Social Media Facebook Twitter Flickr YouTube Tweet Saber Junction Soldiers simulate mechanized warfare Oct. 26, 2012 By Todd Oliver, U.S. Army Europe Public Affairs HOHENFELS, Germany -- Saber Junction, the largest exercise of its kind that U.S. Army Europe has conducted in 20 years, entered its second phase this week and saw USAREUR's 2nd Cavalry Regiment train its ability to conduct an area defense against a modern armored enemy as part of its Decisive Action Training Environment rotation at the Joint Multinational Readiness Center in Hohenfels, Germany, Oct. 25. In a truly multinational battle, 2nd Cavalry Regiment used their U.S. Stryker combat vehicles, along with assistance from British tanks, Romanians and Bulgarians replicating host nation security forces to defend against a multinational opposing force comprised of seven different nations, and spearheaded by a company of German Leopard II main battle tanks. Major tank battles are only one aspect of the Army's DATE construct which emphasizes flexibility and requires units to be proficient in simultaneously conducting offensive, defensive and stability operations. Saber Junction 2012 is USAREUR's premier training exercise involving nearly 6,000 personnel from 19 nations and hundreds of military vehicles and aircraft. To accommodate the large number of armored and mechanized forces, the Maneuver Rights Area, an 2,000 square kilometer-expanse of land located around USAREUR's Grafenwoehr and Hohenfels Training Areas, was utilized.
