Dear Families,

It’s hard to believe its June already. As I write the birds are

singing and the sun is shining – a true sign of great summer

weather and the completion of another great year at Sacred

Heart. Before we get to the end however there is still a lot

happening: Beach Day, Year End Walk to Mass, Play Day, Civvies

Days, our Talent Show, saying good bye to our grade 8s, and much

more – please look over the calendar.

At this time we also look back over the year and consider our

successes – the yearbook, our begonia day, our community skate,

our Christmas play, ME to WE fundraising, our Halloween

fundraiser, Reconciliation, First Communion, and Confirmation.

One thing that is still in the works is our new logo and spirit wear

– we will be all over that this fall.

We wish everyone a safe and happy summer. Ensure that your

children have time to read and that you spend time reading with

them. The Sacred Heart community is forever growing and

demonstrating its Christian spirit. We look forward to great

things happening again next year and seeing you in September.

Yours in Christ,

C. Nazar

The boys’ soccer team played a long day of soccer at their divisional tournament on June 1st and the girls’ on June 2nd. The boys faced great opposition but managed to display great sportsmanship. Their coaches, Ms. Burdi and Mr. Farquharson would

like to congratulate the effort put forth by Braiden, Reuben, Jared, Shamar, Ethan, Judell, Nahom, Joven, Rafael, Presley, and Brandon. The girls too faced tough competition but represented us well. Their coaches, Ms. Burdi and Mr. Farquharson would like to congratulate the effort put forth by Veronica, Brianna, Katherine, Keziah, Melia, Isabella, Chiarah, Sofia, Tiana, Shanna-Kay and Sashawna. Way to go Sacred Heart!

A WORK IN PROGRESS – OUR MURAL

Our grade 7 and 8 students have been meticulously working on our school mural led by grade 8s Katherine C. and Karelle S. During Autism month we handed out

one puzzle piece to every classroom and asked staff to

facilitate a class discussion dedicated to people having

differences, talents and needs and how we would like to

feel when demonstrating these to others. We know that

there is often a risk that we take when trying to display

parts of our personality or character to others. Staff

posed this question to students:

How do you want to feel when you demonstrate your

differences, talents and needs to others? I want to

feel_________________________.

Students then represented their responses on a puzzle

piece which you see on the mural. The focus was

originally created during autism month but it is easily

extended to all. We hope to have a big unveiling this fall.

BIKE-TO-SCHOOL WEEK

Our second year of participation in Bike-to-School week has been a great success. We had nearly 60 bikes in the school every day. Great job to all those that rode in during the week….And kudos to parents who rode with them. We’ll do it again next year!!!

PLAY DAY More fun is coming with the Sacred Heart Annual Play Day on Wednesday, June 22nd. Students will be involved in tons of fun and safe games and

play. We will be welcoming Special Olympics of Ontario to run integrated sports activities. We are also welcoming our police, paramedic and fire services friends. We will have an ice cream truck on site, face painting, balloon animals and tons of activities during the school day. There is a cost this year of $5 which will include a hot dog lunch, drink, popcorn and ice cream. All activities will be conducted on school grounds. Please make sure your child comes with a hat and sunscreen for a fun-filled day outdoors. Running shoes (not sandals) are the recommended footwear. We will have parent volunteers here to support the day!! YEAR-END MASS – WE’RE WALKING!!

Our year end mass is nearly upon us. Last year we walked as a community to St. Barnabas for mass and we will again this year. Last year our police friends held up traffic so

that we stayed together physically and spiritually. Our walk to mass demonstrates to ourselves and those around that Sacred Heart is a Catholic community held together by the strength of its faith. As we near the end of this school year, we invite you to join us in the celebration of the Eucharist on Friday, June 17th. We will be leaving on foot from Sacred Heart to St. Barnabas just after 9:00AM and hope to begin mass by 10:00AM. All are welcome.

PAINTED LADY BUTTERFLIES

Mrs. Sottile's Grade 1 class is releasing their hatched Painted Lady butterflies in this month. Welcome!

LIBRARY BOOKS/TEXT BOOKS As we enter the last few weeks of the school year, we wish to draw your attention to our request for the prompt return of all library books and text books by Friday, June 17th. You can be of great help to us by checking at home for these items and by encouraging your children to return all school books. BATTLE OF THE BEGONIAS Thanks to the support of our green thumbed staff members and students we planted 500 begonias in the front of the school next to the parking lot. We weeded, added soil and planted. We have been watering and caring for them every day. Some classes made the planting and growing of plants part of their instructional program. Recently weeds have sprung back up but we were all over them, clearing them out. We hope our plants last until the fall.

STAY ACTIVE THIS SUMMER!

“As a nation we are becoming less active than previous generations. In 2015, Canadian kids scored a D− in overall physical activity, with only 9% of 5- to 17-year-olds getting 60 minutes of heart-pumping activity daily. Experts speculate that by attempting to keep kids safe we inadvertently decrease activity and potentially increase the risk for chronic disease.

By now we know that physical activity helps reduce stress and supports our overall health. It improves self-esteem, promotes healthy growth and development, helps achieve a healthy weight and builds strong bones and muscles. Physical activity helps students to perform better in school, develop social relationships, meet challenges, gain satisfaction and build a sense of community. Physical activity can have a strong positive impact on overall health and quality of life.”

GR. 8 LAKE ST. GEORGE TRIP Our Gr. 8 students returned from a four day overnight trip to Lake St. George Field Centre on Tuesday, May 24th. Students from St. Bartholomew accompanied our students on this trip. Our students had a great time participating in outdoor activities and raising their awareness of the environment and our role in it as shepherds of the earth. Thank you to Mr. McLean, Ms. Hay, Ms. Packowski, and Ms. Malloy for supporting the trip. TD SUMMER READING CLUB

The TD Summer Reading Club is coming to a Toronto Public Library branch near you! The TD Summer Reading Club is an inclusive program, in English and French, that strives to engage all children in the joy of reading while championing Canadian

writers and illustrators. The program helps connect families with books and builds confidence in reading through the delivery of free incentives and fun, accessible library activities. Children who register for the TD Summer Reading Club at their local library receive free program materials and are encouraged to earn stickers by reading over the summer. They are also invited to participate in programs organized at their local library branch and share their love of reading with children across the country through the TD Summer Reading Club website. A list of recommended books is provided, but kids can also connect with local library staff for more great reading suggestions. For the summer of 2016, our theme is Wild and we're encouraging kids to escape their everyday, step outside their ordinary and seek the unknown and untamed through reading. For more information, please visit our website at http://www.tdsummerreadingclub.ca or call Malvern branch of Toronto Public Library at 416-396-8969. There will be a brochure about the TD Summer Reading Club included with your child's report card in June.
