Happy New Year!

When you get this letter, I will be snowboarding in Canada

for a day as I accompany high school and college students

on a pilgrimage to see the Saints of North America.

This weekend is the Feast of the Holy Family. The readings

speak about the virtues of a holy family. We see the attacks

are prevalent in society against the family with the high rate

of divorce, same-sex marriage, and many couples not seek-

ing marriage by living together in non-committed arrange-

ments outside of the sacrament of marriage…How do fami-

lies survive and stay strong?

Put God first:

There is the old adage that was coined by Fr. Peyton: “the

family that prays together, stays together.” Pope Francis

recently declared Fr. Peyton a Servant of God (which is the

first step to sainthood.). Notice with the Holy Family in to-

day’s Gospel it says: “When the days were completed for

their purification according to the law of Moses, they took

him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord.” In a re-

cent study it was found that:

“78 percent of couples who attend church together report-

ed being "very happy" or "extremely happy" with their rela-

tionship.” Parents have to discipline their kids:

A parent has basically 18 years to help develop a child into

an adult. Unfortunately, many don’t take this responsibility

seriously. This is evident by the number of adult “children”

walking around. The authoritative parent explains reasons

behind demands, encourages give and take, and sets stand-

ards and enforces them firmly but does not regard itself as

infallible. Studies have shown that all ages, the most self-

confidant and socially responsible children have authorita-

tive parents.

Exercise patience with those you live with:

…and those who will visit you this Christmas season! Pa-

tience is one of the fruits of the Holy Spirit. St. Paul tells us

in his letter to the Romans to be patient even in times of

tribulation!

Put on, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, heartfelt compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and

patience, bearing with one another and forgiving one another,

if one has a grievance against another;

In Christ, Fr. Larry
