OUR LADY OF WALSINGHAM Walsingham Shrine, founded almost 1000 years ago, is one of the oldest
shrines dedicated to Mary. In pre-Reformation times, it ranked with Jerusalem, Rome and Compostela as the most visited sites in Christendom,
until it was destroyed in the 16th century. The first documented dedication of England to Our Lady was made by King Richard II in Westminster Abbey in 1381 as he sought her protection in the face of great political turmoil. In
March 2020, a rededication took place throughout the country, in cathedrals, churches, and other venues. This rededication is both a personal promise of the people of the country, and a renewal of the entrustment vows made by
King Richard II in 1381. Let’s take our Lady's message to heart to 'Share my Joy in the Annunciation'."

We are at the foot of the Cross with Mary Newly Baptized

Severance
Comic Corner
Beginning on October 1st, Daily Mass Times
Beginning October 1, 2020 all weekday 8:15am Mass will be switched back to three Church Cam-puses. [Tuesdays & Fridays at St. Andrew, Wednes-days at St. Mary and Thursdays at Holy Family]. Weekend Masses will remain the same, but in order to accommodate parents with religious education students, those who attend the 10am Mass may want to consider attending the other time. Adoration and Confession will continue the same way until further notice.
On September 14, we celebrated the feast of the Exaltation of the Cross – the Cross, for us Christians, still remains the univer-sal image of veneration, an instrument of our salvation. It was not so for the early Christians – Cross was folly for the world, but it was the “power of God, it was wisdom of God '' for those who are saved. Paul said, “For Jews demand signs and Greeks seek wisdom, but we preach Christi crucified” (1 Cor 18, 22ff).
On September 15, we celebrated the heart of a woman who stood at the foot of the Cross – the Memorial feast of Our Lady of Sorrows. The Scriptural passages for this feast are: Luke 2:35 and John 19:26-27. Both these options are given for the Gospel text. Jesus died on the cross along with two criminals. In the shadow of the cross, we find Mary and John. No other woman was ever nearly as sorrowful as the blessed Mother. When Jesus was a little baby, the words she heard from Simeon came true, “a sword will pierce through your own soul also, that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed” (Lk 2:35). Many of us still have problems understanding Jesus’ death on the cross and how he died for the whole human race and for “me” also. The key to unlock this mystery is found in our own predicament – suffering and death. Paul answers, “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Rom 6:23). In this stark reality about ourselves, someone pure and spotless must die and liberate us from the sting of death (1 Cor 15:56) through it’s glorified body! This is the rea-son for the death of Christ on the cross – salvation and God’s grace in abundance!
Mary could have thwarted the entire plan of salvation even with-in her maternal role and rights. One word from her mouth could have put everything upside down. Mary evangelized the world by her silence and sobriety at the foot of the cross so that the message of the cross may awaken the world to God’s mer-cy. Mary’s second fiat at the foot of the cross was to conceive us in John, to be her children. It is at that moment of the cross, we became her children – as brothers and sisters, coheirs to the heavenly riches because she was the Mother of God. If the wis-dom of God should be revealed, we must let our own wisdom subside. Mary knew that this altar, the cross, needed a spotless victim, a blameless victim, a pure victim and a holy victim. You and I cannot die on the cross and win the salvation of the world. The only innocent person in the entire human race is Jesus Christ. Innocence is not simply guiltless which presupposes a crime. Innocence simply means “sinless.” God himself became the holy victim on this altar, because humanity can never offer this victim for the burden of sin. The weight of sin, the over-powering of sin and affliction of sin, is not merely our predica-ment, for we are by nature children of wrath like the rest of hu-mankind (Eph 2:3-5).
Mary shows us that we can complete in ourselves what is lack-ing in the sufferings of Christ, for the sake of his body which is the Church (Col 1: 24). May we consider our sufferings as a ho-ly opportunity to participate in the cross, on which hung the sal-vation of the world! Fr. Sengole T. Gnanaraj

In Loving Memory in the Bulletin
