We are all sinners. But Gods paence and mercy knows no bounds, and for- giveness is at hand for those who acknowledge their wrongdoing and make amends. Not so, however, for those who oppress others, or ignore the suffering of others, and don't believe they need repentance or forgiveness. Are we humbly repentant in the face of our human weakness? Are we fully open to God's grace to change us? Do we oppress or neglect people, and how can we make amends? Gospel Mt 21:28-32

Jesus said to the chief priests and the elders of the people, ‘What is your opinion? A man had two sons. He went and said to the first, “My boy, you go and work in the vineyard today.” He answered, “I will not go,” but afterwards thought better of it and went. The man then went and said the same thing to the second who answered, “Certainly, sir,” but did not go. Which of the two did the father’s will?’ ‘The first’ they said. Even after seeing that, you refused to think better of it and believe in him.’

First Reading Ez 18:25-28

and the love you have shown from of old.

Do not remember the sins of my youth.

In your love remember me,

because of your goodness, O Lord. (R.)

3. The Lord is good and upright.

He shows the path to those who stray,

he guides the humble in the right path;

he teaches his way to the poor. (R.)

26TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME —YEAR A 1ST OCTOBER 2017

Welcome everyone! Especially to the new members of our parish and to our visitors from near and far.

Grace to Change The agony of seeing innocent people killed in the worst of circumstances such as a war can be too much to bear. It is difficult to erase from one's mind the sight of injured chil-dren crying in their parents’ arms as they flee bombs and guns.

When Syrians, including children, were gassed earlier this year, one correspondent wrote: "When did we stop wanting to do good? When did dialogue give way to false flags and aggression? When did war and weapons take over our budget and our souls? When did we give up on loving the world and instead want to bomb and drone-strike the world into compliance with our interests?"

In today’s liturgy, the psalmist beseeches God to forgive our sins, to show us the way and lead us in what is right. Ezekiel proclaims that when sinners turn away from their sins and do what is right and good, they shall live. Paul in his Letter to the Philippians urges Jesus' followers to be of one mind and one love with Christ who humbled himself, even to death on a cross. “Let each of you look not to your own interests, but to the interests of others,” Paul writes.

Matthew’s gospel (21:28-32) also focuses on doing what is right. In the parable of the Two Sons, one son says he won’t help his father in the vineyard but later changes his mind and does what his father has asked, while the second son initially says he will help his father, only to disobey him later. It is the son who does his father’s will who does what is right.

Jesus underlines the importance of repentance for our sins and faith in God when he says, “Truly I tell you, the tax col-lectors and the prostitutes are going into the kingdom of God ahead of you. For John came to you in the way of righteousness and you did not believe him, but the tax col-lectors and the prostitutes believed him; and even after you saw it, you did not change your minds and believe him.”

Repentance for our sins is vital. We are all sinners. But God’s patience and mercy knows no bounds, and for-giveness is at hand for those who acknowledge their wrongdoing and make amends. Not so, however, for those who oppress others, or ignore the suffering of others, and don't believe they need repentance or forgiveness. Are we humbly repentant in the face of our human weakness? Are we fully open to God's grace to change us? Do we oppress or neglect people, and how can we make amends?

As Christians, we believe that Jesus is the Son of God and the Christ who is raised to God's right hand. We can de-pend on Jesus. Let us pray together, open our hearts to him, accept the grace to change, and help one another to do what is right and good. - Bet Green © Redemptorists
