I training, edit, write and consult for international organizations. I have 25 years’ newspaper experience, including 11 years at the International Herald Tribune in Paris, where I was deputy editorial page editor. In 2009 I founded my own consultancy. I have New Zealand and French nationalities, and speak English and French.

SKILLS

As an editor and consultant, I help organizations to analyse and clarify their aims, audiences, messages and narratives. I specialize in “heavy lifting” - transforming dense or undeveloped texts through close attention to language and structure.

My writing workshops are based on my deep experience of writing and editing. I help participants identify target audiences, communication goals and reading contexts. I show how to plan and structure documents convincingly; to build punchy paragraphs and sentences; to choose the best words and avoid jargon; and revise drafts from top to bottom so they’re ready to go.

AREAS OF EXPERTISE

I’m a language person. My deepest expertise is in writing, editing and analysing text. Since I began editing and training for international organizations, I have also built up expertise in education, energy, African development, climate and health.Education: I edited the UN’s major annual education report for four years.

Energy: I have been a consultant editor for the International Energy Agency since 2009.

Africa: I edited four Africa Progress Reports and many other texts for the Africa Progress Panel.

Climate: I wrote the African Development Bank’s position paper for the COP21 global climate talks. In 2017 I edited a ground-breaking OECD report on climate and growth.

Health: I edit and train for The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, and for Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance.

Reports that I have edited have influenced policy in measurable ways

The 2011 Education for All Global Monitoring Report, The Hidden Crisis: Armed Conflict and Education, “spearheaded a movement to protect schools as safe places and the human right of education [. . .] The UN Security Council followed up in July of that year with a resolution to enhance education in conflict zones.”

The recommendations of the 2013 Africa Progress Report, Equity in Extractives, were adopted in the G8 Action Plan Principles to prevent the misuse of companies and legal arrangements, which laid the groundwork for the G8 summit declaration in Lough Erne, Northern Ireland, in June 2013.
