I remember my first day in the teacher’s lunchroom in 1991. My only friend was a teacher I had met on the day of my interview, so I latched onto her and walked in. I gravi-tated toward a table inside, but my new friend said, “Oh no, we don’t sit in here, we sit outside.” Apparently, those teachers who sit inside were the ones who crossed the pick-et line in ’89. Those who sat outside on the patio were those who “Walked the line in ’89.” The teachers were deeply divided and the tension was terrible. I learned that those who went on strike took a strong con-trarian view of the administration and those who crossed the line took a sympathetic view. This view continued for years until we got a new principal who slowly changed the culture with the words, “All of us want what is best for the children, all of us are on the same side.” With these words she slowly built trust and trans-formed the culture to be united in purpose and collaborative in our work. Palm Sunday is the day that we see everyone united in their vision of Jesus as Messiah. But Jesus’ glory did not depend on His popularity with the people. Jesus’ glory depended on His perfect obedience to God’s plan of salvation. As soon as Jesus was crucified, the very same people who cried, “Hosannah,” deserted Him to die alone on the cross. It took Jesus’ death and subsequent resurrection before people began to understand how it was that the cross re-vealed His glory as Savior of the world. Even then, society was deeply divided and continues to be deeply divided over who Jesus is. Today we celebrate Jesus’s triumphant entry into Jerusa-lem, with the terrible tension of knowing that he is journey-ing closer and closer to His execution. The passion narra-tive details the worst in our humanity and sinfulness and the depths of God’s love and mercy which is even greater. God’s work of salvation in His Son Jesus not only cleanses us of our personal sin but also unites us in love as a people. It is through our decision to follow Jesus, allowing Him to transform us more and more into His likeness, that we are then able fulfill our purpose as salt and light in the world. It is God in His grace that we are able to fulfill the com-mand of Jesus to love each other the way He loved us, by forgiving each other and loving one another as brother and sister. We look forward to celebrating the glorious resurrection of Jesus, His conquering of sin and fear of death so that we can live in harmony with one another, an abundant life, a life of joy and unbridled love. Estimados amigos,

Recuerdo mi primer día en el comedor de los maestros en 1991. Mi única amiga era una maestra que había conocido el día de mi entrevista, así que me aferré a ella y entré. Me acercaba hacia una mesa dentro, pero mi nueva amiga me dijo: "Oh no, no nos sentamos aquí, nos sentamos afuera". Al parecer, los profesores que se sientan dentro fueron los que cruzaron el piquete en el 89. Los que se sentaron afuera en el patio fueron los que "caminaron la línea en el 89". Los profesores estaban profundamente divididos y la tensión era terrible.

Me enteré de que los que iban a la huelga tomaron una fuer-te visión contraria de la administración y los que cruzaron la línea tomaron una visión comprensiva.

Este punto de vista continuó durante años hasta que obtuvi-mos una nueva directora que poco a poco cambió la cultura con las palabras: "Todos queremos lo mejor para los niños, todos estamos del mismo lado". Con estas palabras poco a poco construyó confianza y transformó la cultura para estar unida en propósito y colaborativa en nuestro trabajo.

El Domingo de Ramos es el día en que vemos a todos uni-dos en su propia visión de Jesús como Mesías. Pero la glo-ria de Jesús no dependía de Su popularidad con el pueblo. La gloria de Jesús dependía de Su perfecta obediencia al plan de salvación de Dios. Tan pronto como Jesús fue cruci-ficado, la misma gente que gritó, "Hosannah", lo abandonó para morir solo en la cruz.

Tomó la muerte de Jesús y la resurrección posterior antes de que la gente comenzara a entender cómo era que la cruz reveló Su gloria como Salvador del mundo. Aun así, la so-ciedad estaba profundamente dividida y sigue estando pro-fundamente dividida sobre quién es Jesús.

Hoy celebramos la entrada triunfal de Jesús en Jerusalén, con la terrible tensión de saber que está viajando cada vez más cerca de Su ejecución. La narrativa pasional detalla lo peor de nuestra humanidad y pecado y las profundidades del amor y la misericordia de Dios, que es aún mayor.

La obra de salvación de Dios en Su Hijo Jesús no sólo nos limpia de nuestro pecado personal, sino que también nos une en el amor como pueblo. Es a través de nuestra decisión de seguir a Jesús, permitiéndole transformarnos cada vez más en Su semejanza, para que entonces podamos cumplir nuestro propósito como sal y luz en el mundo. Es Dios en Su gracia que somos capaces de cumplir el man-dato de Jesús de amarnos el uno al otro de la manera en que Él nos amó, perdonándonos unos a otros y amándonos unos a otros como hermano y hermana. Esperamos celebrar la gloriosa resurrección de Jesús, Su conquista del pecado y el miedo a la muerte para que poda-mos vivir en armonía unos con otros, una vida abundante, una vida de gozo y amor desenfrenado. The term “consensual” implies that a person freely agrees to do something and understands what they are consenting to do. NORMS ON FASTING & ABSTINENCE

Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of fasting and abstinence for Catholics. In addition, Fridays during Lent are obligatory days of abstinence. For members of the Latin Catholic Church, the norms on fasting are obligatory from age 18 until age 59. When fast-ing, a person is permitted to eat one full meal, as well as two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal. The norms concerning abstinence from meat are binding upon members of the Latin Catholic Church from age 14 on-wards.
