Many of you may have read my emailearlier in the week to advise that MrSavill will be returning to GumdaleState School as your schoolPrincipal, starting Semester 2.

With just three weeks left remaining this term, it’s full steamahead here at Gumdale. Our Year 4s have been making theirown pocket rockets as part of a Science Incursion, our Year2s have been on an excursion to Koala Pine Sanctuary, ourGumdale Sport Aerobics teams have been participating in localchallenges, our Senior Band took part in the local Fanfareorchestra and band competition, and we held Prep Informationsessions for families looking to join Gumdale State Schoolstarting in 2019. Humanities and Social Sciences

You will no longer see history and geography on your child’sreport card. In line with the Australian curriculum, these learningareas have been replaced by HASS – Humanities and SocialSciences. HASS includes a study of history, geography, civicsand citizenship and economics and business. Reporting

At the end of every semester, schools report to parents ontheir child’s achievement, effort and behaviour. This semester,report cards will emailed to parents after 3pm on Wednesday27 June. As we visit classrooms and chat with students about theirreading and writing we are continually impressed with the greatefforts that students at Gumdale give to their learning. It is greatto see how students have progressed throughout the year.Congratulations to our students and teachers for always givingtheir best.

Moderation

Over the next two weeks our teachers will meet to look atsamples of student work. This process helps our teachersensure consistency when allocating student grades forreporting. Our teachers will then complete reporting onstudents’ learning for the end of semester report cards.

Please encourage your children to leave special toys andcollectables at home. Sometimes these items cause issuesat play time and may get lost which sometimes causesunnecessary distress at school.

Office Procedure for Payment of Excursions

Three weeks after an excursion has taken place One School willproduce a Credit Adjustment for those students who have notpaid. This is a system generated document which will clear yourstudents account for this excursion. If your student attendedand payment has not been received, you will be emailed a newinvoice for this particular excursion.

Please ensure you advise the office and teacher if your childwill not be attending the excursion, this will save you receivinganother invoice.

Prompt payment is of invoices will also ensure that additionalinvoices are not emailed to you, payment due dates are statedon the excursion letter which you receive the day before you areinvoiced.

STEAM News

Year 1

Students are investigating how landscapes change over timeby observing their garden grow throughout the term. They havebeen recording their observations using words and drawings.

Year 2

As part of their unit on the water journey students modelled rainfalling on a variety of surfaces.

STEAM Club Years 3-6

Waste reduction - ‘RECYCLING, ORGANICS & WASTE’ binswill be introduced in the year 3 to 6 eating areas. Stay tuned forthe Clubs educational video on what to put in each bin!

Compost bins – If you are handy with tools and have sometime we would greatly appreciate assistance in turning thestudent designs into reality. Contact Amanda Sheppard.

Gardening – ‘Today the STEAM club continued to preparefor the new kitchen gardens by planting seeds! We usednewspaper to make biodegradable seedling pots and madea mini greenhouse out of a plastic box to help the seedsgerminate during these colder winter days. Students made theirown newspaper pots and learned the method to successfulseed germination: gentle handling, using seed raising mix andkeeping the soil moist and warm. We expect to see greenshoots in the next 7-14 days! So far we have planted carrots,broccoli, nasturtiums and shallots but there is much more tocome! Each student took home their very own plant pot as

Year 6 Aspire Higher LeadershipIncursion

Last Thursday Hogan and Peter from Unleashing PersonalPotential came to Gumdale for the day to run their ‘AspireHigher’ leadership program with our year 6 students. It was afull day of training with the whole cohort over three high impactsessions. Students participated in team builders, initiative, andproblem solving activities with a servant leadership theme.

The firstworking party meeting will be taking place on Thursday 21June from 7:30pm at the Wynnum Manly Workers Sports Clublocated at 35 Bognor Road Tingalpa. We are seeking newworking party members to come and be involved in organisingthis event, no experience necessary, just come with a goodattitude and ability to jump in and assist with the planningand delivery of the event. Online Ordering

The Tuckshop and Uniform Shop offer an online orderingservice called Flexischools. Online ordering is convenient,provides you with 24/7 payment and ordering system that canbe accessed from home, work or on a mobile device. Youwon't be fumbling around for coins in the morning or looking fora brown paper bag. You can also purchase uniform items whenthe shop's not open and our volunteers will deliver the items toyour child's classroom. Flexischools registration is free and onlytakes a few minutes so get online at the website below.

Tuckshop News

Don’t forget all meal orders for the Tuckshop for first andsecond breaks must be ordered through Flexischools by8:30am each day. Only snacks, drinks and slushies are soldover the counter for cash (except for Prep students) during firstand second breaks.

Students who have made an order to purchase somethingfrozen, or a plain milk cup or something with custard or yoghurt,will need to come to the Tuckshop to collect the item. A greensmiley face or a red star on your bag means you must bring thebag to the Tuckshop to collect the item which can’t be sent toyour classroom.

If any students have an issue with their orders, please come tothe Tuckshop immediately so that the helpful staff can rectifythe issue.

A reminder to our Year 5 & 6 students who leave the school onFridays to participate in interschool sport, you can only order forthe first break.

Uniform Shop News

The Uniform Shop is now fully stocked with microfiber jacketsand fleece hoodys in ALL sizes.

Trackpants are now on sale! Fleecy pants all sizes are $10 each(sizes 4, 6 & 8 are sold out). Microfibre pants sizes 12, 14, 16 &18 are $15 each. Only while stocks last.

Single use plastic bags will no longer be supplied in the UniformShop for over the counter purchases in line with Queensland’stotal ban.

Donations of second hard uniform items which are in goodcondition are most welcome. A donations box has been placedoutside the door of the Uniform Shop.

There is a small supply of second hand uniform items nowavailable for purchase, prices as marked. Included in the itemsare some Prep hats if you’re looking to purchase a ‘spare’ hatfor your child.

Don’t forget we are located on Level 1 of Block A so drop byand see our friendly volunteers when the shop is open.
