Welcome to Year 1! Miss Kealey and Mrs Bayliss would like to welcome you to Year 1. If you have any questions, concerns or queries at any point this year please do not hesitate in speaking to any of us. Things you need to know PE is on a Tuesday afternoon and Friday morning. Children will need a PE kit in school at all times in order to take part in PE. Please ensure that your child’s kit is clearly labelled with their name and also that earrings are removed before school or covered with plasters. Children can bring a snack for morning break time, please put it in their book bags so it can be kept in their drawers until playtime. Homework will be given out on a Friday to be returned the following Thursday. Spelling tests will be on Friday. Reading in Year 1 It is our aim to hear your child read individually at least once a week. They will be heard by Mrs Bayliss or myself. Your child will also be heard each week in a group guided reading session. These sessions involve reading strategies and will be developing their understanding ENGLISH This half term we will be looking at stories with familiar settings, poetry and labels, lists and captions. ScienceIn science we will be looking at ourselves and our bodies. This will include labelling body parts and using our senses to explore. The children will also look at how humans and animals move and grow.We will also look at sources of food whether it can come from an animal and types of common animals including mammals, amphibians and reptiles.

Computing In computing this term the children will be looking at programmable toys and word processing. The children will be using programmable toys and direct them to achieve a certain mission. – This will also be incorporated into the maths curriculum as it covers positional language. The children will also be familiarising themselves with a standard keyboard and learning how to navigate it. They will use it to create word banks, images with labels and

History - ToysThis half term in history we will be looking at toys from the past this unit looks at similarities and differences between toys today and toys in the past. It introduces children to the concepts of ‘old’ and ‘new’, and encourages them to think about the changes in their own lives and in those of their family or adults around them.

Art – Self PortraitsIn this unit children make a self-portrait to communicate ideas about themselves. They talk about images of children in drawings, paintings and photographs and artists’ self-portraits in order to develop ideas about how they will portray themselves. They will investigate a range of drawing materials and techniques and learn how to mix and use colour in a painting.

R.E – What does it mean to belong?In this unit, pupils will draw on their understanding of belonging, relating it to the way in which children are given a sense of belonging in different religions and cultures. They will look at how children are welcomed into different religious traditions. They will think about how people show that they belong and what is special about

PSHE – In PSHE we now follow the jigsaw programme. Then first piece of the jigsaw we will look at is being me in my world. The children will look at themselves as a person. What they like/dislike what they are good at and what they can do better in a neutral environment. The children have the support of the staff and their puzzle piece ‘Jigsaw Jack’ who we use to help

GEOGRAPHY – Around our school,This unit uses investigative tasks to introduce children to the idea of looking at their local area. The local area will be studied frequently during a child’s time in primary school and therefore this unit focuses on aspects of local features, land use and environment. Children will begin to identify features of the local area and categories them as natural and

MUSIC – Sounds interesting

This unit develops children's ability to identify different sounds and to change and use sounds expressively in response to a stimulus.
