Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,
During my homilies, teachings and writings I will frequently mention, “The Heavenly Father wants to have a
personal relationship with us.” I know that it may seem hard to believe. God the Father, our creator wants to have a deep
personal relationship with me? But it is true!! That is why He came to earth as a human, in Christ, to show His great love
for us and His willingness to have a personal relationship. Even after Christ died for our sin, which restored our
relationship with the Father, He sent the Holy Spirit which guides and empowers us to live in relationship with the Father.
The basis of this relationship must be trust and faith, not emotion or feelings, it must be based on real love, our
response to the Father’s love for us. It’s amazing to me that our relationship with the Father is His heart’s desire. The fact is
He wants to be in relationship with us far more than we can imagine. He made us and He loves us unconditionally and
desires that we turn our lives totally back to Him. It’s our choice.
I see the relationship with God as being very similar to my relationship with my wife, Laurel. During our courtship
and early years of marriage it seems as though I had such deep “feelings” of love. But I quickly learned that basing my love
on feelings was going nowhere, because my feelings were inconsistent. I needed to make a stronger commitment to loving
her and the children not based on feelings. This became a daily decision to love Laurel and my children, especially when
life became challenging. Now our love is far deeper than we could ever imagine because of our personal call from God.
I have had this same experience in my relationship with God. When I first began to turn my life over to Christ it
was exciting and filled with all types of wonderful feelings which actually got things rolling. These feelings are not bad,
God uses our feelings for a greater good. I soon learned that my relationship with God had to be based on a decision to
follow Him. My relationship had to be based on understanding, a certainty, that He loves me.
I know that many of you already are pursuing a personal relationship with God. You pray daily, say the Rosary, go
to daily or weekly mass, study scripture, and participate in the sacramental life of the Church or do other daily devotions.
All of these steps or activities help us to have a personal relationship with God the Father. Just like getting to know my
wife requires that we spend time together, sharing our lives and listening to each other, so it is with God. We are all
tempted to avoid time with God for many reasons, such as, we can’t believe He wants to be close to us or maybe we have a
sense of unworthiness that separates us. Having a personal relationship with God is not about doing “good works.” Good
works flow from our relationship, which become our response to our relationship, because we have begun to experience
His great unconditional Love, which we see in Christ.
When we have a relationship with Christ, things around us begin to take on a deeper meaning. For example,
Eucharist becomes the real presence of Christ given to me as a gift. Wow what a gift!!
The Bible becomes a living Word, a Love letter to me, telling me about a Father who loves me! It is hard to see the
works of God without a personal relationship with Him. We want to live a life more worthy of His Love, so our activities
and values tend to align more with His ways.
And when we begin to experience this relationship we want more, so we pray more and seek to learn and
understand more about God’s plan for me!
Therefore, I will be encouraging us all, including myself, to give our lives over to Christ and His Church. He longs
to be our personal savior and have us all participate in His plan for His family. He is waiting!
In the love of Christ, Deacon Rick Brown
