DESCRIPTION

Every S-Works product is created with purity of purpose—to be the most technologically advanced, highperformance machine in the field. Our results this year alone stand as a testament to that. World Champs, National Champs, Olympic medalists; Grand Tours, Spring Classics, XC, World Cup Downhill—honestly, if we tried to fit the names of everyone who won on S-Works here, you’d need a magnifying glass to read them. There are no limits on innovation or invention when it comes to S-Works. Money is no object, no tradition too sacred to slay. Our designers and engineers are hell-bent on providing athletes with the ultimate weapon to get them over that line first. But here’s the kicker—it’s not just elite athletes who reap the rewards. With the same bikes and equipment they use available to everyone, you do too.

WORLD’S FASTEST XC BIKE

> Since its debut, the EPIC has continually proven it’s the fastest XC bike in the world. There’s a long list of racers who’ve

won championships aboard one, and factory racer Jaroslav Kulhavy has done his part in immortalizing the S-Works Epic

into the history books by capturing two huge wins for “big” wheels. It’s now the first full-suspension 29er to win an XC

World Championship, as well as Olympic XC Gold.

To carry the S-Works badge means

no expense was spared in the

pursuit of providing a competitive

performance advantage. With the

100mm-travel Epic, the advantage

starts with the frame. The lightweight

and stiff full-carbon rear-end is

exclusive to the S-Works model, and

in the process saves nearly 300g

over the M5 alloy version.

At the heart of the Epic is the world’s

most-efficient FSR suspension,

equipped with the trail-sensing

Brain. The Brain shock features

the gold Kashima coating from Fox

Shox, while the RockShox Brain fork

is equipped with a super-lightweight,

full-carbon steerer tube and

crown. The carbon-fiber treatment

continues with Roval Control SL

29 wheels, and S-Works cranks,

seatpost and handlebar—a total

weight saving of over 3.5 pounds

over the Epic Expert Carbon.

Custom, 100mm-travel RockShox SID World Cup 29 fork with Brain damping for the most efficient and supple XC fork.

Roval Control SL 29 142+ wheelset with lightweight and tubeless-ready carbon rims. The 142+ hub spacing creates a stiffer wheel, which is also easier to remove and install.

The Brain shock can uniquely differentiate between smooth and rough terrain; now featuring AUTOSAG for quick, easy, and correct suspension set up.

S-Works FACT carbon crankset is paired with Shimano XTR front derailleur for ultimate power transfer and precise shifting. (SRAM XX1 version available)

TRAIL CAPABLE, RACE READY

> Wouldn’t it be great if a bike was designed that’s equally suited for a weekend singletrack adventure as it is racing to

the podium in a World Cup XC event? Well, don’t waste money on a lottery ticket, because your lucky day has already

arrived—you can even call it FATE. As the first carbon 29er engineered specifically for women, the groundbreaking

Fate is the pinnacle of women’s XC performance. For 2013, we’ve grown the line of the best-fitting women’s 29ers to

include the trail-ready and National Champion Lea Davison-approved S-Works edition.

As a performance-oriented hardtail,

the carbon fiber S-Works Fate

frame is engineered to feature

a rigid bottom bracket area for

maximum power transfer when

sprinting, a super-low standover

height for confident handling, and

also features shaped and vertically

compliant seatstays to smooth the

rough terrain ahead. Bedazzled

with the sport’s most cutting edge

components, The S-Works Fate

stands alone atop of the line with

a custom-tuned, carbon-crowned

RockShox Brain fork with 80mm

of travel, World- Championship-

winning carbon Roval Control SL

wheelset, top-shelf Shimano XTR

brakes and drivetrain—making Fate

more tempting than ever before.

Custom, 80mm-travel RockShox SID World Cup 29 fork with Brain damping for the most efficient and supple XC fork.

Internal cable routing protects and keeps shifting performance crisp and reliable, no matter what nasty elements Mother Nature throws down.

The roomy toptube and Women’s Performance XC 29 Geometry provides a low standover height for confident handling out on the trail.

FACT IS 11m carbon frame with tapered headtube, and the shaped seatstays are torsionally stiff for snappy acceleration and vertically compliant for a smooth ride.

THE LEGENDARY TRAIL BIKE

> Not to toot our own horn, but when our full-suspension FSR bikes have won both Cross-Country and Downhill World Championships, it’s no surprise our

STUMPJUMPER FSR combines the best of both of those worlds for the most versatile trail bike on the mountain. With the title “The Legendary Trail

Bike” comes big-boy responsibility. And, year after year, the Stumpjumper FSR’s versatility is only matched by its popularity. It delivers the perfect bike

for riders wanting world-class climbing efficiency, plus dialed geometry and suspension performance for descending technical singletrack.

Our S-Works Stumpjumper FSR

is offered in a 29er version with

130mm travel. It is also the only

model in the line equipped with

the lightweight and ultra-stiff full-

carbon frame, which is over 500g

lighter than our M5 alloy version.

The S-Works treatment continues

with numerous upper-echelon

components, such as the Kashima-

coated Brain shock and Fox fork for

friction-free suspension movement,

while the super-reliable Shimano

XTR brakes and drivetrain boost the

bling factor to “11”.

The Brain shock can uniquely differentiate between smooth and rough terrain; features AUTOSAG for quick, easy and spot-on suspension set up.

Specialized Command Post BlackLite uses a remote lever to adjust the saddle height on-the-fly to maximize climbing and descending performance.

The carbon Roval Control Trail SL 29 142+ wheelset with butted DT Swiss spokes, wider rim profile and 12mm thru-axle for lightweight toughness.

Maximum traction means greater control. The FSR suspension design is independent of brake forces, therefore it’s free to compress and rebound over terrain features whether you’re braking or not; allowing the tires to maintain contact with the ground a greater percentage of the time.

SHUTTLES ARE FOR AIRPORTS

> Look closely at the all-new ENDURO. Would you believe mountain biking is, depending upon who you ask, only about 35 years old? When our fat tire

pioneers were clunking about on beach cruisers, we know in the back of their minds they envisioned riders someday cresting breathtaking back-country

peaks with a flipside of seemingly endless ripples of challenging downhill terrain. The bike they dreamed about is the Enduro—the ultimate All-Mountain

weapon. Whether underneath Matt Hunter during one of his legendary (and envy-inducing) adventures, or equipped with a number plate poised to conquer

the Megavalanche stage race, the Enduro is unmatched in All-Mountain capability.

With an all-new, carbon “X-Wing”

frame and 165mm of travel the

S-Works Enduro is designed and

engineered to be the lightest-

weight and most-efficient pedaling

All-Mountain machine we’ve ever

made—specifically refined to be

the ultimate Enduro-style race

bike. Although it’s gotten a bump

up in travel, the S-Works Enduro

drops weight and is 725g lighter

than other carbon bikes in the

line. Along with an all-new frame,

the S-Works treatment continues

with the exclusive carbon fiber

Roval Traverse SL wheelset—the

best gram-for-gram All-Mountain

hoops in the game. The Enduro is

for the rider consistently pushing

themselves to climb higher and

descend farther.

The lightweight, but tough, Roval Traverse SL carbon wheelset is tubeless ready and equipped with 2.3” Butcher and Purgatory Control tires.

The SRAM XX1 drivetrain features 1x11 gearing for a lightweight and simple configuration.

The all-new, carbon, “X-Wing” frame has 165mm of rear wheel travel.Maximum traction means greater control. The FSR suspension design is independent of brake forces, therefore it’s free to compress and rebound over terrain features whether you’re braking or not; allowing the tires to maintain contact with the ground a greater percentage of the time.

IT’S ABOUT TIME

> Downhill racing is the Formula 1 of mountain biking. It is the proving ground for innovation and new technologies, and fractions of seconds determine

DH superstars from also-rans. The riders have the rare combination of skill, wit, and self-confidence required to aggressively navigate the world’s most

dangerous terrain. However, these traits alone don’t instill assurance into the fragile mind of a racer—he must believe in his equipment. Developed with input

from Monster Energy/Specialized factory racers Sam Hill and Troy Brosnan, the World-Championship-winning DEMO is built from the ground up to be the

best-handling downhill bike in the sport. With eight inches of rear wheel travel, DH tuned FSR suspension, and a low center of gravity, the Demo delivers the

performance and peace of mind downhill racers depend on to reach their potential.

Our pursuit to provide our factory

racers with the most technologically

advanced downhill machine has

culminated in an unprecedented

race bike. The S-Works Demo

Carbon Team Replica shattered the

norm for downhill bikes, as it blends

the light weight and toughness of

carbon fiber with one-off,

custom-developed components

normally only found on dream bikes

of the world’s elite racers. The

complete S-Works Demo is 2.3

pounds lighter than the M5 alloy

model; features a FACT 11m carbon

frame, weight-saving magnesium

link, custom Cane Creek shock,

custom RockShox fork and micro

drivetrain, plus World Cup-proven

DH Race geometry—yet best of all,

for the first time it can be yours.

Goodbye zip ties. Durable metal cable guides keep lines clean on the carbon frame. The Micro Drive 7-speed, 9-20t cassette saves weight and has Downhill race-specific gearing. Narrow, 135mm rear-end spacing provides clearance through tight trail obstacles.

Cane Creek Double Barrel shock features adjustable compression, preload, and high- and low-speed rebound for fine tuning to match terrain. (Rockshox shown)

The FSR suspension’s sub-seatstay allows us to drive the shock off the chainstays, as opposed to the seatstay, which effectively lowers the center of gravity, and allows us to control the leverage ratio independently.

SMOOTHER IS FASTER

> Paris-Roubaix is the stuff of legend. Visions of steely men, caked with dust and grime, pitted against the ancient cobbles and

surviving. Of pavé so rough, so hellish, skeletons rattle and teeth practically detach from their moorings. And at the end of

it all, it’s somehow fitting the winner is presented with, well, a rock. 2012 saw Tom Boonen claim this hallowed cobble for a

record 4th time aboard his trusted S-Works ROUBAIX SL4, a bike inspired by and built for roads such as this. But saying

this bike “eats cobbles for breakfast” is only half the story.

The S-Works Roubaix eats

ANY road for breakfast—pothole

riddled, gravel sprayed, you name

it. This road warrior consistently

delivers that sharp handling, quick

acceleration and smooth ride it’s

famous for. With its size-specific

engineering— ensuring all riders get

the same ride experience regardless

of their size—the Roubaix gives the

best balance of vertical compliance,

low weight and lateral stiffness.

A nimble, high-spec steed, and now

equipped with the all-new COBL

GOBL-R seatpost, designed to

soak up more road vibrations than

ever. We know you’re probably not

going to ride Paris-Roubaix any time

soon, but we’re willing to bet you

know some roads in your neck of the

woods that are real bone-shakers.

It’s time to throw smooth in with

the rough with the 2013 S-Works

Roubaix.

The Roubaix’s size-specific, hyperbolic-shaped head tube provides the optimal balance of stiffness and compliance for greater steering precision on your ride.

The unique design of the COBL GOBL-R seatpost absorbs impacts for a smoother, more compliant ride.

Zertz viscoelastic dampers in the seatstays eliminate vibration and damp road chatter, so your body doesn’t have to.

Full internal cable routing for brake and shifter cables maintains sleek and clean lines, keeping grit and grime from affecting shifting and braking performance.

RUBY REBORN

> Some bikes have it in their DNA. That yearning for long, exploratory rides, where boundaries and abilities are tested; where long, intense climbs

are rewarded with fast, thrilling descents; and intriguing lines on the map are committed to memory. The Ruby has this DNA (and has for 5 years,)

but on the 10th anniversary of the fi rst ever Specialized women’s bike, we’ve not only given this pure-bred endurance machine a new lease on life,

we’re re-introducing the high-end S-Works RUBY to the line. The approach to this crème de-la crème edition has been simple: take the amazing,

fatigue-free ride the Ruby is known for, and infuse it with pro-level components plus the S-Works racing spirit.

From a design perspective, the

Ruby features revised women’s

geometry, refi ned engineering, and

a fi nessed aesthetic. Our engineers

explored and perfected a new triple

monocoque process; allowing them

to meet all weight, stiffness and

compliance targets, plus experiment

with the all-new integrated seat

collar. The S-Works Ruby is the

smoothest and most comfortable

ride out there, and delivers inspired

handling to all who seek to go

long. Gran Fondos, long training

rides, jaunts in the mountains with

friends—and let’s be bold, even the

Race Across America, if you’re so

inclined—these are rides tailor-made

for the confi dence-inspiring Ruby.

The all-new Integrated seat collar—a feature stemming from the new FACT TM (triple monocoque) process—creates a clean line and aesthetically concise form where the seatpost meets the frame.

Ultra-light FACT carbon monocoque fork with vibration-damping Zertz is stiff, responsive, and durable.

Zertz viscoelastic dampers in the seatstays eliminate vibration and damp road chatter so your body doesn’t have to.

Women’s contoured Body Geometry Oura Pro saddle provides optimal power transfer and all-day comfort, and is paired with the new COBL GOBL-R seatpost, which dampens road vibration.

MORE BIKE THAN AERO

> The S-Works VENGE is a bike built for true, fi nish line juggernauts. Ever since our Director of Advanced R&D, Chris D’Aluisio, had the

inspired idea to merge the trusted stiffness and responsiveness of a Tarmac with the aerodynamic qualities of a Shiv in ‘09, the Venge

has never looked back. It’s too busy winning to look back. You could call merging the properties of two bikes „Frankenstein-ing”, but

don’t forget Frankenstein was the doctor, not the monster, and in its fi rst season of racing the Venge carved through the Pro Tour with

all the precision of a surgeon. In the right hands (and with the legs of an athlete like Cavendish), the Venge is a slippery missile.

It’s a bike that lights the fuse of

many a pro rider in a sprint, and just

how it does so is due to a laundry

list of awesome. The lightweight,

FACT 11r frame is light, stiff, and

totally aero, delivering a measured

22 watts of free power at 40km/hr,

when compared to the Tarmac SL3.

Additional aero features, including

integrated top cap, bladed seatpost,

and cambered airfoil seatstays,

means riders can carve through

the air with confi dence. Sure, the

Venge may have started its life as a

“What if?” thought, but it’s certainly

evolved into a no-compromise race

machine that will see you handing

your foes their bruised egos.

The integrated top cap curves gracefully into a bevel in the top tube for a seamless interface, and turns with the steer tube for smoother airfl ow, even while steering.

The proprietary, cambered airfoil x-section seatstays feature a fl at outer surface and a smooth, rounded inner surface to calm crosswind airfl ow before it passes by the wheel.

Get the right fi t with the 3:1, bladed carbon seatpost, which is fl ippable for two setback options, and vertically adjustable (with no cutting necessary), for better fi t adjustability.

Fully UCI-legal, FACT 11r Aero Race, full-monocoque carbon frame for complete performance.

NOTHING IS LIGHTER AND STIFFER

> On the cover of “How to Deliver a Devastating Blow to the Peloton” (if such a guide exists), there’s an image of the S-Works

TARMAC SL4. It’s a two part guide: Part 1) Attack Like a Pro, and Part 2) Rehearsing Your Victory Salute. All joking aside,

the Tarmac has long been the go-to bike of the pro peloton, racking up a bevy of wins throughout its career. It’s a bike that gives

confi dence a face, as evidenced by Alberto Contador’s precise and thrilling attacks throughout the Vuelta a España this year.

Few could argue against the composure and confi dence Contador exhibited with his sudden and explosive attacks that left the

peloton wondering: is he foxing, or is he really feeling that good? That’s the confi dence a Tarmac can bring.

Its success in the Classics can be

attributed to our engineers never

losing sight of the goal: to ensure

athletes have the lightest and

stiffest bike available. This year’s

version sees the FACT IS carbon

frame deliver an increased 19%

stiffness-to-weight ratio over the

previous Tour de France-winning

SL3. Superior acceleration, effi cient

performance, sharp responsive

handling, the perfect blend of weight

and stiffness, and the power to

deliver devastating blows to other

riders—that’s what an S-Works

Tarmac can give you.

The strategically shaped head tube tapers from 1-1/8” at the top to 1-3/8” at the crown, increasing strength and stiffness for greater steering precision and responsiveness when negotiating winding roads or during out of the saddle efforts. It curves at the waist for a narrow profi le to minimize drag.

Wide-stance rear seat stays increase overall lateral stiffness of the rear triangle, delivering a more stable and confi dent ride.

The oversized, one-piece bottom bracket and chainstay optimizes weight and stiffness for superior acceleration, effi ciency and handling. Standing or seated, your power is delivered to the road.

Full internal cable routing for brake and shifter cables maintains the cleanest lines, keeping grit and grime from affecting shifting and braking performance.

determination, as Evelyn Stevens showed when storming home at La Flèche Wallonne Féminine this season—it can leave a debris

fi eld of dashed hopes in its wake. Born to race, it punches through the peloton with an air of graceful confi dence and is as adapt at

sprinting as it is at cornering. As the bike of choice for Team Specialized-lululemon, it has shown its race face in many a victory this

season, dominating the US and world stage.

It’s little wonder. Thanks to its stiff

and lightweight SL4 frame, the

Amira is quick to react and cover

a breakaway or fast acceleration,

while the tapered headtube delivers

AERO, FUEL, FIT

> In the gladiatorial battle that is triathlon, 13 seconds faster is signifi cant. Thirteen minutes on the other hand, is mind-

blowing. Naysayers may question aerodynamic claims, but this number is indisputable: The fi rst year Craig “Crowie”

Alexander rode the S-Works SHIV at Kona, he slashed 13 minutes off his bike leg. He’d be the fi rst to say that this huge

improvement—having been Mr. Consistency in past years in all three legs—is due in large part to the absolute aerodynamic

supremacy of his Shiv.

Anyone can benefi t from the

numerous advantages this tri-

weapon delivers. Crosswinds are

practically neutralized, care of the

completely non-UCI legal, 4:1 FACT

carbon frame and optimized rear

wheel airfl ow. In a nutshell, we’re

talking better airfl ow attachment

for a smaller wake and lower drag,

without sacrifi cing power. In fact, you

may feel like you’re hitting Mach 2

all the way to T2, but we fi gure

you’re OK with that. Hydration

issues are handled elegantly

with the integrated Fuelselage™

hydration system, while fi t can be

dialed to ensure athletes can hold a

comfortable position for the entirety

of the bike leg. In short, the Shiv

continues to be the perfect blend

of stealthy power, drag-defying

aerodynamics, and the perfect fi t for

triathletes of all abilities.

The multi-adjustable, aerodynamically integrated Control Tower and Specialized Aerobar system allows for a wide range of vertical and horizontal adjustment to deliver the most dialed fi t around.

The stiff, light, fully adjustable Shiv FACT aero carbon seatpost provides speed with a great fi t.

The Fuelselage™ integrated hydration system delivers improved aerodynamics and provides incredibly simple and convenient access to hydration while racing.

TT

WORLD CHAMPION SPEED

> It’s not called the ‘race of truth’ for nothing. It doesn’t matter how many hours spent in development, honing athlete

positions, refi ning aerodynamics and design, it all comes down to three simple things—body, bike, clock. Truth can

mean victory, but for us, it’s also validation. Real “Proof is in the pudding” time. Have we created the perfect 1/3 of that

equation—the best, most confi dence-inspiring Time Trial bike ever? Will our athletes pilot their S-Works SHIV TTs all

the way to the podium? For Tony Martin, the answer in 2012 was a resounding yes, as he once again stamped his foot

on the throat of the TT World Championship title.

The Shiv TT represents the

incredible talent and hard work of

our design and engineering teams.

It cheats the wind, yet breaks no

laws. In fact, the Shiv TT has nothing

but respect for the law, particularly

when it comes to aerodynamics.

The incredibly stiff, S-Works FACT

11r frame boasts a fully integrated

cockpit and aero tubeshaping, while

the S-Works FACT carbon fork

features crosswind-optimized airfoils

for precise steering and max speed.

Combine that with the aggressive

rider position and you’ve got a true

stealth monster that’s not only UCI

legal, but will have you carving

corners and slicing through the wind

with confi dence in your own race

against the clock.

The fully, UCI-legal handlebar is integrated with the new fully-adjustable Shiv TT stem, providing a stiff and light link to the fork steerer.

The FACT carbon bladed seatpost is UCI-legal and incredibly aerodynamic and stiff; two setback options for optimal fi t.

The carbon crankset with OSBB, plus removable carbon spider with TT-specifi c rings and ceramic bearings have incredible stiffness to weight for max power transfer.

3-D optimized airfoil tubing ensures the lowest drag possible from the leading to trailing edge.

REAL CYCLOCROSS BIKES. FOR RACING.

> We all know that ‘cross race conditions can be as jumbled as the letters of World Champion Zdenek Štybar’s name. Depending

on your geographic location, the course can be pockmarked with sand traps, caked with slushy snow, or just a filthy ol’ slop

intent on flinging mud in the eye of the guy behind you. The S-Works carbon CRUX is built for this. All of this. It’s a dirt devil,

frost monster, and mud lark rolled into one light and nimble frame. Its evolution has been influenced by feedback from champs

like Todd Wells and Štybar, with development carefully overseen by Ned “The Lung” Overend (a bad-ass World Champ ‘cross

racer in his own right).

Everything you see on this bike

is evidence it’s been created by

engineers who are serious about

racing ‘cross at the elite level. Its

tough yet nimble, FACT 11r carbon

frame with ‘cross race specific

geometry is light and stiff, and

features recessed bottle bosses,

flattened top tube, and a Love

Handle for easy shouldering as

you’re slogging it out. Bunny hops

seem hop-ier, run-ups, more run-

upable, and no matter how gummed

up the course gets, internal cable

routing and disc setup keeps the

CruX’s drivetrain clear and your

braking reliable. Take your racing

career to the next level in the

glorious, lung-busting, adrenaline-

surging, “hardest 60 minutes of

your week” race. Here’s mud in your

competitor’s eye!

The tapered SL4-style head tube increases stiffness for greater steering precision and nimble race handling, making it a “Tarmac for the dirt”.

Internal cable routing and BB cable guide cover keeps the grit and grime at bay in your muddiest ‘cross battle, maintaining shifting performance in the toughest of adverse conditions.

The all-new Love Handle is an indentation on the underside of the down tube—perfectly shaped for your fingers—and allows for an easier grip while racing when you go to pick up and shoulder your CruX.

Disc brake-ready frame mounts translate to greater braking power and dramatically reduced mud buildup on your built-up rig when conditions get nasty.

> If the S-Works Road Shoe has a father, it’s Rob Cook. As the Design Director for Footwear and Softgoods, he’s been knee

deep in the weeds of raising this shoe. Along with the footwear team, he’s spent two years fi ne-tuning its development and

getting it to where it is today. So imagine how he felt, tuning in to the live stream of the Tour of Qatar in February, days after

the team handed Tom Boonen a pair of white prototypes (prototypes affectionately and secretly dubbed “Angel Slippers”,

because people put them on and fl y away from the group). He blinked a few times to make sure he was seeing what he was

seeing. Yep. Tommeke was wearing the prototypes in the stage. In the race he went on to win. Rob tried to take a picture.

This feeling…was it pride? Was it shock? A bit of both, really.

This feeling Rob’s describing—the natural transfer of energy from your body through to the bike when you pedal—that’s the

power of connection. And that’s what this all-new shoe gives you.

2013 S-WORKS ROAD SHOE

THE PROCESS

The 2013 S-Works Road Shoe has been built from the ground up. After

thirty-seven prototypes, thousands of hours of development, research

and testing, we added hundreds of hours of real-world testing mapped

to different riding styles. Tom Boonen, classics and sprinting specialist

to the feisty climbing prowess and GC panache of Alberto Contador. All

had their own pair of “Angel Slippers.”

It has arrived: the fi nal, groundbreaking, S-Works Road Shoe. This

has undoubtedly been the most comprehensive process and widest

product investigation ever undertaken to develop a shoe. Over the past

two years, nothing has escaped the team’s intense scrutiny. Everything

from material properties to manufacturing techniques have been put

under the microscope.

The process has been groundbreaking; resulting in the selection

of more innovative materials that enhance fi t and power transfer,

the introduction of cutting-edge construction technologies such as

laser upper cut construction, and the incorporation of manufacturing

effi ciencies that produce a more consistent fi t.

The result? The lightest, stiffest, and most perfectly fi tting shoe we’ve

ever made. Experience the Power of Connection with the all-new

FIT IS IT

The adaptive fit and supreme comfort of the new S-Works

Road Shoe, coupled with BodyGeometry features such as

the all-new BodyGeometry footbeds, ensures the rider has

a fit that’s right for them from the get-go. A new shape with

contoured heel cup and anatomic instep sees this fit deliver

improved comfort over the previous version, plus increased

power transfer for the rider.

INNoVaTIVe MaTerIaLS

The adaptive fit of this shoe is achieved through innovative

materials that stretch and conform in specific ways around the

arch, forefoot and heel. Hours of experimentation, including

exploring new methods of cutting materials (resulting in

the thermobonded, laser cut of the upper) and refined

manufacturing techniques have raised the level of comfort

and fit of the shoe.

INTrodUCING The PoWerLINe

We’ve redesigned the carbon outsole, making it thicker where

more power is applied and thinner in low-stress areas. It’s

The all-new, proprietary BOA S2 Snap Cartridge system is

more honed than ever. It’s infinitely adjustable at a MM-by-MM

level; the tactile, squared off gripper makes it easy to use, even

with wet fingers; and it’s a service-free and replaceable system.

WorTh ITS WeIGhT IN WaTTS

When pitted against competitors’ traditional designs, athlete

testing at the Boulder Center for Sports Medicine showed

improved knee tracking and an increase in power of 2%, or 6.6

watts. Over the course of a 10KTT that’s a 7 second advantage.

It’s been a season of wins with these shoes. Tom Boonen won

the Tour of Qatar (including 2 stage wins), Paris-Roubaix, Tour

of Flanders, Gent Wevelgem, E3, plus stage wins at Paris Nice,

and the Tour de San Luis. André Greipel snagged 3 stage wins

at the Tour de France, while Alexandr Vinokourov won Gold

in the Men’s Road Race at the 2012 Olympics, and Alberto

Contador claimed victory at the Tour of Spain.

– ChrIS yU, SPeCIaLIZed aerodyNaMICIST

Drag is a serious business. Athletes know it, we know it, and the team of aerodynamic experts at McLaren defi nitely

knows it. When it came to designing a game-changing TT helmet, we once again turned to McLaren to bring their

F1-winning aerodynamic knowledge and expertise to the project. This process has yielded the stealthiest of fruit—the

drag-defying, wind-cheating S-Works + McLaren TT Helmet.

Put simply: this helmet is the fastest aerodynamic cycling helmet in the world. The result of an unprecedented

investment in wind tunnel hours, computational fl uid dynamic (CFD) modeling, and rider testing, it has taken our

ability to measure and tune aerodynamics to a new level. This is not iteration: this is a breakthrough in how we will

approach aerodynamics in the future.

Through this, our second collaboration with team at McLaren, we have adopted new and better ways of interpreting

data from the tunnels and from CFD analysis. Together, we were able to apply their world-class aerodynamic

knowledge and computational expertise to the unique needs of professional cycling, with the goal of making racers

faster by reducing one of their greatest obstacles: air itself.

The S-Works +McLaren TT Helmet can save nearly a minute over a 40km time trial or triathlon leg. Who doesn’t

> The Dissident was created with lofty goals—to make a helmet 100 grams lighter and more ventilated than the current leading model, plus exceed all of the

consumer safety standards associated with downhill bicycle helmets. From the bike park to the race course, the Dissident is designed to protect riders who

push the limits of downhill speed and big air. The carbon fiber Dissident is super-lightweight and incorporates cutting edge safety features to give riders the

While we were developing the helmet, we also wanted to make it as safe as possible for when the helmet needed to be removed by medical personnel. To

accomplish this, we developed a proprietary snap-in/slide out system to allow the cheekpads to be removed while the rider is still wearing it. Our system

works very well, and doesn’t have the weight and cost penalties of using other methods to keep pads in place. In addition to premium safety and comfort,

Scientifically developed and medically tested, our saddles are rider- and position-specific, meaning you can find a saddle that can

reduce fatigue, and deliver more power and endurance on the ride.

Specialized saddles are finding their place once again within the pro peloton, becoming the saddle of choice for many riders on some

push of a button. AUTOSAG: It’s fast. It’s easy. It’s correct—every time.

BrAIN

Specialized Brain technology knows the difference between rider

forces and bump forces. Our collaborative designs with FOX and

RockShox shocks and forks use Brain technology to immediately

transition from fi rmly effi cient in smooth terrain to fully active in

rough terrain, boosting both effi ciency and control.

> By effectively isolating chain and brake loads while climbing and descending, FSR technology delivers more comfort,

control, and effi ciency than any other suspension design. Through our nearly 20-year progression of FSR we’ve been

able to tune the ride to match the experience. The result: The same FSR technology that helps Jaroslav Kulhavy capture

Olympic XC Gold in London, Troy Brosnan uses to crush the World Cup Downhill circuit.

WHY SPECIALIZED 29ERS?

> Not all mountain bikes with 29-inch wheels are created equally. We build our 29ers to be the most confi dent

handling, fastest rolling, and most fun on the trail. This means whether you are racing to a World Championship like

Jaroslav Kulhavy or hitting the singletrack with your buddies, you get a ride that is unparalleled by any other bike.

WIDE rANGE OF FIT

29ers are not just for tall people. We’ve done the homework to ensure

our dialed geometry allow riders of all sizes to experience the benefi ts

of 29-inch wheels.

FLOAT OVEr OBSTACLES

29-inch wheels “fl oat” over rocks, roots and sand; which gives

the rider more control.

rOLL OVEr BUMPS

Thanks to a 6.1% lower angle over a 130mm bump, 29-inch wheels

don’t get hung up on roots, rocks or ruts.

BOOST CONTrOL

The way a 29er tire contacts the ground is different than another wheel

size, feeling very positive, which translates directly to increased control.

rEAL-WOrLD SPEED

Once rolling, a 29er wheel maintains momentum much better than the

standard 26-inch.

MOST-rESPONSIVE HANDLING

We keep our chainstays short on all our 29er frames, so the rear

triangle remains stiff for a responsive ride. We also use shorter, tapered

head tubes to keep the front end low for agile and controlled handling.

LIGHTEST 29ErS

Each of our 29er models is optimized for lightweight performance.

From FACT carbon fi ber frames to tubeless-ready Roval wheelsets,

we shave weight to improve the riding experience.

> What is FACT? Otherwise known as Functional Advanced Composite Technology, FACT represents our holistic

approach to working with composites. Like any project at Specialized, it’s based on the needs of the rider.

Once we determine rider needs, we apply critical disciplines to achieve design targets with our FACT bikes and

equipment. What’s the result of the FACT process? Superior carbon bikes and equipment delivering real-world

performance benefits for the rider.

FACT CARBON

FACT

CAr

BO

N

STEP 1: CONSIDEr rIDEr NEEDS

Guided by the needs of the rider experience—Competitive Road,

Endurance Road, Triathlon, or CX—we determine the best combination

of properties including stiffness, compliance, strength, and weight for

each product.

STEP 2: DESIGN & ENGINEErING

Innovation and optimization—this is where we dream up new

technologies to make each bike the best of its breed. The one-piece

BB/chainstay design, which resists deflection under pedal loads for

improved power transfer, is an example of an innovation born from this

process.

STEP 3: MATErIAL SELECTION

Before manufacturing begins, we select the specific fibers, resins, and

weaves for each bike, and determine how the carbon is wrapped or

placed on the frame. For example, we use a high mixture of E390 high

modulus carbon fiber in the down tube, bottom bracket and top tube of

the S-Works Roubaix SL4, to prevent torsional flex and deliver better

power transfer.

STEP 4: FABrICATION PrOCESSES

Next, we create the carbon layup for each bike, choose the appropriate

manufacturing method, and bake the finished frame. Using the Roubaix

as an example, the frame has seatstays constructed from E240, a

lower modulus but higher tensile strength carbon that allows the stays

to flex and absorb vibration, but remain strong over the life of the bike.

STEP 5: TESTING

Testing is a crucial part of the FACT carbon development cycle.

To be sure that our bikes live up to your (and our) expectations,

all of our bikes undergo extensive testing in the lab and on the road.

We lab-test frame prototypes at all load points, ride test them with

our pros, then make multiple iterations until we’re satisfied.

STEP 6: WIN

The results of the FACT approach speak for themselves.

Behind the scenes at Whistler’s Crankworx, Specialized engineer Jason Chamberlain delivers the prototype carbon fiber S-Works Demo 8 to the Monster Energy/Specialized Downhill team mechanic Jacy Shumilak. Later in the season Troy Brosnan races this frame to his second World Championship.

> It’s a simple concept, and one we’ve been pushing for a long time. “Smoother is Faster” originated with our FSR

suspension, but we quickly applied the same logic to the road through bikes like the Roubaix and Ruby—as well as

an ever-expanding range of equipment. After multiple victories at Paris-Roubaix on the S-Works Roubaix, pros and

pro-level athletes alike continue to validate the performance benefi ts of a smoother ride.

SIZE-SPECIFIC ENGINEErING ON THE rOUBAIX SL4

Developing specifi c frames and forks together creates the right amount

of compliance and lateral stiffness for riders of different sizes.

23/25C TIrES AND COBL GOBL-r SEATPOST

The extra volume of the 25c tires increases suppleness, and decreases

rolling resistance for a smoother ride. Adding a COBL GOBL-R post

takes the concept of “Smoother is Faster” even further and provides

unsurpassed comfort, control, and effi ciency.

PRODUCT DEvELOPMENT FLOW

> Our approach to aerodynamics is simple: innovative design, meticulous engineering, and relentless testing modeled against real world

situations. It’s a process that begins and ends with the athlete, and in between, there’s a whole lot of science going on. Whether you’re

a TT specialist, triathlete, or pro road rider, the process of developing the world’s best aerodynamic products—bikes, wheels, helmets—

is universal.

Start with the athlete. Finish with the athlete. Assume nothing, test everything. It’s a process that continues to yield results

and advance our aero program.

This consistent product development process in aerodynamics has seen the Shiv, Shiv TT and Venge reach victorious, wind-cheating

heights on the world stage, and this year we’ve added the S-Works +McLaren TT4 helmet to the fold. Its meteoric rise and total

complement to existing aero products was never more apparent than at the World Championships, with Tony Martin’s ITT victory, and

the dual victories of Omega Pharma-Quick Step and Team Specialized-lululemon in the TTT. All riding Shiv TTs and all wearing the

distinctive S-Works +McLaren TT. It just goes to show, when you have the best engines in the world, on the best bikes in the world,

with the best helmets in the world, great things happen.

AERODYNAMICS

STEP 1: STArT WITH THE ATHLETE

How will they use the product? What preconceived notions do they

have about it as it relates to aerodynamics and their performance? For

example, when it comes to a TT helmet, what shapes do they think are

faster? With science leading our development process, we KNOW

what’s faster, but with a clear understanding of their needs we can use

pure scientific data to help them be—and feel—faster.

STEP 2: DETErMINE TEST MECHANISMS

In order to replicate the conditions we want to test, we determine if

new fixtures or test methods are needed. In the case of the S-Works

+McLaren TT, we took time to develop a new mannequin for wind

tunnel testing, plus identified the capabilities of our ideal test facilities.

Ultimately, we demand consistent and repeatable conditions over the

course of testing for all our aerodynamic products.

STEP 3: DEVELOP A PrOTOTYPE STrEAM

During this phase, we determine how to implement the tests, plus

examine additional resources or tools we can utilize. These can be as

basic as how to put a helmet on a mannequin the same way every time,

to turning to the CFD experts at McLaren to refine designs using 3D

computational modeling.

STEP 4: TEST IN THE WINDTUNNEL

Bikes, helmets, wheels—they all put their noses into the wind in the

wind tunnel to test their drag properties under varying conditions.

Headwinds, crosswinds, tailwinds; during testing for the TT helmet,

60 prototypes made an appearance in our real-world simulations over

8 days. Refinements stemming from CFD were also tested during this

phase.

STEP 5: END WITH THE ATHLETE

With final prototypes and first products in hand, we bring the product

to the athlete for continuous real-world application. When you present

them with compelling data—the numbers to back up the talk, we can

help them believe in the science and adopt the product.

THE BODY GEOMETRY FIT PROCESS

Designed specifically to help cyclists ride faster, longer, in greater

comfort, and with less chance of injury, Body Geometry Fit has been

developed through years of co-operation with Dr. Andy Pruitt, Ed.D.,

PA of the Boulder Center for Sports Medicine. Fit sessions typically

last 2-3 hours and cover the following:

PrE-FIT INTErVIEW

This interview establishes your riding and injury history, and can help

anticipate flexibility issues that affect saddle position, handlebar drop

and stance width.

20-POINT FLEXIBILITY ASSESSMENT

Includes assessment of foot structure, knee position, spinal curve

and hip flexion—things that can determine your final ride position.

SIDE VIEW ANALYSIS

Used to establish a riding position that’s powerful and comfortable,

and includes adjusting seat height, handlebar height, stem length

and cleat position.

FrONT VIEW ANALYSIS

Used to optimize hip, knee and foot alignment, and includes analysis

of pedal and shoe placement.

BODY GEOMETrY CONTACT POINTS

Body Geometry is the only fit methodology supported by an entire range of equipment to complement every contact point

of the bicycle. Body Geometry shoes and high performance footbeds make the connection between body and bike more

productive and comfortable. Our Body Geometry saddles reduce pressure on arteries and soft tissue for improved blood

flow and comfort, while gloves take reduce hand numbness (aka, cycling palsy) by relieving pressure on the ulnar nerve.
