THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH

COMES TO BRIDGEPORT COUNTRY CLUB

On Tuesday, June 27, 44 women came to Bridgeport Country Club to enjoy a day of

circus and golf fun under the Big Top. They were greeted by the Women’s Golf

Association personal clown, Pam Payne, who started the day off in a jovial fashion.

The day began with a continental breakfast and circus games (Tightrope, Hit a golf

ball in the hole, Juggler and Lion Toss). The circus games run by Ringmaster Mary

Ann Renzelli were an opportunity for the golfers to win additional mulligans for use

during their round of golf for a $5 donation to the Humane Society. $199 was

collected for the games and was matched by V.J. to make a $400 donation to the

local Humane Society.

A golf tournament followed the circus festivities. Participants were reminded of the

circus theme while golfing with various signs on the course depicting the lion tamer,

strongman, ringmaster and a “clown” tree! Format for the day was 6, 6, 6 – 6 holes

of best ball, 6 holes of scramble and 6 holes of alternating shot, keeping the golfers

on their toes the entire day!

The team finishing first was Rita Robbins and her guests, Connie Dieriggi, Terri

Donaldson, and Janie Keeley with a net 65.2. Second place was taken by Mary Ann

Renzelli and her guests Jo Marie Pitrolo, Becky Moots and Robin Larry with a net

66. The third place team, finishing at 68.9 was comprised of members Barbara

Riggleman and Terry Braddock and their guests Woody Dennison and Barbara

Farcin. Skill awards, donated by V.J., went to Rita Robbins, member and

Roseanne Oliverio, guest for longest putt on #4 and to Wende Preaskorn, member

and Connie Dieriggi, guest for closest to the pin, second shot on #5.

After golf, the ladies enjoyed a circus luncheon prepared by Barb and the BCC

kitchen staff. Among other things the ladies enjoyed corn dogs, pork sliders, an

elephant carved watermelon fruit tray and a funnel cake dessert.

President Kathy George recognized the efforts of the following people before the

closing of the event: BCC kitchen and wait staff; pro shop staff; Mary Ann Renzelli,

theme and games; Rita Robbins, decorations; Barbara Riggleman, menu planning;

Agnes Merandi and Shirley Brown, lockeroom preparation; the Women’s Golf

Association members who brought and prepared items for the breakfast; and of

course, our clown Pam Payne. It was a fun day for everyone and the golf gods

blessed us with beautiful weather and wonderful friends to share the day!

The Women’s Golf Association played on Tuesday, June 6 with a format called pick

your poison. 2 par 5’s, 3 par 3’s and 4 par 4’s were used for the score. Cindy Davis

won for the 18-hole group and Rita Robbins won for the 9-hole group. On June 20,

the format was low putts. Rita Robbins won for the 9-hole group and Becky Fresa

won for the 18-hole group.

Tuesday golf will continue on Tuesdays in July beginning at 9:00 a.m. Please meet in

the ladies locker room by 8:30 so that groups can be set up.

The following formats will be played in July: JULY 4 – NO LADIES DAY; July 11,

the string game; July 17, Magic Number to be drawn after play to take out one hole;

and July 25, President’s Cup. We will again have the Ringer Board and the

Par/Birdie tree for you to record your good scores. The ringer board scores and

par/birdie tree can be updated any time a member plays at the club, not just on

Tuesdays.

We have been working hard on the course all

season so far and believe the weather has

been cooperative. Please check with the Pro

Shop for the rules of the course for that day,

and the status of the driving range. As

always, please use proper golf etiquette and

fix ball marks, rake the traps after you hit out

of them and replace divots if possible. Thank

you and enjoy your course.
