we will enjoy when we enter into His presence eternally (Rev. 5:9-13).

The special ways that God gives us His grace, the Word and the Sacraments (the Lord’s Supper and baptism), are the focus of our worship (Acts 2:42). The preaching of the Word is straight from the Bible and the sermons are Christ-centered. The Lord's Supper affects our hearts and renews our dependence on God and is celebrated weekly (I Cor. 11:23-26).

Surrounding the Word and the Supper is our participation in praise through corporate confession of our sins, the assurance of the pardon of God in Christ Jesus, offerings, and the singing of praise in Biblical styles (I Cor. 14:26, 33, 40) that reflect the gifts God has bestowed upon our particular Body. We strive to worship God by music with lyrics reflecting the timeless propositional truth of Scripture regardless of the era in which the music and lyrics were written. Our praise is designed to glorify God through the edification of His saints by focusing all present on the message of Jesus Christ and Him crucified (I Cor. 1:23; 2:2) Biblical, Reformed, and gospel-driven worship glorifies God, transcends style, edifies the church, and evangelizes the unbeliever (John 16:8; Rom 10:14-17).

But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to innumerable angels in festal gathering, and to the assembly of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven, and to God, the judge of all, and to the spirits of the righteous made perfect, and to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel. Heb. 12:22-24

Worship Service

Greeting & Announcements ELDER

Call to Worship: (Standing) ELDER

To you I lift up my eyes, O you who are enthroned in the heavens! Behold, as the eyes of servants look to the hand of their master, as the eyes of a maidservant to the hand of her mistress, so our eyes look to the Lord our God, till he has mercy upon us (Psalm 123:1-2).

Hymn of Praise: No. 398 (Standing)

“Christ, Whose Glory Fills the Skies” The rising sun will come to us from heaven to shine on those living in darkness. Luke 1:78

God’s Word Examines Our Hearts: (Seated) ELDER

Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.” And he who was seated on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” Also he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true” (Revelation 21:1-5).

Confession of Sin (Seated, Unison) ELDER

Father, I confess that I rarely think about Heaven. The concerns of this present age erode my strength until one day simply melts into the next. It is not that I live ‘badly’, but inanely. I am too easily conformed to the image of this world. Father, please increase my TRUST in Your Promises that Heaven is a real place and that by Your grace, through Jesus’ finished work, I will spend eternity there with You and thus have purpose while here on earth.

Silently Confessing Our Personal Sins (Seated)

Assurance of Pardon (Seated) ELDER

“Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. In my Father's house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. And you know the way to where I am going.” Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?” Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him” (John 14:1-7).

Worship of God through Tithes & Offerings (Seated)

“I Asked the Lord” Words: John Newton (alt. Laura Taylor). Music: Laura Taylor

Reading God’s Word (Standing) KEITH HOWARD

Hebrews 11:20-22

So when God desired to show more convincingly to the heirs of the promise the unchangeable character of his purpose, he guaranteed it with an oath, 18so that by two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to hold fast to the hope set before us (6:17-18). 20By faith Isaac invoked future blessings on Jacob and Esau. 21By faith Jacob, when dying, blessed each of the sons of Joseph, bowing in worship over the head of his staff. 22By faith Joseph, at the end of his life, made mention of the exodus of the Israelites and gave directions concerning his bones (11:20-22).

• Communion, also called The Lord’s Supper, is the family meal of Christians. We invite all

committed followers of Jesus Christ to partake of this sacrament: those who are baptized members of a congregation which proclaims the gospel, who are at peace with God and with their neighbor, and who seek strength to live more faithfully for Christ. If you are not a Christian, or if you are not prepared to share in this meal, we encourage you to spend this time in prayer. We hope that this time is helpful to you as you consider your relationship with Jesus Christ and with His people, the church.

• Baptized children of an age appropriate to understand the preached Word who have been admitted to the Supper by the leadership of a congregation that proclaims the Gospel, or who have been admitted to the table by our Session, are invited to partake. Please see a member of the Session for information on communing membership for your children.

• Both wine and grape juice are offered for communion. The wine is served in the outer ring of the communion trays and the center rings contain juice. After the Lord’s Supper, elders will be available at the front of the auditorium for prayer or to respond to questions.

Communion Prayers

Prayer for Those Searching for Truth: Lord Jesus, you claim to be the way, the truth and the life. If what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and open to me the reality of who you are. Grant that I might be undaunted by the cost of following you as I consider the reasons for doing so. Give me an understanding for you that is coherent, convincing, and leads to the life that you promise. Amen.

Prayer of Belief: Lord, Jesus, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever before believed, but through you, I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared to hope. I thank you for paying my debt, bearing my punishment on the cross and offering forgiveness and new life. Knowing that you have been raised from the dead, I turn from my sins and receive you as my savior. Amen.

Prayer of Struggling Against Sin: Lord Jesus, grant that I may see in you the fulfillment of all my needs, and may turn from every false satisfaction to find complete satisfaction in you. Enable me to lay aside the sin that clings so closely to me, and run with perseverance the race that you have set before me, looking only to you, the pioneer and champion of my faith. Amen.

Hymn of Response: Hymn No. 616 (Standing)

“Leaning on the Everlasting Arms” The eternal God is your refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms. Deut. 33:27
