Keeping Our World “Crystal Clean”

Crystal recognizes that our wonderful world is precious and fragile. We are commit-ted to all possible avenues of pollution prevention, complying with worldwide environ-mental regulations, and are continually enhancing our environmental management system to minimize and reduce the environmental impact of our operations. We are also dedicated to raising shipboard and shoreside awareness of responsible and respect-ful treatment of the environments through which we travel.

Evening Dress Code: Crystal CasualWomen’s Crystal Casual includes:A blouse, sweater, dressy slacks, skirt, dressMen’s Crystal Casual can include:A sport coat, dress shirt, button-down shirt, open collar or collared polo shirt and dress pants or smart trousers (no tie required)

For the nearly three decades that Crystal has been sailing the oceans and rivers of the world, significant strides have been made in global technologies and practices that help keep the world’s waters as free as possible from harmful substances. Crystal strictly adheres to – and often ex-ceeds – all relevant measures and requirements set forth to keep our world healthy.

We first introduced our Crystal Clean Environmental Management System (EMS) program in 1991, pioneering environmental efforts in the cruising industry, and have since maintained and enhanced our practices, conducting annual internal audits to ensure all prac-tices are observed. To protect our ocean and fragile environment, we follow a strict policy and procedures that dictate that all waste is carefully collected on board, stored and properly disposed of

through appropriate channels, rather than being discarded overboard.

Crystal Clean Begins with the Crew

Every crew member is trained in our Crystal Clean environmental policies and practices and signs a state-ment indicating they have received this training and commit to upholding Crys-tal’s environmental policies.

Monthly environmental meetings are also held to ensure that the latest poli-cies and procedures are continuously reviewed and improved where possible.

A dedicated Environmental Officer aboard our ocean ships supports our crew and company efforts, overseeing training and implementation of Crys-tal’s own policies, as well as compliance to those of various destinations. This officer ensures all facets of Crystal’s

...continued from front cover

environmental stewardship are in proper working order, from inspections of chemical storage to the efficiency of waste management and water systems.

What Happens to Waste? There are two basic ways to manage

waste streams: to improve the process-ing of waste, and to reduce the amount of waste from the very beginning. In our efforts to address the latter of these two, Crystal has made significant strides aboard our ships, phasing out the use of plastic straws and beverage stirrers; replacing Styrofoam cups with paper; disposable plastic lint removers with solid wood lint brushes; plastic ice buckets with stainless steel; and plastic laundry and shoe bags with reusable cloth versions. We have also incorpo-rated reusable paper hangers and cloth bags for delivering guests’ clothes from the laundry. Crystal Cruises cloth tote bags are available in all guest rooms as a gift for guests to continue conservation practices beyond our ships.

Of course, it is inevitable that some waste is generated on board. Crystal ships are equipped with modern waste management equipment to process trash and sewage. And, believe it or not, the process starts with you, our guest, when you sort and place items in the appropriate recycling and trash bins on the outside decks. This initial sorting is tremendously helpful in reducing waste. Sorting is also done by the stateroom attendants and other cleaning staff prior to the final sorting done in the garbage room. After all sorting has been fin-ished, the trash goes into an onboard incinerator or is landed ashore to be managed by reputable waste manage-ment companies.

Wastewater is collected, treated in accordance with international, federal and state regulations, and its disposal is strictly managed by Crystal. Interna-

tional standards mandate that graywa-ter — water from laundry rooms and showers for instance — can be dis-charged into the sea virtually anywhere, including in ports. However, the more restrictive U.S. federal and state require-ments effectively limit discharge to more than three nautical miles from land for the U.S. coasts. Crystal exceeds these requirements by voluntarily discharging treated graywater a minimum of 12 nau-tical miles from shore. Treated black-water (or sewage) is also discharged at least 12 nautical miles from shore — a practice that exceeds international regulations which provide for discharge a minimum of only three nautical miles from shore.

Pivotal Partners: Crystal Guests & Worldwide Suppliers

Staterooms are one of the places where guests can help conserve re-sources. We invite guests to consider using their towels for more than one day instead of having towels laundered each day of the cruise. To indicate you would like to use your towel the next day, sim-ply hang up the towel. With the support of our guests, we are able to conserve significant amounts of water on each voyage, each year.

It is important to Crystal that our environmental efforts extend beyond our Crystal Family to our worldwide partners. We intentionally partner with suppliers across our operations that follow sound environmental practices of their own, and are willing and able to as-sist Crystal in achieving our standards.

Recycling EffortsRecycling is another imperative ele-

ment of our Crystal Clean practices. This policy permeates nearly every facet of ship operations. Many of our publica-tions, Reflections, Passport magazine, and brochures, are printed using recycled or

partially recycled materials. While the ships print menus that are used for only one meal, those menus are then returned to the ship’s print shop and printed again on the reverse side and used for crew notices and forms. They are also cut into handy sizes and recycled as notepads used all over the ship.

Reducing Energy ConsumptionThe elegant lighting effects on board

do not only create ambiance for guests, they are designed to be as efficient as possible. Working with an expert consultant, Crystal thoroughly analyzed energy consumption on board and in-stalled new light bulbs and fixtures that maximize their efficiency.

Crystal Cruises recognizes and sup-ports the mission of the United Nations to preserve the world’s natural resource for future generations. We kindly request that our guests join us in our commitment to our Crystal Clean policy by doing your part to reduce waste and energy consumption. Please, never throw anything overboard, and take an extra moment to ensure that trash and recyclables are properly disposed of. With your help, we can keep our won-derful world Crystal Clean.

Morning Devotions: A ½ hour service includes singing a few of the greatest hymns of Christianity and hearing the inspirational stories behind their creation. Today’s theme: “The Spiri-tual Depth of Christmas Hymns”, led by Pastor Ed Voosen. All are welcome!

CRYSTAL VISIONS ENRICHMENT PROGRAM

Special Interest Lecturer Capt. John CreightonCapt. John Creighton graduated from the United States Naval

Academy with a degree in aero-space engineering and received a master of science degree from George Washington University. After graduating from the US Naval Test Pilot School, he became one of the first to fly the F-14 Tomcat of “Top Gun” fame. John flew 175 combat missions from aircraft

carriers during the Vietnam War and is thankful he has an equal number of takeoffs and landings.

Selected for the NASA Astronaut Program in 1978, Capt. Creighton flew three space shuttle missions as pilot and commander. He holds the world altitude record for flight of a winged vehicle.

After retiring from NASA, John joined the Boeing Company as a test pilot and eventually became their chief technical pilot where he was responsible for the development of standardization of flight crew training across the Boeing fleet worldwide.

Capt. John Creighton presents his talk today at 11:00am in the Galaxy Lounge.

Special Interest Lecturer Neil LeiferNeil Leifer’s photography career has spanned 60 years, since

becoming a professional while still

in his teens. Beginning in 1960, his

pictures regularly appeared in every

major national magazine, including

Time, Life, Newsweek, the Saturday

Evening Post, Look, and, most often,

Sports Illustrated.

Leifer became a staff photographer

for Sports Illustrated in 1972; then for Time in 1978. In 1988

he was made a contributing photographer at Life magazine and

spent the next two years dividing his time shooting for both Time

and Life. When he left Time Inc. in 1990, his photographs had

appeared on over 200 Sports Illustrated, Time, and People covers

– at that point, the most ever published of one photographer’s

work in company history. He is the 2006 recipient of the pres-

tigious Lucie Award for Achievement in Sports Photography. In

2008 he was honored for his outstanding contribution to Time

Inc. journalism with The Britton Hadden Lifetime Achievement

Award. In 2014, he became the very first photographer to be

inducted into the Boxing Hall of Fame.

Leifer has published 17 books, 9 of which have been collections

of his sports photographs. Ballet in the Dirt and Guts and Glory,

both published by Taschen, showcase the best of his professional

baseball and football photographs. His memoir, Relentless, was

published by the University of Texas Press in 2016. Taschen will

publish his next book, a collection of 60 years of boxing photog-

raphy, in 2020.

Leifer has traveled all over the world on sports assignments. He

has photographed 16 Olympic Games (7 winter and 9 summer),

4 FIFA World Cups, 15 Kentucky Derbies, countless World Series

games, the first 12 Super Bowls, and almost every important

boxing title fight since Ingemar Johansson beat Floyd Patterson

in 1959. He photographed his favorite subject, Muhammad Ali,

on almost 60 different occasions, covering all of his biggest fights

and over 30 one-on-one studio sessions.

Neil is now a full-time filmmaker whose documentaries have

appeared on both HBO and ESPN. His 2017 documentary,

Neary’s: the Dream at the End of the Rainbow, was shown on

PBS. His most recent film, Playing With Matches, was completed

in September 2018.

Neil Leifer lectures today at 1:30pm in the Hollywood Theatre.

Museum San Francisco, and is the author of widely acclaimed

books on Indonesian history and art, some of which have been

translated into six languages. Professor Vickers has appeared on

programs aired on the History and National Geographic Channels

and is often called upon by the Australian media to comment on

events in Asia that affect Australia.

Professor Adrian Vickers lectures today at 10:00am in the Galaxy Lounge.

Joe special-izes in writing about health and wellness. Since 2007, Joe has been splitting his time between his home office in the Lehigh Valley of Pennsylvania and teaching on Crystal. In addition to his

memoir-writing class, which has enabled dozens of guests to publish their life stories,

Joe also assists his wife, Maria, with her yoga program.

Memoir Writing

If your family has been bugging you for years to “write this stuff down!,” here’s your chance to finally get started. Instructor Joe Kita has published five memoirs, written for numerous national magazines, taught journalism at Lehigh University, and appeared on “Oprah.” He has taught this class on 10 previous Crystal World Cruises, and more than a hundred of his students have gone on to actually publish books. You’ll learn everything from how to get started to how to self-publish. Don’t miss this opportunity to leave a

special legacy.

World Cruise Book Club

If you enjoy discussing good books or just want to learn more about the unique places on our itinerary, join the club! Organized by memoir-writing instructor Joe Kita, it meets periodically throughout the World Cruise. Our seven titles are a mix of old and new, fiction and nonfiction, and are keyed to areas we’ll be visiting. Please bring your own print or digital version; library has limited copies. All guests are welcome. Here’s what we’ll be discussing this present cruise:

Voyage 2: “Island of Shattered Dreams” by Chantal Spitz

Yoga Instructor – Maria KitaLooking for a fun new way to get in shape and feel better instantly? Yoga is great for soothing aches, easing stress, building strength, and saying hello to your toes after all

these years! Maria knows. Sixteen years ago, she had major back surgery. Now she’s doing full back bends and standing on her head. She’s even grown a half-inch. The secret to her comeback wasn’t just a good surgeon, but daily yoga. It has helped her heal and grow stronger, physically and mentally. Now, as a registered yoga instructor and practicing registered nurse, she’s ready to help you experience these same benefits.

When she’s not on the ship (this is her ninth World Cruise appearance with Crystal), Maria lives in the Lehigh Valley of Pennsylvania with her husband Joe. When traveling, Maria keeps learning by attending yoga classes in such parts of the world as Alaska, South Africa, Tahiti, New Zealand, India and Vietnam.

Join her on sea-day mornings in the Palm Court (the most beautiful yoga studio in the

world!), or ask her about private or semi-private lessons.

Grammy-Nominated Saxophonist, Tommy ProulxTommy Proulx is an example of one of the biggest artist development breakthrough stories in recent years. From high school band-geek to internationally acclaimed instrumental pop star, Tommy is the modern model of a self-produced, independent recording artist, a concept that many in the music industry refer to as “the new making it.” As a popular Instagramer and recording artist,

Tommy’s success story started with a single Kickstarter campaign that launched an international touring career, taking his shows to over 40 countries on 6 continents worldwide.

With a Masters degree in saxophone performance, Tommy utilizes his classical and jazz training to break through the music industry bringing the saxophone to a new generation of listeners. His high-energy live shows catapult the audience into a world where the complexity of modern jazz meets the infectious energy of pop, hip-hop and R&B. With the release of his debut album, “SaxTrax,” his youthful, yet sophisticated sensibility redefines the saxophone as a tasteful addition to today’s urban pop sounds.

Tommy’s recording credits span across many genres and has recently landed him his first contribution nominated for a GRAMMY award, Marvin Sapp’s “Here I Am.”

An inspirational speaker, vlogger, and music educator in his spare time, Tommy uses his story to inspire young musicians to take pride in the very thing that makes them unique - then wait for the world to catch up.

Tommy Proulx performs this evening at 7:45pm and 9:45pm in the Galaxy Lounge.

Gergo loves dancing which has led him to becoming the national champion of

ballroom dancing in his home country of Hungary. Gergo is looking forward to sharing

MEET THE FITNESS DIRECTORS

Fitness Director Julian FuchsJulian is from Munich, Germany. His passion is to motivate

people and to push them to their limits. For Julian, it is the best

feeling if his clients leave the gym with a smile.

Julian has been in the health, fitness

and nutrition industry for the past seven

years. He started his apprenticeship in

2010 and received different licences,

including nutrition, detoxification,

posture analysis, strength and

conditioning, as well as a diploma as

a sport and health trainer. After three

years apprenticeship, he worked four

years for the same company as a personal trainer. Julian wanted

more, he wanted to see more of the world, see other countries,

experience other cultures and to train these people, with the

same results as in Germany; to see them smile after helping

them. He also wanted to speak English fluently and possibly other

languages. Julian wanted to grow from the experience. His motto

is “If you have fun with something, then you take it serious.“

He has been involved in sports his entire life and has tried

everything, but his passions are tennis and skiing. Julian played

tennis for 17 years, but after starting the apprenticeship, he

stopped. He has been skiing for 20 years and has competed

as an athlete in the sport for two years. He discovered a new

passion; dancing. He learned Shuffle and Hip Hop in a dancing

school for a short time, because of his work in the gym. He

learned dancing for himself and used a lot of time to become

better. In the gym he trains 3-5 times per week for more than

an hour to keep his body fit and healthy.

In his free time, he enjoys time with his friends, dancing in

clubs, watching movies and listening to music. His family lives

in Salzburg, Austria, and he has a little brother with an age

difference of 20 years.

Fitness Director Dragan MilovancevicDragan is from Belgrade, Serbia. He is very passionate about

making people feel their best about themselves. His philosophy

focuses on continual lifelong learning towards enhancing the

wellbeing of his clients by empowering

them with the knowledge, skills, support,

and guidance and assist them on their

journey to a healthier life style.

He has knowledge in the medical field

that he acquired back home in his studies.

He has extensive background in teaching

various martial arts such as judo, aikido,

capoeira and kickboxing. Along with

being a fitness instructor, he is also a certified massage thera-

pist, which complements his knowledge of the human body.

Dragan has been in the health, fitness, nutrition, exercise, pain

management industry for the past five years as a personal

trainer. He did his training at the Prestigious Faculty of Physical

Education in Belgrade capitol of Serbia.

niques in exercise science and both aerobic and strength training

programs, with a unique ability to offer suitable health and

fitness products and solutions to achieve customer expectations.

reach their goals. He works with clients to evaluate fitness

levels, set goals, monitor progress and blast through plateaus.

As a group instructor, he leads fun energetic classes for diverse

age groups and fitness levels.

in personal fitness training.
