Statistics for Young Drivers• 16 year-olds have higher crash rates than drivers of any other age.

• 16-year-olds are three times more likely to die in a motor vehicle crash than the average of all drivers.

• Drivers age 15-20 accounted for 12.9 percent of all the drivers involved in fatal crashes and 16 percent of all the drivers involved in police-reported crashes in 2006

• 20 percent of 11th grade drivers reported at least one crash over the past year, while nearly 3 percent experienced two or more crashes.

• In 2006, 5,156 13 to 19-year-old drivers were involved in fatal crashes.• fatality rate for drivers ages 16 to 19, based on miles driven, is four times higher

than for drivers ages 25 to 69.

• Child passengers (under age 16 ) driven by teenagers (ages 16 to 19) have three times the risk of injury in a crash than children driven by adults. Overall, 9 percent of child fatalities occur with a driver under age 19.

Speeding Ticket Cost• A traffic officer will cost his department the

average of $75,000 per year while he can be expected to issue between $150,000 to $200,000 in speeding ticket citations.

Speeding Can Kill• Speed is a factor in nearly one-third of all fatal crashes. Speed-related

crashes cost society more than $23 billion a year.*

• Of all drivers aged 15-24 years of age involved in fatal crashes, 32 percent were speeding.
