• Sailing is a great activity to pursue.
• But, while sailing is a great sport and a superb mode of recreation, first timers can find it a little difficult.
• Here are a few tips that can help you sail through your first few experiences on water…literally!
Consider the Weather
• Learn sailing only when the weather is good and the water is calm with no tidal lashings.
• Make sure the spot you choose to learn sailing is not dotted with other boats.
Start Small
• Start by practicing on a small boat with a single sail.
• Smaller boats that have only one sail are easier to handle than larger ones, especially with multiple sails.
Be Cautious
• Other boats on water won’t be aware of your ‘Learner’ status.
• You have to be cautious and alert. Steer clear of other boats and swimmers.
Capsize!
• Weird as it may sound, experts advice that you capsize a couple of times when you are learning to sail.
• There are chances that you’ll capsize during your boating adventures and it is better that you learn to react correctly to this even as you are learning to sail.
• It always easier to control a capsized boat and bring it back to normal when the weather and waters are calm.
Follow Basic Safety Requirements
• Follow the basic safety requirements like carrying a life jacket, an emergency whistle or horn with you.
• Finally, practice and practice till you are perfect.
• But, remember sailing is as unpredictable as the winds at the waterfront, so gain experience, trust your instincts and enjoy your day out sailing.
