The Soleminty of Mary the Holy Mother of GodJanuary 1, 2017

What does the Solemnity of Mary mean? The Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God is a liturgical celebration observed on January 1st. It is a Holy day of obligation for Catholics, meaning that Mass attendance is required (though the Mass obligation is sometimes waived by the bishop for various reasons; when in doubt, check with your parish.)

The use of the word “Solemnity” here is not a statement about Mary’s personality. It is a designation used for certain days within the liturgical (church-based) calendar of the Church. Solemnities are the highest rank of liturgical celebration, higher than feast days or memorials. By celebrating a solemnity dedicated to Mary’s motherhood, the Church highlights the significance of her part in the life of Jesus, and emphasizes that he is both human and divine.

Though New Year’s Day may seem more like a day for football and hangovers than for Mary, there’s a beautiful spiritual significance in celebrating her during the heart of the Christmas season. Pope Paul VI, in his apostolic exhortation Marialis Cultus (1974), called the Solemnity of Mary “a fitting occasion for renewing adoration of the newborn Prince of Peace, for listening once more to the glad tidings of the angels (cf.Lk 2:14), and for imploring from God, through the Queen of Peace, the supreme gift of peace.”

Gifts Received - A story of how Marcia Vinzons has received... Saint Andrew has been my parish since I came to the United States. My call to ministry started when I got interested in Scripture Study. On day, I received a letter inviting me to become one of the facilitators. My first reaction was of doubt and fear, with the question, “Why me? What do I know about scriptures and facilitating?” With God’s grace through prayers, I said “Yes” and this was the beginning of my

involvement in different minsitries at Saint Andrew. I realized that Saint Andrew offers so many spiritual programs like Advent and Lenten reflections and also a lot of volunteer opporutnities of which I take advantage. I learned that ministry is for everybody. No special qualification is needed. All we have to do is say, “Yes.” I feel blessed for all the gifts I receive. It gives me great joy.

Gifts Given - A story of why Vida Vinzons choses to give... The gift of time: When I received the letter from Fr. Sergio, inviting me to be part of the Capital Campaign, my first reaction was to say, “No” since I don’t have the talent to solicit nor the treasure to give, but one thing I had was time. So I attended the meeting and we were given pointers on how to go about it. I was still reluctant, because when I saw the amount being asked of people on the list of potential donors and the goal of $2.25 million, it was very daunting. Then with slight hesitation, I

ventured to look at the list and saw some people that I know. “Yes,” I said to myself, “I can do this.” I assisted little by little calling other people and eventually, as a parish, we reached our goal. Since we were small, my parents taught us to believe in the power of prayer and to help in any way we can with the Church, for it is in giving that we receive. I was glad I was able to do that.

When we worship...During the Preparation of the Gifts, the priest intivtes the congregation to pray and with one voice they acclaim “May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands, for the praise and glory of His name, for our good and the good of all His church.”

For anyone who questions (and don’t we all) “Why come together for Mass?” or “What’s the point? I don’t get anything out of it?” the answer is found directly in the words we speak at Mass. The first reason we gather is to give praise to God. The second reason is spoken immediately after the first, for our good and the good of the Church. In such a brief moment of the Mass, we articulate with crystalline clarity an answer to the question,“What’s it all about?”

This prayer is spoken at the height of the exchange of gifts at Mass. On behalf of us all, the priest offers the gifts we have given to God. Bread and wine. But these gifts represent so much more than a snack offered to appease a deity. They are symbols of our entire selves, our work, our talents, our energy, our hopes, our dreams. When the priest offers up these gifts to God and we ask God to accept them for the glory of his name, a sacred bond is enriched between God and us like a child bringing home a picture she has drawn. No matter the quality of the art, the gift is sacred to the parent. So too with us.

A New Year’s resolution is a tradition, most common in the Western Hemisphere but also found in the Eastern Hemisphere, in which a person makes a promise to do an act of self-improvement or something slightly nice, such as opening doors for people beginning from New Year’s Day.Religious originsBabylonians made promises to their gods at the start of each year that they would return borrowed objects and pay their debts. The Romans began each year by making promises to the god Janus, for whom the month of January is named. In the Medieval era, the knights took the “peacock vow” at the end of the Christmas season each year to re-affirm their commitment to chivalry. At watchnight services, many Christians prepare for the year ahead by praying and making these resolutions. This tradition has many other religious parallels. During Judaism’s New Year, Rosh Hashanah, through the High Holidays and culminating in Yom Kippur (the Day of Atonement), one is to reflect upon one’s wrongdoings over the year and both seek and offer forgiveness. People can act similarly during the Christian liturgical season of Lent, although the motive behind this holiday is more of sacrifice than of responsibility. In fact, the practice of New Year’s resolutions came, in part, from the Lenten sacrifices. The concept, regardless of creed, is to reflect upon self-improvement annually.
