PSALTER WEEK II I JULY 12, 2015

From Our Pastor, Fr. Fausto ...

My Dear Friends, We are in the middle of the traditional vacation

period: enjoy your well-deserved rest if you can find the time (…and the money) to enjoy it! Please remember the three capital rules of vacation: 1.If you drink, let someone else drive. 2.Attend Mass on weekends. If sometimes you miss it

because there is no church where your hotel (or campground) is located, do not have a panic attack: recite the rosary or read a biblical chapter that day, so to praise the Lord always on His Holy Day. 3.Whenever you put your key into the ignition to start

your vehicle, say a prayer with the other passenger(s), asking your Guardian Angel, the Blessed Mother, St. Christopher, or your patron Saint to join their prayers to yours, so that God will protect you and your dear ones from all harm during your trip. By the way, I also pray to God thru the Blessed Mother’s intercessions for the poor souls of Purgatory whenever I drive near a cemetery. I am sure that when they reach Heaven they will intercede to God on my behalf. Today’s Gospel is the basis on which the Monastic Life in the Church found its ideal. Living together (two by two…) in convents and monasteries, shunning marriage for the sake of the Kingdom (vow of chastity), carrying very little of the goods and possessions of this world (vow of poverty), obeying the Lord Jesus in the person of the superiors (vow of obedience). As Jesus remarked once, not everybody is called to this way of life. From the XII century, a simplified vow of chastity, called celibacy, was also imposed on and followed by the diocesan priests of all Latin rites (Roman, Ambrosian, Gallican and Mozarabic). Only the Catholic priests of Eastern Rites continued to be married up to today. So it is not correct to say that “Catholic priests don’t marry;” it is precise to say, “many Catholic priests don’t marry”. In this day and age, good men and women are still choosing religious life. Unfortunately, the media never puts this in headlines. These men and women represent a wide range of backgrounds, ages and experiences. Are they perfect people from perfect homes? NO! But they are wholesome, creative persons who feel inspired by God to serve His people in a unique way.

Truly, at this time in history, the Church needs to strengthen its priestly and religious ranks with happy, healthy persons who have the desire to make a difference in the Church, and in the world, which is today filled mainly with struggle and confusion. All religious communities are looking for persons to whom God is significant in their lives, persons who can offer a compassionate service to others. The Church needs men and women who have leadership skills and can work well with a variety of people. No one is born a priest, brother, or sister. Vocations are God-inspired and home made.

In looking at Jesus in His time, we notice that He was never half-hearted in His way of calling forth His

disciples. His great desire was to bring God’s healing presence and reign in the world. Thus, Jesus looked potential followers right in the eye and invited them to join Him. Even today, Jesus has a mission to fulfill and a message to share. Challenges from the left or right would not stop Him, or us, His loving followers. Jesus’ call for disciples and co-workers must go out today as boldly as ever. His message and mission are still dynamic and must be shared. To be a brother, priest or sister is a way of responding dramatically to that call. It is not the only type of response, but a highly significant one. Those who open themselves in faith to the power of the Spirit in their lives, and choose to answer “YES” to the Lord’s invitation: “FOLLOW ME,” are surely helping to bring about a new dawn in the Church. The object is not to push more people into the priesthood and religious life. It is not a numbers game. Rather, it is to call forth those among us who have what it takes to live and serve in this way. As we continue to shape the Church of the future, we need generous and creative ministers among us. Consider it! This could be you or someone you know.

By the way, sometimes we wonder how the Bishops have ordained certain unworthy men to the Holy Orders; but priests and deacons are chosen from among us, and we are all sinners! Just compare the twelve handpicked apostles by Jesus: What a motley crew! No Bishop today would have ordained or even considered guys like these! In all four lists of the Twelve Apostles, Simon, to whom Jesus gave the name Peter (from the Greek Petros = Rock), is always the number one, the first pope, BUT the one who denied he even knew Jesus; some choice! Andrew was the brother of Simon, both first were followers of John the Baptist and both were commercial fishermen, not exactly the best scholarly and theological profession toward being a preacher.

Another set of brothers, James the elder and John the beloved, also professional fishermen, were called “BOANERGES” in Greek (probably from Hebrew “Beverages”) which in colloquial English could be rendered as “Hot Tempered,” not an enticing quality for the patient and gentle care giving of a minister.

Thomas (The “TWIN”) steadfastly refused to believe the women and the apostles who saw the Risen Lord, with that famous crude expression, “Unless I poke my fingers into the nail-holes of His hands and my fist into His side, I will not believe;” lack of faith is definitely not a recommendation for a minister of God!

Matthew belonged to the most hated profession in Rome–dominated Israel: TAX COLLECTOR, merciless, rapacious and exceedingly greedy. Not a recommended career to step up to ministry!

Then we have Simon the Zealot or Qanana, this last Jewish word can today be loosely translated as “Terrorist”, a stunning choice for the all-embracing, love-thy-enemy follower of Jesus.

Judas Iscariot (the man from Karioth, a southern village of Judea) was the treasurer of Jesus, so greedy that he betrayed his master…Wow!

Of the four remaining apostles (Bartholomew – son of Talmai – Levi, Thaddaeus, and Jude) we know nothing, and even there is some confusion about their names and

2015 YEAR OF CONCECRATED LIFE

Discovering vocation does not mean scrambling toward some prize just be-yond my reach but accepting the treas-ure of true self I already possess. Vocation does not come from a voice "out there" calling me to be something I am not. It comes from a voice "in here" calling me to be the person I was born to be, to fulfill the original selfhood given me at birth by God. —Thomas Merton

identities! They were nobodies and nothing then recommended them to become the pillars of the church. But as God said “My ways are not your ways, and my thoughts are not your thoughts.” Jesus chose them and they established the Holy, Roman, Catholic Church, the billion-strong family of Jesus’ friends, bent on proclaiming the Good News of a loving God to a murderous world. So…if today you, my dear people, hear or read about the failures and sins of deacons, priests and bishops, please remember that we clerics are chosen by God not because of any super-human quality, but because of a mysterious and inexplicable design of God on our lives to which, sometimes foolishly and sometimes generously, we have answered “yes”! As the song says, “Here I am, Lord. Is it I Lord? I have heard you calling in the night.” Please pray for us clerics; we are not perfect, just forgiven!

Thursday is the Feast of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, the Lady of the Scapular. The Blessed Mother appeared to an English Carmelite Friar, St. Simon Stock, and promised that no one would see the flames of Hell if they piously lived and died wearing the Scapular (an outside special vest that Friars wear). In the past, many Popes have approved such apparitions, and recent Popes have even allowed the substitution of the Scapular with Medal, which I wear around my neck day and night. Wear your Scapular or Medal!

I received complaints about our silence on the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) ruling on gay marriage. The US Council of Catholic Bishops prepared a response and has stated: The Supreme Court has tragically declared that states must issue marriage licenses to two persons of the same sex and recognize same sex “marriages” that were contracted in another state. This broad, adverse ruling redefines marriage in the law throughout the entire country, changing thousands of laws regarding marriage, family and children and threatening religious freedom in numerous ways. “Regardless of what a narrow majority of the Supreme Court may declare at this moment in history, the nature of the human person and marriage remains unchanged and unchangeable.” - Archbishop Kurtz, President of the USCCB

So what can we do my friends! PRAY, FAST AND SACRIFICE! The Bishops have encouraged Catholics to participate in a Call to Prayer for Life, Marriage and Religious Liberty. Please pray, read and meditate over the response to the Supreme Court decision. Pray the Holy Spirit gives the light to all of us faithful followers of Jesus! Visit www.usccb.org/pray for more information.

PRO-LIFE CORNER

Pope Francis in "Laudato Si," his encyclical on the environment, pointed to the important role families play in educating on a true human and

environmental ecology: They are the place where life is welcomed and protected, and where human growth is developed. "In the face of the so-called culture of death, the family is the heart of the culture of life," he said.

DOES GOD CARE WHAT I WEAR TO CHURCH? Activities and vacations can make getting to Mass each week seem like a juggling act. Harder still is finding the time to dress properly and pre-pare as we would like. But approaching all as-pects of the Eucharist carefully can deepen our Communion with Christ. What we wear can help. Make it feel special. If you were invited to a friend’s house for an evening wouldn’t you

wear something nice and appropriate? Sunday Mass is a special time for you and God. Wearing good clothes makes it feel special. Send a message. Mass is also a communal celebration. When you look nice in church, you send a message to your Catholic brothers and sisters that you value your time together in God’s house. Just because it’s “in style” doesn’t make it “in style” for God. Use this guideline. When deciding what to wear in Church, think about this: If it’s something you would wear to a picnic, to play a sport, or to clean out the garage or the house, don’t wear it to church—even when on vacation.

Gluten Free Hosts If you have an allergy to gluten, St. Mar-tha does have gluten free hosts. Please see

the sacristan or a deacon in the sacristy before Mass and request a gluten-free host

be consecrated during the Mass.

As you go on vacation or travel to family reunions this summer, say this prayer for a safe trip and return:

A Prayer for Travelers O Almighty and Merciful God, who

has commissioned your angels to guide and protect us, may they be our companions from our setting out until our return. Clothe us with their invisible protection, and keep us from all danger as we travel. And, finally, having preserved us from all evil, and espe-cially from sin, guide us to our heavenly home. We ask this through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.
