Visitors
Welcome to historic St. Rose of Lima Catholic
Church! Built over a century ago, we all owe a debt of
gratitude to the Irish faithful who were the first to call
this church their parish. For apart from the countless
sacrifices made by that first generation of faithful to
build a suitable house of prayer and divine worship for
the greater glory of God, this beautiful church would
not exist.
Many of the beautiful stained glass windows, perhaps
the most stunning feature of the church, have been
newly restored. Rendered in the Munich Pictorial
style, they depict scenes from the life of Christ as well
as images of various angels and saints. By the end of
this year, we hope to complete this restoration project.
The careful observer will discern elements from the
Gothic, Romanesque, and Byzantine styles which
together make up the style known as Venetian Gothic.
When the church was entrusted to the care of the
priests of the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter in 2008,
the sanctuary was renovated and restored for the
celebration of the usus antiquior (more ancient usage)
of the Roman rite. Bishop Paprocki consecrated the
new main and side altars in 2012 and established the
church as a personal parish on New Years Day, 2014.
After both Sunday Masses, visitors are invited to meet
and greet some of our parishioners in the parish hall
and socialize over coffee and donuts. If interested in
joining the parish, simply call the office.

From the Pastor’s Desk Third Sunday of Advent The Christmas Creche
The Child in the manger and various other representations
of the story of Bethlehem have been used in the Catholic
church since the first centuries. The earliest‑known picture
is a Nativity scene of the end of the 4th century (about A.D.
380) that served as a wall decoration in the burial chamber
of a Christian family in St. Sebastian's Catacombs, in Rome.
These days, we call it the Christmas Crib. The word crib
comes from an old English word cribb (2 bs) itself derived
from the west Germanic word *kribjon (manger). When we
want to be fancy we call the Christmas crib a crèche, from
the French, a word which comes from a franquish word
*kripja (manger) and ultimately from the same west
Germanic word. So wether we use crib, crèche or manger
(another French word...), we refer to the fact mentioned in
the story of the Nativity of the Gospel according to St. Luke
that the newly born Jesus was placed in a manger.
The crib in its present form and use is credited to Saint
Francis of Assisi. He made the Christmas crib popular
through his famous celebration at Greccio, Italy, on
Christmas Eve 1223 almost 8 centuries ago, with a
Bethlehem scene including live animals. His biographer,
Thomas de Celano gave us a lively description of the event.
“It should be recorded and held in reverent memory
what Blessed Francis did near the town of Greccio, on the
feast day of the Nativity of our Lord Jesus Christ, three
years before his glorious death. In that town lived a certain
man by the name of John (Messer Giovanni Velitta). (...)
“Blessed Francis often saw this man. He now called him
about two weeks before Christmas and said to him: "If you
desire that we should celebrate this year's Christmas
together at Greccio, go quickly and prepare what I tell you;
for I want to enact the memory of the Infant who was born
at Bethlehem, and how He was deprived of all the comforts
babies enjoy; how He was bedded in the manger on
hay, between an ass and an ox. For once I want to see all
this with my own eyes." (...)
“The Saint of God arrived, found everything prepared,
saw it and rejoiced. The crib was made ready, hay was
brought, the ox and ass were led to the spot. Greccio became
a new Bethlehem. The night was made radiant like the day,
filling men and animals with joy. The crowds drew near and
rejoiced in the novelty of the celebration. Their voices
resounded from the woods, and the rocky cliff echoed the
jubilant outburst. As they sang in praise of God the whole
night rang with exultation. The Saint of God stood before
the crib, overcome with devotion and wondrous joy.”
There is no mention of an ass and an ox in the Gospel.
However, St. Francis was following an ancient tradition.
They appear as early as the fourth century in pictures of the
Nativity. The custom originated because of two passages in
the Old Testament that were applied to the birth of Christ:
the words of Isaiah (1:3), "The ox knows his owner, and the
ass his master's crib; but Israel hath not known me and my
people hath not understood"; and the verse of Habakkuk
(3:2) in an early Latin version, "In the midst of two animals
Thou shalt become known."
