PASTOR’S CORNER

Today, our Parish School of Religion students begin a new year of classes. We are most grateful to our catechists and aides who share their time and gifts so that our young people can experience religious formation; coming to know the teachings and traditions of our faith. Next weekend at all the Masses there will be a special blessing for all in our community who serve in the ministry of catechesis whether it be in PSR, School, Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, RCIA and Adult Faith Formation.

Now that the Labor Day holiday has passed, many parish activities are resuming. The Choirs are returning to the 9:30 a.m. and Noon Masses. The Children’s Schola will be returning to 5:00 p.m. Masses on a monthly basis. The Bell Choir will resume their ministry in a few months as their leader is recuperating from knee replacement surgery. Walking With Purpose, That Man Is You!, and Alpha are resuming. I hope that many of you are able to participate in these opportunities.

Each year, the Knights of Columbus Council at Saint Timothy Church hosts the Blue Mass. The Mass this year will be at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 11, 2018. All are invited to participate.

As many of you know, Father Jim Colopy has been celebrating some of the Weekend Masses for the past several years. Since they are adding a Weekend Mass at Our Lady of Perpetual Help, he will no longer be able to do so. However, he will help with Weekday Masses as he is able. Father Stan Benecki, who was pastor at Saint Mary Magdalene Church and retired in July, has been helping on weekends and will continue to do so. We are most grateful to both for their ministry.

God’s blessings!Father Leo Connolly

VOCATION VIEWSTHE TWENTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIMEJesus groans to the heavens, begging God for our openness. Let His prayer of “Ephphata!” echo in the stillness of your heart. Pray for the gift of openness for yourself, and for those whom God may be calling to priesthood or religious life.

READINGS FOR SEPTEMBER 16 THE TWENTY-FOURTH SUNDAYIN ORDINARY TIME Reading I – Isaiah 50:5-9a Reading II – James 2:14-18 Gospel – Mark 8:27-35

LIFE FOCUS QUESTIONS

• In what ways can we “crucify” our own interests for the sake of others?

•How do our actions sometimes give conflicting answers to Jesus’ question in today’s Gospel: “Who do you say that I am?”

• In whom have you seen the face of the crucified Christ?

•What is the most difficult and challenging cross that you carry? Has it ever been a means of resurrection in your life?

•Has “knowing” Jesus ever posed a serious challenge to you?

JOB OPENINGAs some may be aware, the Parish Office is in the process of doing some staff restructuring. Katie Wohrle, our current Youth Minister, will be taking on a different role in the Parish Office, and therefore, we are looking to hire a part-time Youth Minister. The youth minister has the responsibility to successfully engage, direct, and grow the gift of faith and passion for Christ and the Catholic faith within our middle and high school students, grades six through twelve. The Director of Youth Ministry must demonstrate a strong understanding and ownership of the Catholic faith as well adolescent development so as to successfully form the discipleship of the youth. This person will be responsible for planning and implementing youth group events for both our Edge Middle School and Ignite High School groups. The Director of Youth Ministry will also be responsible for coordinating and attending annual service opportunities, retreats, and special event trips throughout the year. If you, or someone you know is interested in this position, please contact Katie Wohrle in the parish office at 614-878-5353 or [email protected].

All high school students are invited to our first youth group night of the new school year on Sunday, September 9th, from 7:00-8:30 p.m. in Rooms A & B. Food, games, prayer, and discussion about the upcoming year will all be a part of this opening night. Come check it out!

Middle School students (6th-8th grades)…mark your calendars for our next Edge night on Saturday, September 15th, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. We will meet in the gym following the 5:00 Mass. Also, plan on attending our annual glow-in-the-dark dodgeball night on Saturday, September 29th. Contact Katie Wohrle at [email protected] if you have any questions.

IS HELP NEEDED?If you or a family member can use any of the things mentioned below, please ask one of our Ministers of Hospitality for help before Mass.

•We have gluten-free hosts available. Please inform the Minister of Hospitality that one is needed. The host will be consecrated with the others. You will need to be in the Communion line for Father.

• For those with mobility issues, you may request that Communion be brought to your seat. The Minister of Hospitality will then let our Ministers of Communion know.

•We have auditory assistance devices which may be used during Mass. They amplify the sounds.

WEDNESDAY – 11:15 A.M.Join us in the Meditation Room to pray for

VICTIMS OF VIOLENCE

CATHOLIC APPETIZERSCatholic Appetizers will meet again on Tuesday, September 18th at Ann & Tony’s in West Jefferson for another casual get-together. Our discussion will center around the recent news revolving around the Pennsylvania Attorney General report and the newly published letter from Archbishop Vigano, both in regards to the ongoing scandal of sexual abuse. This very sensitive subject has touched so many lives in negative ways but it is important to remember the words of Jesus in Matthew 16:18, “And I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it.” Let us gather as members of our Church, in our part of the world, and strengthen our faith against that netherworld. If you are not familiar with Catholic Appetizers, here are some basics: we gather, chat about our faith, and eat!! The discussion begins around 6:00 p.m. in the private room at Ann & Tony’s and because the private room is limited in space an RSVP will be appreciated no later than Monday, September 17 to Susan Baker at 614-327-7558 or [email protected]. Come join us!!

CRAFT SHOWThe PTO-sponsored Fall Craft Show will be held on Saturday, October 20; 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. Come and get a little early shopping done for the holidays! Lunch, Raffle, and Bake Sale are available. Vendor information is available on the parish website, www.saintceciliachurch.org.

FESTIVAL WRAP-UP MEETINGPlease join us on Monday, September 10, in the School Hall (cafeteria) for our Festival Wrap-up Meeting. We will share the financial results of the 2018 Festival. Suggestions and ideas for 2019 are welcome!

CATECHETICAL SUNDAYSEPTEMBER 16, 2018

The United States Catholic Bishops have chosen “Enlisting Witnesses for Jesus Christ” as the key theme for Catechetical Sunday, which will be celebrated on September 16. In common with other parishes throughout the United States, we will celebrate and honor all those who are teachers, catechists, prison ministers, youth ministers, Children’s Liturgy of the Word presenters and RCIA ministers.

At all of the Masses on September 15/16, we will recognize these helpers who do so much to pass along the Faith in our parish. This is also an opportunity for everyone to rededicate themselves to the role given at Baptism to hand on the Faith and be a witness to the Gospel. We are reminded that sharing the gift of Faith is a calling from God whose Holy Spirit inspires and guides us.
