The days might be shorter and the weather a lot more unpredictable, but there is still plenty happening in autumn and winter in and around the borough. From collecting conkers to laughing along with a local pantomime, we asked local blogger Jodie from www.maidenheadmum.co.uk to share a few of her favourite family activities at this time of year.

Autumn exploringWe are blessed with many beautiful open spaces in the borough so it’s a great time of year to get exploring. My two children enjoy looking for conkers at Riverside Gardens park, and Ray Mill island always looks fabulous in autumn when the leaves on the trees change colour. You’ll see fabulous stunning colours along the riverside in Windsor too. Oaken Grove park also looks spectacular in autumn and winter, especially with an early morning frost.

It’s behind you! Watching a pantomime is a family tradition for many of us and we are lucky that we have plenty of choice on our doorstep so you get all of the fun of a live show without having to trek into London. We loved the panto at the Magnet last year. This year you can watch Snow White at the Pearce Suite Theatre at the Magnet or Dick Whittington in the Desborough Theatre, Town Hall in December.

Community wardens' accreditation

Through the additional powers, the wardens will be able to deal with incidents such as anti-social behaviour, disorder and nuisance, and more, along with improving the exchange of information between them and Thames Valley Police.

Andy Aldridge, community warden lead, said: "This is an exciting time for us and the whole community wardens team are looking forward to the further training that comes with accreditation, and putting what we learn into practice for the benefit of communities across the borough.”

John Campbell, chief constable for Thames Valley Police, paid a visit to Town Hall, Maidenhead, where the wardens were presented with their CSAS certificates in an award ceremony.

Wardens will continue to assist communities in addition to any new enforcement powers.

The community wardens were awarded Community Safety Accreditation Scheme (CSAS) accreditation in September, which gives them targeted police powers to better support our communities.

In previous years we’ve had prizes of family skating tickets for Windsor on Ice, LEGOLAND© Windsor Resort tickets, health and beauty treats, day’s out, delicious meals and afternoon teas at local restaurants and hotels, and much more.

Two of the first six permanent Hostile Vehicle Mitigation (HVM) measures have been installed in Windsor, with work on the remaining four to begin after Christmas.Peascod Street and Sheet Street have seen the bespoke designs introduced, replacing the temporary measures that were put in after the Westminster attacks of 2017.

The gates for each location are unique and have been designed with each area’s conservation status in mind, ensuring that they are fully integrated with the surrounding area.

After the Christmas break, the other four HVM measures that make up phase one of the scheme will be installed in:

• Victoria Street; west of Sheet Street near to the pedestrian crossing

• Park Street; at the junction with Sheet Street

• Castle Hotel; at the High Street entrance to their parking yard

• Thames Street; by the junction with River Street

Details on how the next four installations will affect the nearby roads will be available closer to the time but as with any roadworks, the aim is to keep disruption to a minimum.

The new and improved library re-opened in October with the introduction of a ‘pod’ and self-service kiosk which replaces the traditional main counter.

The self-service kiosk has proven particularly popular as it also gives volunteers and staff extra time to assist customers and staff extra time to arrange activities and events, such as storytimes.

Old Windsor Library gets modern overhaul

New children’s play area in Shurlock Road Nature Reserve

A stylish area for children and a brand new bathroom are just two of the improvements made to Old Windsor Library.

An exciting new children’s play area was opened in August in Shurlock Road Nature Reserve.

The reserve, which is rich in native plant species, now boasts a marshy grassland, scenic pond, picnic benches and the new natural play area for children to enjoy.

Situated to the south east of Waltham St Lawrence, Shurlock Road features a small car park for six cars, including one disabled space, along with eight cycle spaces.

More information can be found by visiting www.rbwm.gov.uk and searching for ‘Shurlock Road Nature Reserve.

Vaccinating your child could be life-saving

Keep warm and well this winter

Healthy, skilled and independent residentsPublicHealth

Research from around the world shows that immunisation is the safest way to protect your child’s health while also protecting other vulnerable members of the community. Until now the UK’s effective and successful immunisation programme has helped reduce the number of children affected by these serious diseases, including measles, which is why many of them are unrecognisable to us today.

However, if children are not immunised they run the risk of becoming infected and infecting other vulnerable people. This is because the bugs that cause them continue to circulate in some parts of the world. In today’s highly inter-connected world, these bugs can cross geographical borders and cause disease in people who are not protected. This can cause the re-emergence of these diseases.

In choosing to vaccinate you are protecting your child and those around your child. All vaccines are completely safe, including the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine.

In the UK vaccines are routinely offered to everyone free of charge on the NHS.  From eight weeks old, babies and children are entitled to a range of vaccinations that

will protect them again a number of serious infections including whooping cough, tetanus, measles, mumps, rubella and flu.

If you have not arranged for your child to receive their vaccinations or think they may have missed a dose contact your GP who will be able to arrange an appointment.

Keep warmKeeping your home heated to at least 18 degrees will help keep you healthy. If you can’t afford to heat your whole house heating the rooms you live in during the day and then your bedroom just before bed can help keep costs under control. Insulating your home can also help increase warmth while reducing costs.

Eat wellFood is a vital source of energy and helps to keep your body warm so have plenty of hot food and drinks. Aim to include five daily portions of fruit and vegetables in your diet and don’t forget tinned and frozen vegetables count towards your five a day.

Stock up

If you are not on mains gas or electricity make sure you have a supply of heating oil, LPG or solid fuel so you do not run out. Stock up on tinned and frozen foods so you don’t have to go out too much when it’s cold or icy. Make sure you have spare medication in case you are unable to go out.

ExerciseKeep moving if you can, this will help keep you warm. Try not to sit for more than an hour – get up and walk around, make a hot drink and spread housework throughout the day.  If walking is a problem try moving your arms and legs whilst sitting or wiggling your fingers and toes.

Dress for the cold weatherWear a few layers of thin clothing rather than one thick layer; this will trap the heat better to keep you warm. Socks and hats are great too and are a good idea to keep you warm in bed. Thin layers of clothes made from cotton, wool or fleecy fibres are particularly good and help maintain body heat. Wear well-fitting slippers with a good grip indoors and shoes with a good grip outside to prevent slips, trips and falls.

Look out for othersCheck on frail or older neighbours or relatives, especially those living alone or who have serious illnesses to make sure they are safe, warm and well.

With the winter season now upon us it's important we all take steps to keep warm and well this winter.

Get the flu vaccineThe flu vaccine is available to

• all children aged two to ten (but not 11 years or older).

• babies up to six months.

• pregnant women.

• those aged 65 years and over.

• those in long-stay residential care homes.

• carers.

• close contacts of immunocompromised individuals.

Earlier this year the World Health Organisation (WHO) withdrew the United Kingdom’s (UK) measles free status following an increase in reported cases which have been attributed to a worrying trend in the reduction of children being vaccinated against serious diseases.

A big thank you to all the residents who joined me on the Royal Windsor Steam Express from Windsor and Eton Riverside to Waterloo on 3 September.

It was a very successful day and we raised £4,395 for Thames Hospice. We also raised just over £1,200 at the Afternoon Tea held in the Guildhall on the 17 October.

2019/20 are important years for Thames Hospice as they progress their new build at Bray Lake. I am hoping to raise a significant sum for the charity during my mayoral year and would be delighted if you were able to help me to do that.

Tickets are on sale for the Christmas wreath-making workshop which will take place on Wednesday 4 December in the Guildhall, for £40 each.

The Mayor's Charity Christmas Meal takes place on Saturday 7 December, tickets are £45 and are available from the Mayor's Secretary. I hope to see you there.

The Mayor’s Annual Spring Ball will be held at Ascot Racecourse on the evening of Saturday 2 May – see advert on page 34 for details.

If you or the company you work for are able to supply a good quality auction prize or sponsor an element of any of the events please register your interest with the Mayor’s Secretary email [email protected] or telephone 01628 796223.

Thank you to everyone who supported my Coffee Morning in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support on 26 September – we raised nearly £400 for this important charity.

Message fromthe Mayor

Representatives from a wide range of community groups that help to support Royal Borough residents in a number of ways attend the meetings to talk about projects they have been working on and look for like-minded groups to pair up with.

A number of successful community partnerships have been formed as a result of the One Borough group bringing all of the different community groups together.

And to make the meetings even more inclusive for all of the borough’s residents, each one is held at a different venue throughout Ascot, Maidenhead and Windsor in order to reach as many people as possible.

Examples of groups who attend One Borough on a regular basis include Men’s Matters, WAM Get Involved and Norden Farm, along with a number of smaller groups that often work with vulnerable clients.

A directory listing the groups that attend regularly is in the process of being compiled and will be publicly available on the agenda of each meeting.

Meetings are held every three months and all are welcome to attend.

If you’re a member of a community group that is looking for extra support, or somewhere to talk about the work you’re doing, then come along and see what help is available to you.

If you’d like to give a talk at an upcoming meeting, or simply come along and listen to what others have to say, contact Mark Beeley in the democratic services team on [email protected] or 01628 796345.

One Borough groupIf you belong to a community organisation that’s looking to network with similar groups in Windsor and Maidenhead, the One Borough group could be just for you.

Wearing the ribbon is a personal pledge to never, excuse or remain silent about male violence against women.  The campaign starts on 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and runs for ‘16 days of action’.

Last year 2,700 incidents of domestic abuse were reported to Thames Valley Police in the borough. While the international campaign focuses on abuse towards women, the Domestic Abuse Forum would like to use the campaign as an opportunity to highlight that men can also be victims of domestic abuse.

Domestic abuse is a crime. Anyone experiencing domestic abuse should not feel they are alone - there is support and help available locally. Domestic abuse can happen to anyone in any relationship, regardless of social group, class, age, race, disability, sexuality or gender.  It can occur at any time – in a new relationship or after many years, while still in a relationship, during separation or even after separation. Signs to look out for can include one partner being afraid of the other, personality changes, low self-esteem, being absent from work or social occasions, physical injuries and excuses for frequent injuries.

White ribbons will be available from Maidenhead Library and Windsor Library during the 16 days of action.

All proceeds from the sale of white ribbons will go directly to the Dash (Domestic Abuse Stops Here) Charity, who are commissioned to provide advocacy and support to victims of domestic abuse in the borough.

Extending parking enforcement hoursA one year pilot scheme will increase parking enforcement presence in rural and out of town areas as part of NSL’s contract extension with the Royal Borough.NSL, who provide all parking enforcement across the borough, will see their weekly contracted hours increase by 25%, allowing them additional time to focus on specific problem areas in the borough, along with smaller communities outside of Ascot, Maidenhead and Windsor.

Residents can highlight areas of concern using our handy online report-it function, and ward councillors and parish councils can also advise the team on where to patrol. Along with this one year pilot scheme, NSL’s contact has been extended for a further two years.

By reporting problem parking our parking enforcement

will be able to send regular patrols to parking

Around the Royal Borough

Meet your councillors

How long have you lived in the borough? My wife and I have lived in Ascot for more than 30 years. It is a very pleasant place, close to the facilities of London and the rural Windsor Great Park.

What made you want to become a councillor? I was a parish councillor

before and believed that I could achieve more for our local community as a borough councillor, which has proven to be the case.

What have been your highlights of the role so far? Writing the justification to persuade fellow councillors to support a leisure centre at Charters is one, and working with a local girl’s school to resolve a significant traffic issue would be another.

Do you have another job? No, I find the role of councillor a full time job.

Tell us something we might not know about you? When I lived in Buckinghamshire I owned a number of horses which I show jumped. Also, my mother was Austrian.

Where is your favourite place in your ward? Standing in one of the boxes at Ascot Racecourse and looking at the incredible green views in the direction of Windsor.

What is your main aspiration for the Royal Borough and its residents? I want the borough’s considerable changes to reflect the pleasant area in which we live. As lead member for Ascot, I want to see Ascot rejuvenated and create a sense of place that is admired by visitors and loved by local residents.

How long have you lived in the borough? I moved to Maidenhead in 1993, so this is my 26th year.

What made you want to become a councillor? When I joined the Liberal Democrats in 2016 it never occurred to me to run for office. However, after

working on a General Election and two by-elections I caught the bug. Running for Council and being elected Councillor are life changing experiences. I highly recommend it.

What have been your highlights of the role so far? More of a surprise than a highlight, but discovering that people who oppose you politically share the same sense of purpose and duty as you.

Do you have another job? No, I am retired.

Tell us something we might not know about you? There’s not much left unknown after my election campaign, but I’m a life-long Plymouth Argyle fan, which I don’t think came up.

Where is your favourite place in your ward? The Craufurd Arms! Honourable mention for St Luke’s Cemetery.

What is your main aspiration for the Royal Borough and its residents? Plentiful affordable housing and securing the best possible outcomes for the areas most affected by Heathrow expansion.

Cllr John Story - Ascot & Sunninghill

Cllr David Hilton - Ascot & SunninghillCouncillor John Baldwin - Belmont

Local Councillors are elected by the community to decide how the council should carry out its various activities. They represent public interest as well as individuals living within the ward in which he or she has been elected to serve a term of office.

They have regular contact with the general public through council meetings, telephone calls or surgeries.

Around the Royal Borough

How long have you lived in the borough? I went to school in Sunningdale and Windsor and have lived in South Ascot for over 40 years.

What made you want to become a councillor? Local services have an immediate impact on the quality of life in an area - it's good to be able to help improve them.

What have been your highlights of the role so far? Helping in the fight to save Heatherwood Hospital, supporting the new Oaks Leisure Centre at Charters and the new parking arrangements in South Ascot which have greatly improved traffic flows at peak times.

Do you have another job? I work for a national charity providing legal advice to people who cannot afford lawyers.

Tell us something we might not know about you? This year I learned to fly.

Where is your favourite place in your ward? Anywhere the White Bus goes - the ride from Ascot to Windsor through the Great Park must be one of the most beautiful bus rides in the country.

What is your main aspiration for the Royal Borough and its residents? To be a clean, green, low tax and resident-responsive council providing the highest standards of education, social care and cultural/leisure activities, whilst keeping our pavements and roads safe and pothole-free.

Contacting your councillor - If you would like to contact a councillor, please visit our website www3.rbwm.gov.uk/aboutus for details.

Cllr Simon Bond - Belmont

Cllr Julian Sharpe - Ascot & Sunninghill

How long have you lived in the borough? Since 1979, first near St Luke’s in Maidenhead and now near Castle Hill.

What made you want to become a councillor? I could see that things had to be done differently if public services were to be effective, and I wanted to give something back.

I first joined the community action group for my area, which brings together the neighbourhood police, council and residents to see if together they can resolve local issues.

What have been your highlights of the role so far? Simply being able to help residents wherever possible to resolve issues, which involves meeting so many nice people from across Maidenhead.

Do you have another job? No but I still do some of the voluntary work with charities and community organisations I did previously.

Tell us something we might not know about you? I love train travel to exciting cities like Rome, Berlin, Venice and Florence, not forgetting London on our doorstep.

Where is your favourite place in your ward? The independent businesses which always give a warm welcome, including Italian Continental Stores, Gordon Road Stores, Pink & Perfect Florists and the two pubs (Craufurd Arms and Windsor Castle).

What is your main aspiration for the Royal Borough and its residents? For Maidenhead town centre to become a vibrant place where people want to go.

How long have you lived in the borough? I have lived in Sunninghill for nearly 25 years. The village has a very strong community feel to it, with great local shops.

What made you want to become a councillor? I have been involved with local community events for

most of my time in Sunninghill, such as the Sunningdale Area Carnival and the Quince Players amateur dramatics group, as well as helping with the Neighbourhood Plan, so when the opportunity arose, it seemed like another interesting way of helping the community.

What have been your highlights of the role so far? There have been many great moments that have arisen from this work and I have met some wonderful people in the area.

Do you have another job? Yes, I work in procurement in the IT sector.

Tell us something we might not know about you? I need a coffee in the morning!

Where is your favourite place in your ward? The Cordes Hall is probably the single place where I have spent most time. It works very well in the village as a theatre, and more recently as a cinema.

What is your main aspiration for the Royal Borough and its residents? I would love to see Ascot named as the first carbon neutral town in the country.
