Dear Friends,

I invite you parishioners to remember the dreams you had for your future when you were newlyweds. I ask you young

people and children what you envision your life to be when you are adults. Perhaps you imagine having a family or having a

career in which you serve people in some capacity. Sometimes our hopes come true and sometimes life takes a different

turn and is better than you ever expected!

I reverently picture the Trinity, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit planning to create a universe. The foundation of everything

made would be LOVE. They would create a planet, called earth with human beings. These human beings are made of body

and soul. The soul would be immortal. In the course of time, the Son of God would become a man called Jesus. He would

reveal who God is. He would save these humans from the evil they do to one another. He would give His life for them,

including being crucified. He would rise from death and promise eternal life to all. Death would ultimately be conquered.

The Father, Son, and Spirit cherish who they created with an immense love.

Fast forward from creation to Jesus at the Last Supper. In today’s Gospel, we are privy to hearing an intimate prayer of

Jesus to His Father, concerning all who believe in Him and who in the future would believe in Him.

Jesus prays, “Holy Father, I pray not only for them (the Apostles), but also for those who will believe in me through their

word, so that they may all be one, as you Father are in me and I in you, that they also be in us, that the world may believe

you sent me. (I pray)… that the world may know…that you loved them even as you loved me.” (Jn. 17:20-26)

What does this unity mean? We are all so unique, so different. Unity does not mean uniformity. Perhaps what God had

in mind was mutual respect, dignity, forgiveness, compassion and love. It is the recognition that we all came from God for a

limited time on earth and after death will go back to God in eternal life. Our individual creation is a fulfillment of God’s

desire.

Further on, Jesus prays, “Father, they are your gift to me…I made known to them your name and I will make it known,

that the love with which you loved me may be in them and I in them.” (Jn. 17:24)

Isn’t that amazing, that in spite of our weakness, frailty, and even sin, we are a gift to Jesus? Jesus treasures us. We are

not a present that is thrown away or given to someone else (re-gifted)!

However, there is disunity in families, neighborhoods, countries, and in our Church. There is so much that divides us.

When all is said and done, we are dependent on God for every breath and heartbeat. No one is a super-power. In fact, we

are all vulnerable. We need each other. When we realize this, we are invited to see the goodness in each other. We may

have differences of ideologies, come from various cultures and participate in unique customs. However, our common

ground is that we are all human, all children of God. As Catholic Christians, we are all united in Christ through our baptism.

That is a universal truth.

In Jesus’ priestly prayer to the Father, He is asking that we humans acknowledge the mystery and beauty and

preciousness of our relationship with one another and with God in Christ.

Is this too profound? Perhaps. Maybe we can just start by looking for the blessing each person brings to us. Granted, in

some cases, we may have to look very hard! We can pray to the Spirit that we see what God sees when He looks at His

people. When we look in the mirror, we can ask the same question. The answer is love, only love.

In The Little Prince by Antoine Saint Exupéry, the fox tells the little prince, “It is only with the heart that one sees rightly;

what is essential is invisible to the eye. It is only with the heart that one sees rightly; what is essential is invisible to the

eye.”

May we be open to the miracle that we are each day and thank God for one another.

Peace, Sr. Joanne
