Landstar CSA Performance Based on a 24 month record ending 1/29/2016
Safe Parking Parking is a task that drivers must perform every day, and unfortunately it can come with many risks.
Dings and dents may not seem all that scary or stressful in the context of highway collisions and inci-
dents. But, the fact is, collisions in parking lots are among the most common accidents drivers ex-
perience, costing time and money. Collisions at truck stops, rest areas and shipper/consignee lots
accounted for 37% of all Landstar accidents in 2015.
Below are just a few things to consider:
Parking lot accidents are common, they can be avoided if drivers are easy on the accelerator
pedal and drive slowly.
A good practice is pulling through to the opposite space so you can drive forward out of the
space instead of backing out when leaving. This saves time and reduces hazards when
backing up; however be aware of vehicles pulling into the same spot headfirst.
If backing into a parking spot Get Out And Look before you begin backing (GOAL).
When it’s windy, use care so the door doesn’t hit the vehicle next to yours when exiting your
vehicle.
Keep your guard up until you are in your desired position and your brakes are set.
Trip planning is key! Parking shortage continues to be a challenge for CMV’s and there’s an
app for that! Apps like Trucker Tools and Trucker Path can assist with locating the best places to
park, stop, eat and more.
Watch out for pedestrians! When looking for a place to park, park further away where there is
less pedestrian traffic.
When choosing a parking space consider security! Choose a well lit area, preferably against a
fence to avoid cargo theft. Know cargo theft “hot spots” and avoid stopping in these areas if
possible.
Remember- Parking on any road open to public travel is a violation of
Landstar’s Sitting Duck Policy.

CSA BASIC scores may not be visible to the public, but they are still
as important as ever. Each and every BCO has the Power of One to
improve our scores. Clean inspections are key to keeping each
BASIC category under threshold. Always keep logs current, perform
thorough inspections and travel at a safe and legal speed.
Important information for operators using an Electronic Logging Device. A recent update from
Omnitracs could cost time, money and violations. The upgrade states that the beginning of drive
time must revert back to when the wheels started moving, so if an Electronic Logging Device
equipped truck moves prior to the end of a rest period, the on-duty time will begin when the truck
began to move. To avoid any issues, make sure a complete rest break is taken off-duty or in the
sleeper berth. Per 395.2, the definition of driving time means all time spent at the driving controls of
a commercial motor vehicle in operation and should be logged as on-duty driving.

Cargo Seal Integrity
Before 9/11, cargo seals and padlocks were often viewed as an
optional tool to many in the transportation industry. Post 9/11, the
world’s transportation supply chain has tightened up significantly
both domestically and internationally. Most shippers and trucking
companies have implemented supply chain security procedures. All
vans and containers must be sealed.
Border Crossing – Equipment inspections & High Security Seals
Security has to be taken seriously, and if you choose to haul freight across International borders you
must be committed to being vigilant. Visually inspect cargo at the point of loading. Equipment
inspections must be thorough and systematic prior to reaching the U.S. and Canadian borders.
While you are inspecting your equipment, look for natural or hidden compartments where
someone, unbeknownst to you may have hidden contraband. The sealing of the trailer or container
doors with a high security seal is a crucial requirement for a secure supply chain, and remains an
important and critical part of Landstar’s commitment to the C-TPAT & PIP programs (Customs-Trade
Partnership Against Terrorism & Partners in Protection).
Landstar’s cargo security procedures can be found at www.landstaronline.com by clicking on the
Safety & Security link and then the cargo security link.
If you have any questions about crossing the U.S./Canadian border, contact Landstar’s Customs
Help Desk at 888-628-8404. For Landstar’s C-TPAT or PIP requirements, or if you need high security
seals, contact the Security & Cargo Loss Prevention Department immediately at 800-872-9103.
