Come, Visit the Lord

In The Blessed Sacrament

We have been talking a lot over the past year about becoming more intentional disciples of Jesus. Let’s take a closer look at this morning’s reading from the Gospel according to Luke to see what kind of light it sheds on the meaning of discipleship: While great crowds were following Jesus, He turned around and addressed them as follows: “Anyone who wants to be my follower must love me far more than he does his own father, mother, wife, children, brothers, or sisters—yes, even more than his own life—otherwise he cannot be my disciple. And no one can be my disciple who is unwilling to carry his own cross and follow me.”

Clearly a disciple is one whose relationship with Jesus is such that he/she can bear with difficult and challenging teachings such as this one. Jesus is not asking us to turn our backs on those we have loved the most, but he is telling us that we won’t be able to go where he is going unless we put Him ahead of all others and ourselves as well.

We already know what it looks and feels like to have relationships which consume our time, caring, and love. Parents regularly put the needs of their children ahead of their own. Spouses who aspire to be faithful to their wedding vows often put the beloved ahead of themselves. Siblings who grow up in a loving family experience a bond with each other that makes it possible for them to put the needs of a brother or sister ahead of their own. The ability and willingness to love like this flows from the relationships themselves. The truth is that we wouldn’t even want to consider being a disciple of Jesus without a relationship with him that is deeply personal. So, if Jesus is not yet the center of our lives, what can be done to bring that about?

The very first step involves prayer. We talk a lot to people we really love. The best motivation to pursue prayerful conversation is to accept as a fact of faith that Jesus loves us so much that he laid down his life for us. He wants to become our way, our truth, and our life. He has, in fact, already paid the price that enables us to be his disciples and his friends. If any of this sounds “foreign” to us, then perhaps it’s time to truly seek the Lord while he may be found. He’s promised to come again. Disciples look forward to this. Do you?

A deep conversion to Jesus Christ and His values. During this journey, which begins with the ALPHA course at St Andrew, a person is formed in faith by reflecting on God’s Word, the Catholic Community’s life, liturgy, beliefs, and apostolic works.

Although primarily designed for persons seeking Baptism; baptized Christians from other denominations may also be seeking membership. The process is also open to baptized Catholics who would like to complete their initiation as Church members, and celebrate the sacraments of Eucharist and Confirmation.

The journey of full initiation begins with the Period of Inquiry. ALPHA is particularly suited for this time of questions and finding out more about the Church and its life of faith. Not all inquirers decide to enter the Church or to complete their initiation — it is up to the individual.

After the 12 weeks of ALPHA, the Journey of Faith continues on Wednesday evenings through Lent and Easter.

CLASSES RESUME SEP 11

10:20am – 11:30am

Participation in Saturday/Sunday Mass is THE key ingredient in helping parents shape the Catholic faith of their children. It is not sufficient to just drop kids off for Sunday School. Parents are expected to participate in Mass with their children on the weekends. It would be great if parents could show their support and set the example by also participating in adult faith formation classes which often meet at the same time.

SAFE ENVIRONMENT TRAINING
