Dear Parishioners, Last Sunday on the Solemnity of Jesus Christ the King of the Universe, I blessed and inaugurated the new processional cross for our parish. After purchasing the new candle stands that grace our sanctuary, I felt it was important to have a processional cross that complimented their style and design. At the same time, I have always maintained that a processional cross should somehow be reflective of a particular worshipping community, since it is this cross that serves as the standard that calls our Eucharistic assemblies to order each Sunday. And so began the search to design the most fitting cross for St. Joan of Arc Parish. My wonderful secretary, Mary Beth Kerner, discovered a
crucifix from the 15th century that St. Joan of Arc herself prayed before during her lifetime. It is called the Septfounds Crucifix because it was located in a hermitage in a French town of this name. The crucifix is now preserved in a French museum. Because of its connection to the historical figure of Joan of Arc, it could well be considered a second class relic, that is, some material object that had been in physical contact with a saint. (A first class relic would be part of the saint’s body.) I brought to our Parish Commission on Divine Worship the idea that we replicate this Septfounds Crucifix as our processional cross, given that our parish patron is St. Joan of Arc. The commission members unanimously approved this idea. The liturgical design company that manufactured our candlestands assured me that they could replicate this art object for our purpose. And finally, our parish chapter of the Knights of Columbus generously agreed to purchase this sacred appointment for our church. The entire project lasted almost one and a half years.
Just before its completion, however, the artist contacted me and inquired as to whether we wanted the corpus of Christ repaired because the left hand is missing and there is a large split in the wood of the torso. We had discussed this at the Worship Commission and agreed to keep the figure of the crucified Christ as it currently is, even though these “defects” may not have existed at the time of St. Joan. The crack in the figure of Jesus is a powerful reminder of the brokenness that still exists in the Body of Christ, the Church. We are still on this side of Heaven, and there is
still suffering within the members of Christ’s Body that we need to heal. Thus, the missing hand on the figure is an invitation for us to become the hand of Christ that heals the wounds of sin and division in our world today. Our parish processional cross, therefore, is more than an artistic object that adorns our place of worship. It is a sign that binds us to our patron, a proclamation about the Body of Christ that is still in need of healing, and the supreme challenge for us to make that healing happen. I am exceedingly grateful to our Knights of Columbus for making the acquisition of this rich symbol possible for us. May it be a source of inspiration for us, and a perpetual reminder of God’s unconditional love revealed in Christ crucified.
Blessings,

As part of the Rite, they each received a cross to sup-port them in their journey toward Easter and the cele-bration of the Sacraments of Initiation. Please wel-come them and pray that their faith in God will con-tinue to grow. Happy New Year Today we begin a new liturgical year as we start the Season of Advent. The Church gives us this season as a time of preparation, as a time of hopeful anticipation, as we prepare our hearts and minds for the celebra-
tion of Christmas. We listen to Scripture stories of the central figures of Advent – Isaiah, John the Baptist, Mary – as they all remind us to prepare the way of the Lord. This weekend, we change the setting of the Mass Ordi-nary that we are using (Holy, Memorial Acclamation, Amen, Lamb of God) to indicate a new season in the liturgical year. During this Season of Advent, we will use ‘Mass of Light’ – quit appropriate, since we sing of Christ as our light during this time of waiting and prepa-ration. Our music during Advent contains some of the most beautiful and poetic images, especially fitting for this time of the year:
‘Creator of the stars of night, Your people’s everlasting light, O Christ, Redeemer of us all,
We pray you hear us when we call.’ (Traditional Latin Chant – 9th Century)
As we begin this holy season, let us remember that God will always hear us when we call, as we sing in the chant ‘Creator of the Stars of Night’. Happy New Year! Jim Susic

CLOUD OF WITNESSES The Saints Renew the Church
St. Juan Diego and the apparitions of Our Lady of Guadalupe will be discussed at the next Cloud of Witnesses event. These apparitions led to the second largest conversion to Catholicism since the early days of the Church. The miraculous image of Our Lady of Guadalupe defies all scientific explanation and the Basilica of Guadalupe receives more pilgrims than any other shrine in the world.
“Let not your heart be disturbed. . . Am I not here, who am your Mother? Are you not under my protection?”

Thank you to everyone who helped with this year’s Harvest Sunday food drive on November 19th. Through the work of so many volunteers, the parish was able to help provide two weeks worth of food to 63 families in the area. Also, much of the food that was donated will help stock the Lisle Township food pantry, Downers Grove Fish food pantry, West Suburban Community Pantry and the food pantry at People’s Resource Center in Wheaton. A big thank you to the Saul family who coordinates the sorting of food in the gym every year. Thank you to all the families and the scouts who distributed door tags to houses in the area, and also to the volunteers who delivered food to the disabled and homebound. Lastly, a thank you goes out to all the parishioners who donated food for Harvest Sunday. Your generous donations pro-vided food for so many families in our area. Please pray for the families who need to use the food pantries and for all fami-lies in need. Offer up your Masses, Holy Hours, rosaries, and any other pious acts for those families, especially the families in our own parish who are in need. Let us give thanks to God for the opportunity to serve and that these families will know the love God has for them. Know that our service impacts so many and that those families are truly appreciative of all the work St. Joan of Arc does. Thank you again to everyone. Sincerely in Christ, Vicente Fernandez St. Joan of Arc Peace and Social Justice Coordinator
