From Our Pastor:From Our Pastor:In this Sunday’s Gospel, Saint Peter tries to deny the Lord His Passion – “God forbid,

Lord! No such thing shall ever happen to you.” – where, although it’s difficult for him to comprehend at the time, Saint Peter, in effect, is denying the possibility of true joy (Matthew 16:21-27). As Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ taught us, the only way to everlasting joy is through His Cross and Resurrection – Saint Peter, our first pope, did not yet understand this in his encounter with Jesus in today’s Gospel, but he would soon understand (for Peter would eventually be martyred, crucified, rather than deny the Faith, rather than give up his faith in and love for God – as Jesus foretells in John 21). Indeed, Jesus said to His disciples, “Whoever wishes to come after Me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow Me” (Matthew 16:24). There is no Resurrection without the Crucifixion – so, when we look upon a crucifix, we look upon a reminder of God’s love for us ( John 3:16-21): that by His One Sacrifice on the Cross, Jesus has redeemed the world and wrought for us life eternal – if we would, by His grace, just follow Him (Matthew 16:21-27; Luke 9:23; John 14:1-6).

“It is only by enduring himself, by freeing himself through suffering from the tyranny of egoism, that man finds himself, that he finds his truth, his joy, his happiness,” Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI has said (Co-Workers of the Truth, Ignatius Press). You see, when we unite our suffering with Jesus’ redemptive suffering on the Cross, then our suffering takes on meaning, for it becomes redemptive suffering. Therefore, we eagerly offer not only our suffering, but our entire being as a living sacrifice to God, as Saint Paul reminds us this Sunday (Romans 12:1-2). For, no matter how much our sharing in Christ’s Cross may make us an object of the world’s laughter and mockery, we know that our need to live our relationship with the Lord will become like fire burning in our heart ( Jeremiah 20:7-9). “The Cross forces us to look upon the fact that we are loved by God,” Pope Benedict XVI has said. “The Cross becomes a new center of gravity for the bringing together of what is divided… There is, in fact, no other way in which one can be saved than by the Cross.” At every Mass, we stand at the foot of the Cross, where the One Sacrifice of Christ is made present on the altar, by the power of God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, working through the unworthy priest. Jesus gives us Himself in the Holy Eucharist, in what still looks like bread and wine but has become the real, true and substantial Presence of Jesus Christ – body, blood, soul and divinity. When we enter into this awesome Mystery of the Mass, into the Passion, Death, Resurrection and Ascension of Jesus, we find the meaning of our life, we find Truth and Love and everlasting Joy.

As we’ve begun a new school year here at Saint Clement Parish, let us pray for God’s blessings on all our students, families, faculty and staff, that we will all grow in the joy of knowing, loving and serving God, and in our love for our neighbor. “So we know and believe in the love God has for us. God is love, and those who abide in love abide in God, and God abides in them” (1 John 4:16).

With peace and prayers in Christ,Fr. William Vernon

GO MAKE DISCIPLES“[Preaching the Gospel to others] may seem a daunting task,

but it always has been. Even for the first disciples and Apostles it was so. But each of those first women and men reached out, gave witness, and drew new disciples. And those new disciples, in turn, did the same…and they did the same, and so on and so on, until the precise individuals who were effective in preaching the Good News to us. In the Church, it is always about an hour after sunrise. Mary Magdalene is running to the Apostles to tell them the tomb is empty and Jesus Christ has been raised! The Church is young! What is 2000 years in light of eternity? Jesus is Lord and we have work to do! Remember the kerygma and our mission received. Jesus died for us and this love story must be told until the end of time. We have been given everything we need – the message of our Lord is clear and is ultimately simple: “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always,

until the end of the age.”~ Bishop Donald Hying, “Go Make

Disciples” Pentecost Pastoral Letter

FIRST FRIDAY EUCHARISTIC ADORATION SEPTEMBER 4 & 5

We will have First Friday Adoration in the main body of the church at Saint Clement, beginning right after 8:15 am daily Mass on Friday through Saturday, 8 am, with Solemn Benediction. Please sign up on the schedule near the Fatima Chapel. You may come at any time during the 24-hour adoration, however signing up for just one hour will assure at least one person is in the church at all times keeping vigil with the Blessed Sacrament throughout the day and night. Thank you for the donation of your time!

During this First Friday time of prayer before the Blessed Sacrament, please include prayers for vocations to the priesthood and religious life. Pray too for our seminarians, those in religious formation, our current priests and those in the consecrated religious life. Jesus tells us that, “The harvest is rich, but the workers are few; therefore ask the Harvest-Master to send workers for His harvest” (Lk 10:2). Heeding His words, let us pray for vocations.

FALL FESTIVAL NEWSOur St. Clement Fall Festival is Sunday, October 4 and it’s our

only fund-raising activity for our entire parish. Fall Festival raffle & dinner tickets packets are on the tables in the church entrances. According to state law, we are NOT ALLOWED to send raffle tickets through mail, we are asking for your help in picking up packets belonging to your neighbors, friends and other family members, which is GREATLY appreciated!

WELCOME BACK TO SCHOOL!!!Thank you for all of your prayers as we safely and prudently

re-opened Saint Clement School last Wednesday, August 26th with 117 students in grades 4K-6. We currently have around 10 students each day learning virtually from home through live Zoom meeting with their classrooms. The rest of the students are learning face-to-face in school with enhanced safety precautions including social distancing, facial coverings, extra cleaning and disinfecting, hygiene education, etc. We are blessed to have an amazing group of teachers, staff, and school families working together to stay positive and do what is best for all of our children. We are also blessed to have our Catholic faith to help comfort us and guide us through good times and potentially challenging times in our lives. Thank you all once again for your continued prayers and support for our wonderful parish school!!!

SAINT CLEMENT SCHOOL

IN MEMORIAMPlease remember in your prayers this week Margaret Taylor of

our parish who died on Sunday, August 23, and whose funeral was held August 29. Margaret was 90 at the time of her passing from this life into life eternal. Margaret (Ihm) Taylor was born near Lancaster and never moved very far away. In 1948 she was united in love and marriage to Donald Taylor and together they raised five children. Margaret and Don also spent their lives in farming, and in her “spare” time, Margaret drove school bus for the Lancaster School District for over 30 years. This was something she took pride in, being only the second woman to drive bus for the district. Margaret enjoyed her time with family and friends, and she was very devoted to her faith and to our parish. Even as her health declined in recent years, her faith in God and her love for the Lord and her family did not. As we keep Margaret in our prayers, may we also pray for her dear children – Roger (Deanna), Richard (Sandy), Terry (Elaine), Betty (Eugene), her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, siblings, and all of her loved ones in this time of sorrow. May God’s consolation and comfort be with them.“Eternal rest grant unto Margaret, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon

her. May she rest in peace. May her soul, and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.”
