The current facilities at the Sachibondu Rural Health Centre are of poor quality and limited space. The Centre serves tens of thousands of isolated people, with many having to walk days to reach this much needed source of help. With a history spanning more than five dec-ades, development and growth of the centre has always been dictated by urgent need, with little or no design input. Our aim is to change this, by providing spaces that can have a posi-tive impact on patient and staff health and well-being.

The current Health Centre serves an immedi-ate (those who can reach the centre on the same day as leaving their home) catchment area of around 10,000 people. Beyond that, the wider catchment area is difficult to esti-mate due to the extremely remote location. In many cases patients have been reported to walk or travel up to ten days from their home in order to reach the Centre. It is anticipated that this catchment area could number well in excess of 30,000 people.

Recent Annual Patient Numbers:2015: 2,456 OPD | 1,981 IPD | 326 MCH2014: 2,053 OPD | 1,674 IPD | 277 MCH2013: 2,197 OPD | 1,760 IPD | 304 MCH

Sachibondu Rural Health Centre is currently supported by the Zambian Government Minis-try of Health, The Churches Health Association of Zambia (CHAZ) and charitable donations raised overseas.

DESIGNING FOR HEALTHIn 2013, Dr Tony Moll, a medical doctor at the Church of Scotland Hospital in Tegula Ferry, South Africa, reported an outbreak of extreme drug-resistant tuberculosis (TB). In identifying the cause, he said “the hospital wasn’t de-signed for airborne infection control”.

The hospital in question was poorly designed even by the most basic of standards. Wards with little natural light and poor ventilation, cramped corridors with waiting patients, and no proper waste disposal systems. In circum-stances such as this, renowned global health expert, Dr Paul Farmer, claimed that it was the building itself that killed people.

If it’s accepted that poor design can damage health then it’s logical to think that good de-sign can do the opposite and help heal people.

Our project is committed to delivering spaces which can enhance psychological and physi-ological health and well-being and are based on an understanding of local health care prac-tices to improve the health of patients beyond the building.

“Health is the state of physical and mental well-being, not just the absence of infection and disease.”

Jackson Amone, Dpt. of Clinic Services, Uganda Ministry of Health

OUR PROJECTOrkidstudio are working on a long term basis with Sachibondu to develop a masterplan and development strategy for the Centre’s future growth, supporting an upgrade in national sta-tus to a First Level Hospital which will ensure greater support from the Ministry of Health and provision of more and better trained staff.

Construction begins June 2016 and includes:• Out-patient department w/ EPI facilities.• X-Ray room & scanning equipment.• Improved WC and shower facilities.• Full operating theatre.• Extensive in-patient ward department.• TB and infectious diseases isolation ward.• Maternity care ward.

A second phase, in 2017, will include:• Palliative & Cancer Care Ward• Maternity Waiting Homes• Doctor’s Housing• Mortuary & Incinerator

We are collaborating with the following individ-uals and organisations to ensure exceptionally high standards in project delivery:• EMERGE Research, Edinbrugh Royal Infim-

rary and the University of Edinburgh (Staff Medical Training and Impact Assessment)

• Buro Happold (Environmental Engineers)• StructureMode (Structural Engineers)• Barr + Wray (Water Systems)• HOK (Medical Planning)• Bea Sennewald, HDR (Medical Planning)• The Mackintosh School of Architecture,

Glasgow School of Art (Research Input)

The current in-patient wards are too hot and poorly ventilated.

Proposed Design

PROJECT DELIVERY100% of funds raised will go directly towards the Sachibondu Project. We are looking for support towards the following costs:• Construction materials.• Local labour.• Hospital furniture.• Medical Equipment.

We can provide a full Bill of Quantities for the construction work on request.

We aim to provide innovative and responsive buildings at an exceptionally high quality, and have a proven track record globally.

The total construction cost (Phase 1), in-cluding local labour, is £120,000. Additional support is required for furniture and equip-ment.

The project will reuse a number of existing buildings and foundations, accounting for ap-proximately 30% of the total facilities once completed (after Phase 1).

Almost all of the materials to be used in the construction are produced on site or sourced locally. The foundations, walls and roof (vaulted) are constructed using compressed stabilised earth bricks (CSEBs) made from the soil on site. This has enabled us to dramati-cally reduce costs and deliver a hospital facility which is both higher quality and a fraction of the price compared to other healthcare build-ings in Zambia.
