A Familiar Formula

I heard part of a sermon on the radio where the preacher was speaking on

church growth. He mentioned how some churches focus on growing its

structure; the actual church building. He then referenced a familiar formula—

length x width x height. He put a different spin on it. He said something like,

length x width without depth equals death. Death of the church.

When churches put more emphasis on constructing its edifice without more

care on building disciples those churches run the risk of spiritual death. In

Matthew 13 we are told of the sowers and their seeds. Luke 6 references what

happens when a house is not built on a solid foundation.

Our foundation is the Word of God. Our foundation is living a life that pleases

the Lord. Our foundation is being rooted and grounded in all that the Bible

teaches...even when we don’t understand it thoroughly. Our foundation goes

deeper when we study and apply; at home, at Sunday school or during the

many Bible study options we have available during the week.

Galilee, our house is our collective body. It’s not perfect, but I am of the

opinion that we are heading in the right(eous) direction. We have more than

enough opportunities for spiritual growth. Shame on any of us if we do not take

advantage of any of them! There was a time when it bothered me that we have

such great space that goes wasted during the week. No longer!

In our classes discipleship is not fostered by a teacher talking and the class

listening. Spiritual questions and life concerns are addressed and biblically

thought through. There is no way to deepen our collective Christian walk

without seeking the Word, the will and the way of the Lord for our daily lives.

We are in the process of studying the potential for the growth of our church.

The physical structure is the subject, but without us first being

rooted and grounded in the Word of God it is all for naught. If it’s

the Lord’s Will He will grow our length x width, but only while we

are growing in Him!

In total praise...I am

H e is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. When the flood came, the r iver c rashed against that house and couldn’t shake it, because it was well built. But the one who hears and does not act is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The r iver c rashed against it, and immediately i t collapsed. And the destruction of that house was great! Luke 6:48-49(HCSB)
