Fincantieri Experience
• Since the mid -80s, the Italian Navy wanted to acquire naval vessels able to carry out either military and civil functions.
• Fincantieri designed and built the ship class San Giorgio and San Giusto to fulfil with MMI requirement

New tools for Ship Safety
• Two possible aspects related to safety,
prevention and management of critical events
can be pointed out
– related to the ship herself
– interaction with the port.

New tools for Ship Safety - related to the ship herself
“Safe Return to Port” provides solutions and tools to avoid the problem of the ship "stuck" in the middle of the sea.

VULNERABILITY
ANALYSIS
CPEXPO 2013 – October 29th Genoa
Vulnerability as Safe Return to Port background
• CETENA (the Italian Ship Research Centre) has a long experience in
ship survivability assessment in the challenging field of combat
survivability of naval vessels.
• Since the ‘90s, CETENA is involved in vulnerability studies for the
Navy aiming at assessing the degree of inability of the ship to
withstand damages and maintain its operational effectiveness.
• A tool was developed to assess the degree of vulnerability of a
given ship.
• The survivability criterion used for these studies is:
– the ship has not just to remain afloat after a damage but it shall have a
defined level of operability in order to be able to perform the assigned
‘mission’ with a defined level of capability.

New tools for Ship Safety - interaction with the port
• Interactive ship simulators
– Identification of the conditions and safety parameters necessary for manoeuvring the ship in port.
– Verification of the feasibility of operations within ports
– Identification of the critical weather and sea conditions, the number of tugs required and the procedures and/or routes more effective.

Conclusions
• Fincantieri and CETENA has a proven experience in design and building ship units dedicated to civil protection with excellent flexibility.
• Safety is even more a leitmotiv in ship design for Military and Cruise Ships
• Simulation can provide a substantial help in developing safety in Ship Shore interaction
