Supporting statement
I am a Popular Music student studying at the University of Gloucestershire. I actively participate in many volunteer roles, most prominently, The Scout Association, a youth organisation that aims to support members in three main areas: leadership, teamwork and personal development; I am also a recurring volunteer at Strike a Light Festival, a festival celebrating art and theatre in Gloucester.
Personally, I wholly agree with the QAA’s mission statement; I think that higher education needs to be maintained at a high standard as to not depreciate the quality of the resulting qualification. I also believe that the reputation of the QAA is paramount, to ensure improvements in higher education, and built upon the thoroughness, reliability and fairness behind the reviews. Having finished one year at university, I have experienced the pressure of higher education first-hand and, albeit only studying at one university, I can still use my knowledge of that institution as a benchmark to aid a discussion.
My role at scouts is as a leader, I need to: organise programmes, implement and run activities, support other leaders and members, occasionally administer first aid and, liaise with parents and the community as a representative of the group. I have learnt and developed many useful qualities from scouts and my previous employment, Spencer Grove care home, including: integrity, I maintain a fair, honest and trustworthy attitude to everything I do; respect, I take note to ensure that I show equal regard to any team member or customer alike thus making me more open and approachable; and standards, I tend to hold very high standards in my working and often ask myself “is this the best that it can be?” whilst avoiding “It’ll do” at all costs, this is probably born out of studying piano more than anything as there is a striking need to be meticulous about every detail and also to ensure eloquence in what is being played but my need to meet impeccable standards are also born out of working at the care home, a 5 star hygiene rated kitchen, required a diligent nature to maintain cleanliness and quality of care. I think that I would suit the job at hand because I am well accustomed to academic writing, requiring a passive tone and being completely unbiased on the topic at hand, I think it is really important to be able to form a strong argument for both the ‘for’ and ‘against’, despite any preconceived bias, as it helps to form ideas and flaws in a discussion, apropos of in-lecture debates.
I think I can bring a lot of assets to the job at hand, drawn from training I’ve received through Milford Care and The Scout Association, where I help teach basic vocational skills alongside a team of trained volunteers; I trust that I am reasonably eloquent and, I have a professional mindset.
