Discovering Love with Clarity

Lent is a good time to explore the Catholic faith.

If you are seventeen years of age or older and

are: unbaptized, baptized in another faith community, or a baptized Catholic who has never received your First Holy Communion,

then the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) is for you!

The next Inquiry Gathering will be Wednes-day, February 28, 2018 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. in the Family Life Center. You

may begin the process at any time during the year. Free babysitting is available upon

request. Bring your spouse or friend, if you’d like. These informal gatherings are structured to answer your questions about the Catholic

Church. The RCIA team is ready to walk your journey of faith with you.

Contact Lynda Knoche at 281-450-1400 or by e-mail: [email protected].

If you, your child or someone you know is between the ages of seven and sixteen, not

baptized or baptized in another faith commu-nity, we have an RCIA process suited to your

age group. Inquiry sessions are every Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. Please schedule an appointment with Paul Stoessel via phone

(281-494-1156) or e-mail ([email protected])

prior to attending your first session.

Q: What is the Book of the Elect, and how is it used?

A: The Book of the Elect is an official reg-ister that catechumens sign either at their parish during the Rite of Sending or at the cathedral in the presence of the bishop. Af-ter the godparents and assembly affirm the readiness of the candidates, the bishops in-vite the catechumens to sign their names as an official sign of their commitments to en-ter fully into the life of the Church through the sacraments of initiation. The book is often displayed in the parish as a reminder for the community to pray for the elect dur-ing their final days of preparation. Timothy A. The Usher Ministry is in need of more male and female volunteers for each of our weekend masses each week. The primary duties and responsibilities include welcoming parishioners, escorting them to

seating at select masses, taking up the collection and providing a goodbye salutation and distributing

bulletins at the conclusion of mass. This is a great opportunity to serve with very little time

commitment required. Please look for us at the Usher Ministry table after Mass this weekend in

front of the church or contact Stan Bilski at 713-503-6042 or [email protected].

From the time of Barnabas escorting Saul to the apostles (Acts 9:26-27), Christians have given witness for those seeking baptism or reception into the full communion of the Catholic Church. Today, RCIA sponsors, team and

community members give testimony concerning readiness for initiation.

Over a year ago, Mercy came to one of the RCIA Inquiry sessions seeking to understand more about the catholic faith. She was exposed to the Catholic faith via her family and, in particular, her two aunts who are nuns living in El Salvador. Mercy did not practice the faith growing up due to various reasons—many of which were out of her con-trol. At the start, we noticed she was not too comfortable with her Catholic faith. She

did not really pay much attention to it, or give importance to seeking more about God’s teachings and how loving and forgiving He is, but over the course of several ses-sions, she began to open up. As time passed, we saw Mercy getting more involved with the parish as well as in the Sunday sessions. She started to ask questions when she did not understand a passage from the readings, or just in general—anything that did not made sense to her. She also began to offer to read and would gladly express her thoughts about the top-ic we were discussing. Not only that, but she also joined the Spanish choir during the Sunday morning Mass, even though this meant that she had to give up more of her time on Sundays. Little by little we noticed Mercy being more open to learning more about her faith and a true de-sire to be embraced by God’s love. Over this year-long process we have seen tremendous growth in Mercy’s journey, and we know she is now ready to be a witness of God’s love and a defender of her faith. Her godparent, Samantha Rueda, says it has been a huge honor being part of this amazing process, and that she is more than excited to welcome Mercy into the family of St. Theresa Catholic Church. She says, “I am very grateful to God for giving me the opportunity to have this unique experience and for the pleasure of meet-ing such an extraordinary person: Mercy Galdimez.”
