Psalm 122 On Approaching Jerusalem 1 I was glad when they said to me, ‘Let us go to the house of the Lord.’ 2 And now our feet are standing within your gates, O Jerusalem; 3 Jerusalem, built as a city that is at unity in itself. 4 Thither the tribes go up, the tribes of the Lord, as is decreed for Israel, to give thanks to the name of the Lord. 5 For there are set the thrones of judgement, the thrones of the house of David. 6 O pray for the peace of Jerusalem: ‘May they prosper who love you. 7 ‘Peace be within your walls and tranquillity within your palaces.’ 8 For my kindred and companions’ sake, I will pray that peace be with you. 9 For the sake of the house of the Lord our God, I will seek to do you good. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

THURSDAY: AN INTRODUCTION TO JERUSALEM

Mount of Olives

At Dominus Flevit Chapel. Luke 19: 41 – 44 When Jesus came in sight of the city, he wept over it and said, "If only you had known, on this great day, the way that leads to peace! But no; it is hidden from your sight. For a time will come upon you, when your enemies will set up siege-works against you; they will encircle you and hem you in at every point; they will bring you to the ground, you and your children within your walls, and not leave you one stone standing on another, because you did not recognize God's moment when it came."

Gethsemane. Mark 14: 32—50

They went to a place called Gethsemane, and Jesus said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.” He took Peter, James and John along with him, and he began to be deeply distressed and troubled. “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death,” he said to them. “Stay here and keep watch.” Going a little farther, he fell to the ground and prayed that if possible the hour might pass from him. “Abba, Father,” he said, “everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.”

THE LORD’S PRAYER Let us pray with confidence as our Saviour has taught us Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. The priest breaks the bread Jesus, Lamb of God, have mercy on us. Jesus, bearer of our sins, have mercy on us. Jesus, redeemer of the world, give us your peace. Or O Lamb of God, come cleanse our hearts And take our sins away. O Lamb of God, your grace impart, And let our guilty fear depart, Have mercy, Lord, we pray, Have mercy, Lord, we pray. O Lamb of God, our lives restore, Our guilty souls release. Into our lives your spirit pour And let us live for evermore In perfect heavenly peace, In perfect heavenly peace.

THE EUCHARISTIC PRAYER The Lord be with you All and also with you. Lift up your hearts. All We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. All It is right to give thanks and praise. The priest praises God for his mighty acts and all respond Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed be he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Or Holy, most holy, all holy the Lord In power and wisdom for ever adored. The earth and the heavens are full of your love; Our joyful hosannas re-echo above. Blessed, most blessed, all blessed is he Whose life makes us whole, and whose death sets us free Who comes in the name of the Father of light Let endless hosannas resound in the height. The priest continues…. Great is the mystery of faith All Christ has died: Christ is risen: Christ will come again. The Prayer continues and leads into the doxology, to which all respond: All Amen.

Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Simon,” he said to Peter, “are you asleep? Could you not keep watch for one hour? Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak.” Once more he went away and prayed the same thing. When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. They did not know what to say to him. Returning the third time, he said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Enough! The hour has come. Look, the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. Rise! Let us go! Here comes my betrayer!” Just as he was speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, appeared. With him was a crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests, the teachers of the law, and the elders. Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: “The one I kiss is the man; arrest him and lead him away under guard.” Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, “Rabbi!” and kissed him. The men seized Jesus and arrested him. Then one of those standing near drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear. “Am I leading a rebellion,” said Jesus, “that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me? Every day I was with you, teaching in the temple courts, and you did not arrest me. But the Scriptures must be fulfilled.” Then everyone deserted him and fled.

READING AT BETHESDA John 5: 2 – 17

There is in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate a pool, in Hebrew called Bethesda, which has five porticoes. In these lay a multitude of invalids, blind, lame, par-alysed. One man was there who had been ill for 38 years. When Jesus saw him and knew that he had been there a long time, he said to him “Do you want to be healed?” The sick man answered him “Sir, I have no man to put me in the pool when the water is troubled, and while I am going another steps down before me. Jesus said to him “Rise, take up your bed and walk.” At once the man was healed, and he took up his bed, and walked. Now that day was the sabbath, so the Jews said to the man who was cured “It is the sabbath, it is not lawful for you to carry your bed.” But he answered them “the man who healed me said to me “take up your bed and walk”.

This was why the Jews persecuted Jesus, because he did this on the sabbath.

Prayer for the sick Let us name before the Lord all whom we know to be in need of his healing.

Loving Father, giver of life and health: comfort and restore those who are sick, that they may be strengthened in their weekness, and have confidence in your unfailing love; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE EUCHARIST AT ECCE HOMO

Collect Almighty God, who in the passion of your blessed Son made an instrument of painful death to be for us the means of life and peace: grant us so to glory in the cross of Christ that we may gladly suffer for his sake; who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

First Reading Philippians 2: 6—11

Christ Jesus, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited, but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness. And being found in human form, he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death – even death on a cross. Therefore God also highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Gospel Reading John 3: 13-17 Jesus said to Nicodemus: ‘No one has ascended into heaven except the one who descended from heaven, the Son of Man. And just as Moses lifted up the ser-pent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever be-lieves in him may have eternal life. ‘For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life. ‘Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.’ Post Communion Prayer Faithful God, whose Son bore our sins in his body on the tree, and gave us this sacrament to show forth his death until he comes: Give us grace to glory in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, For he is our salvation, our life and our hope, Who reigns as Lord, now and for ever. Amen.

21

The Collect (Opening Prayer) is said, and all respond Amen. LITURGY OF THE WORD At the end of each reading: This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. GOSPEL READING The Lord be with you and also with you.

When the Gospel is announced:

Glory to you, O Lord.

At the end This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. A SHORT ADDRESS MAY BE GIVEN. PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION LITURGY OF THE EUCHARIST The Peace The peace of the Lord be always with you and also with you. Let us offer one another a sign of peace. Offertory Prayers may include: Blessed are you Lord……. All: Blessed be God for ever.

Words of introduction may be said, and an invitation to confession Almighty God, our heavenly Father, we have sinned against you and against our neighbour, in thought and word and deed, through negligence, through weakness, through our own deliberate fault. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, who died for us, forgive us all that is past, and grant that we may serve you in newness of life to the glory of your name. Amen. Or, with suitable penitential sentences, the Kyrie Eleison may be used Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Christ , have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. The priest says the absolution Gloria in Excelsis may be used All Glory to God in the highest, and peace to his people on earth. Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer. PRAYERS AT THE BEGINNING OF THE VIA DOLOROSA

Matthew 27:27—31 Then the governor’s soldiers took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the whole company of soldiers round him. They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him, and then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on his head. They put a staff in his right hand and knelt in front of him and mocked him. “Hail, king of the Jews!” they said. They spat on him, and took the staff and struck him on the head again and again. After they had mocked him, they took off the robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him away to crucify him. Almighty God, whose most dear Son went not up to joy but first he suffered pain, and entered not into glory before he was crucified: mercifully grant that we, walking in the way of the cross, may find it none other than the way of life and peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. We adore you O Christ, and we bless you Because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. We will pause at each of the Stations of the cross, where the response is repeat-ed, there may be a few words, and we sing the taize chant Jesus, remember me, when you come into your kingdom Or Kyrie Eleison, Kyrie Eleison, Kyrie Eleison. Christe Eleison, Christe Eleison, Christe Eleison. Kyrie Eleison, Kyrie Eleison, Kyrie Eleison. Or Jesus, we love you, we worship and adore you Glorify your name in all the world; Glorify your name, Glorify your name, Glorify your name in all the world.

FRIDAY: MOUNT ZION & BETHANY

ST PETER IN GALLICANTU Mark 14: 66 – 72

As Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the maids of the high priest came, and seeing Peter warming himself, said “You also were with the Naza-rene, Jesus. But he denied it, saying “I neither know, nor understand what you mean. And he went out into the gateway, and the cock crowed. And the maid saw him, and began to say to the by standers, “This man is one of them.” But again he denied it. And after a little while again the bystanders said to Peter, “certainly you are one of them, for you are a Galilean.” And he began to invoke a curse on him-self and to swear, “I do not know this man of whom you speak.” And imme-diately the cock crowed a second time. Peter remembered how Jesus had said to him “before the cock crows twice, you will deny me three times. And he broke down, and wept. John 21: 15-19

15When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, ‘Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?’ He said to him, ‘Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Feed my lambs.’ 16A second time he said to him, ‘Simon son of John, do you love me?’ He said to him, ‘Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Tend my sheep.’ 17He said to him the third time, ‘Simon son of John, do you love me?’ Peter felt hurt because he said to him the third time, ‘Do you love me?’ And he said to him, ‘Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Feed my sheep. 18Very truly, I tell you, when you were younger, you used to fasten your own belt and go wherever you wished. But when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will fasten a belt around you and take you where you do not wish to go.’ 19He said this to indicate the kind of death by which he would glorify God. After this he said to him, ‘Follow me.’

Jesus said, “Make the people sit down.” There was plenty of grass in that place, and the men sat down, about five thousand of them. Jesus then took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed to those who were seated as much as they wanted. He did the same with the fish. When they had all had enough to eat, he said to his disciples, “Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted.” So they gathered them and filled twelve baskets with the pieces of the five barley loaves left over by those who had eaten. After the people saw the miraculous sign that Jesus did, they began to say, “Surely this is the Prophet who is to come into the world.” Jesus, knowing that they intended to come and make him king by force, withdrew again to a mountain by himself. OFFERTORY HYMN Gather around, for the table is spread, Welcome the food and rest! Wide is the circle, with Christ at the head, He is the honoured guest. Learn of his love, grow in his grace, Pray for the peace he gives; Here at this meal, here in this place, k now that his Spirit lives! Once he was known in the breaking of bread Shared with a chosen few; Multitudes gathered and by him were fed, So will he feed us too. AFTER THE EUCHARISTIC PRAYER Be still for the presence of the Lord, the Holy One is here. Come, bow before him now, with reverence and fear. In him no sin is found, we stand on holy ground. Be still, for the presence of the Lord, the Holy One, is here.

woman named Martha opened her home to him. She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!” “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.” Reading at the Tomb of Lazarus John 11: 32—44 When Mary reached the place where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet and said, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.” When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come along with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in spirit and troubled. “Where have you laid him?” he asked. “Come and see, Lord,” they replied. Jesus wept. Then the Jews said “See how he loved him” But some of them said, “Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man have kept this man from dying?” Jesus, once more deeply moved, came to the tomb. It was a cave with a stone laid across the entrance. “Take away the stone,” he said. “But, Lord,” said Martha, “by this time there is a smell, for he has been there four days.” Then Jesus said, “Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?” So they took away the stone. Then Jesus looked up and said, “Father, I thank you that you have heard me. I knew that you always hear me, but I said this for the benefit of the people standing here, that they may believe that you sent me.” When he had said this, Jesus called in a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen, and a cloth around his face. Jesus said to them, “Take off the grave clothes and let him go.”

SATURDAY: BETHLEHEM

EUCHARIST AT THE SHEPHERD’S FIELDS

Opening Prayer Eternal God, who made that most holy Christmas night to shine with the brightness of your one true light: bring us, who have known the revelation of that light on earth, to see the radiance of your heavenly glory; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen

First Reading Isaiah 9.2-7 The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned. You have enlarged the nationand increased their joy; they rejoice before you as people rejoice at the harvest, as men rejoice when dividing the plunder. For as in the day of Midian’s defeat, you have shatteredthe yoke that burdens them, the bar across their shoulders, the rod of their oppressor. Every warrior’s boot used in battle and every garment rolled in blood will be destined for burning, will be fuel for the fire. For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and for ever. The zeal of the LORD Almighty will accomplish this.

Hymn Page 10 While Shepherd’s watched

around him (for he had taken it off) and jumped into the water. The other disciples followed in the boat, towing the net full of fish, for they were not far from shore, about a hundred yards. When they landed, they saw a fire of burning coals there with fish on it, and some bread. Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish you have just caught.” Simon Peter climbed aboard and dragged the net ashore. It was full of large fish, 153, but even with so many the net was not torn. Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.” None of the disciples dared ask him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord. Jesus came, took the bread and gave it to them, and did the same with the fish. This was now the third time Jesus ap-peared to his disciples after he was raised from the dead.

THE EUCHARIST AT TABGHA Opening Prayer Almighty God, whose Son Jesus Christ accepted the offering of a small boy and fed the multitude, Grant that we may offer in faith the gifts we have, trusting that you will bless our offering and multiply your grace within us. We make our prayer through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Gospel Reading John 6: 5-14

Jesus crossed to the far shore of the Sea of Galilee (that is, the Sea of Tiberi-as), and a great crowd of people followed him because they saw the miracu-lous signs he had performed on the sick. Then Jesus went up on a mountain-side and sat down with his disciples. The Jewish Passover Feast was near. When Jesus looked up and saw a great crowd coming towards him, he said to Philip, “Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?” He asked this only to test him, for he already had in mind what he was going to do. Philip answered him, “Eight months’ wages would not buy enough bread for each one to have a bite!” Another of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, spoke up, “Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among so many?”

of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood have eternal life, and I will raise them up on the last day; for my flesh is true food and my blood is true drink. Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood abide in me, and I in them. Just as the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so whoever eats me will live because of me. This is the bread that came down from heaven, not like that which your ancestors ate, and they died. But the one who eats this bread will live for ever.’ He said these things while he was teaching in the synagogue at Caperna-um. Reading on the Mount of Beatitudes Matthew 5: 1-10 When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after he sat down, his disciples came to him. Then he began to speak, and taught them, saying: ‘Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteous-ness, for they will be filled. Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mer-cy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. Blessed are the peace-makers, for they will be called children of God. Blessed are those who are per-secuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.’ Reading at Mensa Christi John 21: 1-19

Jesus appeared again to his disciples, by the Sea of Tiberias. It happened this way: Simon Peter, Thomas (called Didymus), Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two other disciples were together. “I’m going out to fish,” Simon Peter told them, and they said, “We’ll go with you.” So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing. Early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not realise that it was Jesus. He called out to them, “Friends, haven’t you any fish?” “No,” they answered. He said, “Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.” When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large num-ber of fish. Then the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” As soon as Simon Peter heard him say, “It is the Lord,” he wrapped his outer garment

Gospel Luke 2.1-20 In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. (This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.) And everyone went to his own town to register. So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethle-hem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. There were shepherds living out in the fields near by, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Saviour has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest,, and on earth peace to men on whom his favour rests.” When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let's go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.” So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.

Offertory Hymn: Page 9 O little Town of Bethlehem

Post Communion Prayer God our Father, in this place you have made known to us again the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ: confirm our faith and fix our eyes on him until the day dawns and Christ the Morning Star rises in our hearts. To him be glory both now and for ever.

SUNDAY

There will be an opportunity, early in the morning, to visit the Church of the Holy Sepulchre to witness the variety of liturgies taking place. This is strongly recommended, as this is your opportunity to see this church as a place of worship, to enjoy it when it is much quieter, and and to experience liturgical traditions which may be new to us. In my experience, those who get up early to experience this are always glad they have done so!

JERICHO

Reading at the Mount of Temptation Matthew 4: 1-11

Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil. After fasting for forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.” Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” Then the devil took him to the holy city and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down. For it is written: “‘He will command his angels concerning you, and they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’” Jesus answered him, “It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’” Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendour. “All this I will give you,” he said, “if you will bow down and worship me.” Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’” Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him.

We sing the Hymn

Be thou my guardian and my guide, and hear me when I call; let not my slippery footsteps slide, and hold me lest I fall.

The world, the flesh, and Satan dwell around the path I tread; O save me from the snares of hell, thou quickener of the dead.

AT CANA

Reading John 2: 1-11

On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more wine.” “Dear woman, why do you involve me?” Jesus replied. “My time has not yet come.” His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial wash-ing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons. Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water”; so they filled them to the brim. Then he told them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.” They did so, and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realise where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside and said, “Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.” This, the first of his miraculous signs, Jesus performed at Cana in Galilee. He thus revealed his glory, and his disciples put their faith in him. Reflection

Tuesday: The Lakeside Ministry

Reading in the Synagogue at Capernaum John 6: 51—59 Jesus said: ‘I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats of this bread will live for ever; and the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.’ The Jews then disputed among themselves, saying, ‘How can this man give us his flesh to eat?’ So Jesus said to them, ‘Very truly, I tell you, unless you eat the flesh

Before we taste of death, we see thy kingdom come; we fain would hold the vision bright, and make this hill our home.

’Tis good, Lord, to be here! yet we may not remain;

but since thou bidst us leave the mount come with us to the plain.

AT NAZARETH Reading Luke 1: 26-38 In the sixth month, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Gali-lee, to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favoured! The Lord is with you.” Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, you have found favour with God. You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob for ever; his kingdom will never end.” “How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?” The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be barren is in her sixth month. For nothing is impossible with God.” “I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May it be to me as you have said.” Then the angel left her. Prayer: We beseech you, O Lord, pour your grace into our hearts, that as we have known the incarnation of your Son Jesus Christ by the mes-sage of an angel, so by his cross and passion we may be brought to the glory of his resurrection; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen

And if I tempted am to sin, and outward things are strong,

do thou, O Lord, keep watch within, and save my soul from wrong.

Still let me ever watch and pray, and feel that I am frail, that if the tempter cross my way, yet he may not prevail.

RENEWAL OF BAPTISM PROMISES AT THE RIVER JORDAN

Reading: Matthew 3: 13—17 Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptised by John. But John tried to deter him, saying, “I need to be baptised by you, and do you come to me?” Jesus replied, “Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfil all righteousness.” Then John consented. As soon as Jesus was baptised, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting on him. And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.” RENEWAL OF BAPTISMAL PROMISES As we gather at the River Jordan, near to the place where Jesus was bap-tized, we remember that in the waters of Baptism we have died and been buried with him , so that we may rise with him to new life within the family of his Church, and to eternal life in heaven. With faith in the Lord’s promises we renew the promises made at our bap-tism, affirming our allegiance to Christ, and our rejection of all that is evil. Therefore I as these questions:

Do you reject the devil and all rebellion against God? I reject them.

Do you renounce the deceit and corruption of evil? I renounce them.

Do you repent of the sins that separate us from God and neighbour? I repent of them.

Do you turn to Christ as Saviour? I turn to Christ.

Do you submit to Christ as Lord? I submit to Christ.

Do you come to Christ, the way, the truth and the life? I come to Christ.

May God who has given you the desire to follow Christ give you strength to continue in the Way. Amen.

Everyone is now invited to trace the sign of the cross on their forehead, using water from the river, reminding us of our own baptism.

Hymn Baptised in water, sealed by the Spirit, cleansed by the blood of Christ our king; heirs of salvation, trusting his promise—faithfully now God's praise we sing. Baptised in water, sealed by the Spirit, dead in the tomb with Christ our king; one with his rising, freed and forgiven. thankfully now God's praise we sing. Baptised in water, sealed by the Spirit, marked with the sign of Christ our king; born of one Father, we are his children—joyfully now God's praise we sing.

Reading Luke 9.28-36 28 Jesus took with him Peter and John and James, and went up on the moun-tain to pray. 29 And while he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became dazzling white. 30 Suddenly they saw two men, Moses and Elijah, talking to him. 31 They appeared in glory and were speaking of his departure, which he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem. 32 Now Peter and his companions were weighed down with sleep; but since they had stayed awake, they saw his glory and the two men who stood with him. 33 Just as they were leaving him, Peter said to Jesus, ‘Master, it is good for us to be here; let us make three dwellings, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.’ Peter did not know what he said. 34While he was saying this, a cloud came and over-shadowed them; and they were terrified as they entered the cloud. 35Then from the cloud came a voice that said, ‘This is my Son, my Chosen; listen to him!’ 36When the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. And they kept si-lent and in those days told no one any of the things they had seen. Father in heaven, whose Son Jesus Christ was wonderfully transfigured before chosen witnesses upon the holy mountain, and spoke of the exodus he would accomplish at Jerusalem: give us strength so to hear his voice and bear our cross that in the world to come we may see him as he is; who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. All Amen.

’Tis good, Lord, to be here!Thy glory fills the night; thy face and garments, like the sun, shine with unborrowed light.

’Tis good, Lord, to be here, thy beauty to behold,

where Moses and Elijah stand, thy messengers of old.

Fulfiller of the past! promise of things to be! We hail thy body glorified, and our redemption see.
