    Afer he is loaded, om has already been working orour o six hours wihou pay. Disurbingly, his work dayis only jus saring and he will be siting in he cab onour highways and in our ciies and suburbs or he nex12 hours, or unil he load is done.

    Te pressures placed on drivers like om have beendirecly acknowledged by he Governmen. In Augus

    2011 ranspor Miniser Anhony Albanese said Iis a ac ha many ruck drivers have been subjec ounreasonable and unsae direcions or hreas concerningheir work because o he demands o powerul cliens.

    And he mos ragic consequence o such pressure isha an average o 330 people are killed each year in heroad ranspor indusry wih he laes Deparmen oranspor and Inrasrucure gures [2010] showingha 72% o hose killed in crashes are he occupansoher vehicles. Ta is up 14% on 2009.

    Paid waiting time increases operational and environmental ef ciencies

    Back in 2009, he ranspor Workers Union conduced a survey o drivers o assess he workingcondiions o drivers across he indusry. Ta survey ound 64 per cen o drivers had beenpressured ino unsae working pracices, 85% could no recover coss and 56 per cen wereorced, by economic pressure, o lower mainenance sandards.

    wo years laer and he Sae aes 2011 Survey was conduced over a hree-week period endingon November 11, and ook commen rom 715 ranspor workers rom across he counry.Drivers were inerviewed a ruck sops, depos, break rooms, and online.

    Te survey resuls showed ha:

    Unpaid work - 48% o drivers repor almos a day a weekin unpaid waiing ime. Fordelivery drivers i is more han 10 hours a week. Tis represens 300 - 500

    hours a year working wihou pay.

    Unsae vehicles - As in our 2009 survey an alarming 56% o owner drivers have had o oregovehicle mainenance because o economic pressure, he need o keepworking or he high cos o repairs.

    Unnecessary risk - 27% el hey had o drive oo as, and nearly 40% eel pressured o drivelonger han legally allowed; many say he pressure comes direcly orindirecly rom he clien.

    are ragic. We all know he grie and social dislocaion ha occurs across amilies and

    communiies when loved ones are so suddenly killed or maimed. According o heNaional ranspor Commission, approximaely 330 people are killed naionally each

    year in ruck crashes represening $2 billion a year o he $15 billion cos o all road

    crashes.

    And hese efecs are no conned o any one secor o he indusry. A recen shor haul

    sudy ound close o one-hird o drivers (29 per cen) repored having a chronic injury

    om ruck driving. Nearly one-hird o drivers (29.5 per cen) repored having led a

    workers compensaion claim in he pas ve years. Injuries are also saisically more

    likely o happen he longer you are in he indusry: or every one year increase in ruck

    driving experience, he odds o injury increases by 6 per cen.

    is sheer luck nobody was killed.

    It is the waiting that hurts. It can cost drivers sometimes 2-8 hours per day

    unpaid. This means you need to drive a further 8-12 hours a day (after your

    8 hours wait) just to make reasonable wages for the time you are away.

    There are too many hours you work for no pay. And there is a huge

    lack of access to basic facilities such as toilets we are not dogs!! 17
