Welcome!

We had a lovely evening at our kick-off meeting. We welcomed Father Wayne Watts who spoke to

Melanie Rigney, the author of Sisterhood of Saints: Daily Guidance and Inspiration (Franciscan Media) will be speaking at our General Meeting on Tuesday, October 28 in the Hospitality Room (please note later date). Her book is a page-a-day devotional that explores 366 female saints’ and blesseds’ charisms and relevance to our lives today including a bit of relevant Scripture or something from the wom-an’s writings and a challenge item based on the charism.

From her website: “I’m also a regular contributor to the Catholic devotional Living Faith and Your Daily Tripod, a terrifi c Catholic

blog. My devotions also have appeared in Penned from the Heart and Daily Devotions for Writers. I love

the challenge of including Scripture, prayer, and lesson in a message that typically is under 300 words. Devotions writing is something I began in

2006, a year after I returned to the Catholic Church following an absence of more than thirty years. My dear friend Anna LaNave facilitat-ed a returning Catholics class I took at my parish, and we were delighted to be asked to co-author When They Come Home: Ways to Welcome Returning Catholics, a book

for parish staff and lay leaders.”Her book will be for sale at our meeting for

$15. A portion of each sale will come back to the Women’s Club!

Please join us on Tuesday, October 28. There is no cost for this event, however we ask that you please bring a $5 gift card to donate to Heather’s House and an appe-

tizer or dessert to share with fellow members.

2 Saint Anne Women’s Club Newsletter October 2014

On September 9th, the Women’s Club held its fi rst general meeting of the new year. After the club’s spiritual moderator, Sr. Lauretta, led the group in an opening prayer, President Margaret Lortie began the meeting by introducing the club’s theme for year of compassion. She reviewed the calendar for the year and reviewed the many opportunities for members to volunteer their time and talent with the Club and its ministries.

The evening featured a presentation by Fr. Wayne Watts of St. John Berchmans Parish. He has also been a priest of the Archdiocese of Chicago since 1990 and the Associate Administrator of Chicago Catholic Charities since 2002. Fr. Watts spoke to us about compassion—describing his experience and how we can be compassionate in our daily lives.

He went on to describe his upbringing as the sixth of nine children in a Catholic family living on the west side of Chicago. He learned compas-sion at an early age. Each summer, his father, an OBGYN physician, and his mother would take into their home a woman who was having a problem-atic pregnancy. She would become a part of their family. Fr. Watts asked the group about who in our lives has demonstrated compassion.

He gave us the defi nition of compassion, which is a feeling of deep sympathy and sorrow for another who is stricken by misfortune, accom-panied by a strong desire to alleviate the suffering. It is not just feeling sorry for another person’s suffering, but also trying to do something to help. As St. Paul told the Corinthians, “If I…do not have love, I am a resounding gong or a clashing symbol…. If I give away everything…so that I may boast but do not have love, I gain nothing. Love is patient, love is kind….” 1 Cor 13:1,3-4.

At Catholic Charities, Fr. Watts deals with people with signifi cant life issues on a daily basis—people who are not always easy to love. He suggested that we ask the Holy Spirit for help and guidance. We can also read scripture for examples of true compassion—the story of the Good Samaritan in Luke’s Gospel, to name one. The evening would not be

complete without discussing Pope Francis, who has made compas-sion one of the primary objectives of his pontifi cate. His Holiness advocates actively helping those in need—pursu-

ing corporal works of mercy as much as spiritual works of mercy.

After the presentation, Fr. Watts blessed the kimonos made by the Saint Anne Sewing Ministry for the benefi t of the women at the St. Martin de Porres Women’s Shelter.

During the evening, there was a 50/50 raffl e wherein Marge Durkin won $59.00 and the same amount will be donated to FISH (For I Shall Help). Two raffl e prizes from Mixed Designs were also awarded.

“A big thank you goes to Cindy Byrne who has been Chairperson of the Funeral Luncheon Ministry for more than 10 years. Cindy and her teams have helped those who have experienced the loss of a loved one by preparing and serving lunch for the family and friends after the funeral. Cindy won’t be going far as she has agreed to assist our new Chairman, Susan Valentino. Susan and her family have been members of Saint Anne since 1995 and after working with Cindy for the last two years has agreed to take over the leadership roll. When you see Susan or Cindy at the next meeting, please take the time to thank them for keeping this much needed Ministry running so smoothly at Saint Anne.”

FISH (For I Shall Help) has served Barrington area residents since 1967. It is a network of volunteers who answer the emergency transportation needs of the community when family, friends, or public transportation are not available for MEDICALLY-related appoint-ments. The majority of our clients are the elderly who are grateful to have a ride, and especially appreciative of the very personal door-to-door service that they receive.

There are 3 types of volunteers designed to suit everyone’s abilities and interests.1. The driver volunteer makes him/herself available to drive on a pre-assigned day once a month. We are currently in a great need for drivers.2. The telephone volunteer works once a month on a pre-assigned day. He/she answers calls from our professional answering service and relays requests to the appropriate volunteer. A phone volunteer does not have to be home the entire day—one just needs access to a phone or cell phone.3. The substitute driver volunteer offers the most fl exibility. This volunteer is put on a substitute driver list and is called when needed. A sub driver volunteer receives requests for appointments and can accept or decline them. There is no obligation as a sub driver—only if it works into your schedule!

Barrington FISH fi lls an important need in the community and makes a difference for the people of Barrington. Please help by volunteering for FISH by calling Kathy at 847-381-6840.
