In hockey, players work hard together as a team in an effort toachieve one ultimate goal, to be victorious, to win that championship. For those fighting an illness such as breast cancer, that battle, thatvictory is also a team effort, where it takes everyone coming togetherto make progress, fight those hard battles with the eventual hope offinding a cure.

Express goaltender, Connor Shaw, knows firsthand the effects ofthis disease as he unfortunately lost his mother five years ago to breastcancer. But he also knows and appreciates the value of family, friendsand the teammates whose support has been never ending. The Railersare committed in their support, to help Connor and to help thecommunity by raising funds for breast cancer.

By lacing up with pink laces and using pink hockey tape in October(Breast Cancer Awareness month), the Express showed theirengagement, spirit and hopes of making a difference in the lives ofthose affected by breast cancer. Donations were accepted at their twoOctober home hockey games, with the Railer Express team matchingand raising a total of $1,726, towards breast cancer research. Also, ifsomeone donated $10 or more, their name was entered in a draw towin one of five gift baskets.

At their November 3 home game, team President Jerry Sodomlakpresented Connor Shaw, his father, Ken and Cancer Care Manitobarepresentative, Carman Nedohin the donation cheque. While the

Healthy Eating and Healthy Eyesby Dr. E Fiorentino

Eating healthy for your eyes could be themost promising means of protecting your eyesfrom AMD and cataracts. Generally speaking, the more brightly colored the fruit or vegetable, the more nutrient dense it will be. As an addi-tional benefit, foods that improve the stability ofthe blood vessels of the eye also demonstratecardio-vascular benefits. What is good for yourheart in good for your eyes. Planning menusrich in the nutrients described above can meanbetter overall health for you and your family.Consider eating eye healthy foods and gainbenefits for your whole body.

Vitamin E is more difficult to obtain fromfood sources, since it is found in very smallquantities. However, good food sources includevegetable oils (safflower and corn oil) almonds, pecans, wheat germ and sunflower seeds.

Beta-carotene is present in dark leafy veg-etables (spinach), deep orange or yellowfruits(carrots, mangos, sweet potatoes, can-taloupe, apricots and peaches), vegetables andfortified cereals.

Lutein and zeaxanthin are found togetherin many food sources. Dark green leafy vegeta-bles are the primary sources of lutein and zeax-anthin(kale, collard greens and spinach), butthey are also present in lesser amount in othercolorful fruits and vegetables, such as broccoli, orange peppers, corn, peas, persimmons andtangerines.

Good food sources of zinc include meat, liver, shellfish, milk, whole grains and wheatgerm. Omega 3 has been widely studied inthe treatment of dry eyes. Several studieshave determined that high levels of Omega 3supplementation subjectively improve thesymptoms of dry eye and the clinical meas-ures of tear film stability. Omega 3 rich foodsinclude fatty fish such as sardines andsalmon, flax seed and walnuts.

In other words healthy eatinghabits mean healthy eyes.

So, what types of foods are eye healthy? If you are familiar with the link between carrotsand good eye health, then you have done somehomework. Let’s explore other foods that canbenefit your eyes. These are foods that containthe six key nutrients for eye health.

Whether you donate money or time, giv-ing back is beneficial - and not just for the re-cipients. Research has shown that the oldadage, “it’s better to give than to receive” istrue after all.

“Life seems to be better, friendlier, moreconnected, more whole, more flowing when weparticipate in it by giving rather than taking.”

Here are 7 Reasons to Giving andVolunteering:

1. Develop new skills. Knowledge andexpertise are common side effects.

2. Make social connections. Meet newpeople.

3. Give back to your community. Re-ceive a sense of appreciation.

4. Develop and grow as a person. Learnby giving.

5. Gain a new perspective. This canhelp you see your life in a whole new light.

6. Know that you’re needed. Feelingneeded and appreciated are important.

7. Boost your self-esteem. Helpingothers makes you feel good about yourself.

Research has shown that the good feel-ings you experience when helping others maybe just as important to your health as exerciseand a healthy diet.

But it’s the smile from a child or a thankfulperson that shows you’re really making a dif-ference in someone’s life. And that’s the great-est feeling in the world.

So the holidays are upon us… Give aLittle! Get a lot of Joy! v

“The goal of theorganization,” addsco-chair, CarolFletcher (Minister ofTranscona MemorialUnited Church), “isto bring togetherresidents and com-munity stakehold-ers, for the purposeof understandingcommunity news, projects and oppor-tunities. Also to en-rich the lives of the

people of Transcona, so we can support andhelp each other with particular projects.”

TCN have always tried to stay ahead ofthe curve. In fact, one of their early projectsinvolved looking into public Wi-Fi spots. Cur-rently, they are working with the City of Win-nipeg and the Eastern Corridor Study to helpdevelop an effective Rapid Transit Systemfrom Transcona to downtown Winnipeg.

Of course this is only one of many proj-ects and initiatives TCN is involved with. Other

ongoing discussions include: seniors’ health, the Transcona library, youth employment, among many more.

Stacy advised, “At each meeting wehope to build connections in the Transconacommunity through creating a web of connec-tions with those who attend.”

TCN has also exchanged and shared up-coming community events, such as the Trans+ Form Street Art Festival, the TransconaCouncil for Seniors’ Annual Health Fair, theHealthy Together Now Grant, the TransconaTrails Youth Photography Contest, Open Fo-rums held by local MLA’s and more.

The membership of the TransconaCommunity Network is fluid and any numberof different stakeholders may attend a meet-ing. The meetings are held approximatelyfour times a year at Access Transcona.Membership includes the Transcona Biz,representatives of all three levels of Gov-ernment, WRHA, River East-TransconaSchool Division, local churches, TransconaCouncil for Seniors, local not-for-profits,other service organizations and members ofthe community.

“We are not a one issue group,” statedCarol. “There are multiple issues for which wecare very deeply.”

Stacy adds, “Transcona is its own littletown. The people here like to make wherethey live the best place to live!” v

For many years, we have had a Break-fast Club at Wayoata Elementary Schoolwhich has been supported by community vol-unteers. This year we have been struggling toget volunteers from the community to serve acontinental breakfast to the many childrenwho have been attending this program. OurClub is open to all children in the school whocould benefit from having breakfast.

We would like to invite individuals whocould volunteer because we are in jeopardy

of losing this very important program. OurBreakfast program serves more than break-fast; it serves friendship, kindness and a placewhere kids feel welcomed.

Children come to eat breakfast everyMonday, Wednesday, Friday and volunteersare required from 730am -830am on thosedays to help with setting up, serving food (ce-real/ milk/ cutting fruit/veggies/ making toastand sometimes special items for celebratingevents), clean up and a smile.

Are you that special person looking tomake a child smile and start their day off in thebest way possible? Than we are looking foryou to be part of our club!

Whether you are interested in volun-teering on any or all of those days, or if youknow someone who might be interested involunteering at our school, any help tosave our breakfast program would begreatly appreciated.

ATTENTION TRANSCONAWE WANT YOUR NEWS!

The Transcona Titans Hockey team re-cently displayed their talent in The Windy Cityduring the Chicago Fall Classic Hockey tourna-ment, October 19-22. This team of 17 youngmen travelled to Chicago to take on a Hockeychallenge and they came home with the Gold.

This team is Unique in Nature for a fewreasons. Head Coach Myles Nykoluk and As-sistant Dillon Bordian were both previous Titans, and have now taken to the bench to give backto the school. Along with Assistant Coach DougJohnson, who has taken a full circle turn incoaching these boys. Doug was with a largemajority of the group at ages 8-10, and has nowreconnected to see them through some of theirlast years of organized hockey. This team hasplayed B-division high school hockey for years

but was challenged this year with placement inthe WHSHL A-division, and they are showingthat this is where they deserve to be.

The trip toChicago began onThursday with somesightseeing, and thenoff to downtown tocatch a BlackHawksgame.  The nextmorning the teamwas lucky enough tovisit Navy Pier beforegetting their gamefaces on.

The tournament for the boys began withtheir first game Friday at 4:00 pm with a 5-2

Win against the local team, the Joliet Jaguars. The boys then went on to have an Amazing 6-0 SHUTOUT win versus the Rock CountryRaptors, and that set the tone for the rest ofthe tournament.

Saturday Morning had the team face offwith the Vaughn Rangers, and they played with

their hearts to a 7-3 victory guaranteeing thema spot in the final gold medal game. Later thatevening after a team dinner back at the hotel, the boys showed up once again, and itshowed, in a 4-1 win versus the Cedar RapidsRoughriders.

The next morning the boys watched gamescores intently to see who would be their chal-lenger in the final match. Finally, it was deter-mined that they would once again play theRoughriders and they went on the ice and man-aged to beat them in a close 2-0 Shutout game.

Both goal tenders, Eric and Ethan, got togo home with a Shutout under their belt.

This team of 17 is made up of 14 youngmen who will all be graduating this year. Thecloseness and family like connection is visibleon and off the ice. A lot of them have been to-gether on the ice since their first years inHockey. These young men are making this lastyear, a year to remember, by playing loud andproud and showing their Titan Pride in every-thing they do. v

The role of the Legion Liaison is to pro-vide a connection between the Transcona Le-gion Branch # 7 and the following groups: TheLadies Auxiliary # 7, 1st Transcona Scouts, and the 350 Transcona Branch of the SeaCadets.

The Liaison provides Legion Branch up-dates and information during the Ladies’monthly meetings and will raise Auxiliary mat-ters of concern at Legion executive meetings. The Liaison can also act as a go-between,when joint activities and functions are plannedand require mutual assistance. The Scouts and Cadets actively par-ticipate in Legion ceremonies and activitiessuch as Remembrance Day and the Poppycampaign.

This mutual support ensures the contin-uing bond between our veterans, past andpresent, with some of today’s youth. It alsodemonstrates the Legion’s involvement in pro-grams for our local youth.

This relationship is mutually beneficial toall parties and the Liaison is an important roleto ensure that relationship is continued. v

Building a Better Community for Persons with Disabilities

by James Teitsma, MLA for the Constituency of RadissonI recently had the privilege of participat-

ing in Take Your MLA to Work Day. This an-nual event, hosted by the ManitobaSupported Employment Network, is intendedto raise awareness about the benefits of hir-ing Manitobans with disabilities. Theydemonstrate that integrated, community-based employment and careers are the bestway to support those with disabilities. Byhighlighting these success stories, they hopeto encourage more inclusive hiring practices, celebrate inclusive employers and illustratethe contributions of Manitobans with disabil-ities to the workforce.

I was invited this year to spend time withCynthia, who works with Greg Veosovich andthe amazing team at Tim Hortons at 1495 Re-gent Ave. West. Cynthia is supported by Con-nect Employment Service, and herresponsibilities include operating an industrialdishwasher, keeping store rooms and refrig-erators neat and tidy and helping other em-ployees with whatever needs doing. She’senthusiastic and works hard. With her income, she hopes to move out of her parents’ homenext year.

On Take Your MLA to Work Day last year,I joined Bethany at Ambutech Inc. in the St.Boniface Industrial Park. Ambutech is theworld’s leading supplier of mobility canes and ul-trasonic mobility aids, benefiting millions of indi-viduals with visual and balance impairments.Despite being visually impaired, Bethany an-swers phones, e-mails and tracks orders and at-tends trade shows around the world. She haseven taken an international flight unaccompa-nied. She’s doing things she never dreamed shecould do, all because her employer gave her theopportunity to learn and grow. Since starting atAmbutech, Bethany and her husband havebeen able to purchase their own home - adream they didn’t think they would ever be ableto achieve. I very much appreciated Bethany’sinvitation and learned a great deal when she ledme on a tour of the manufacturing facility. I’m soimpressed by this amazing company and byBethany’s success.

Another great example of an inclusiveworkplace for persons with disabilities in ourcommunity is L’Arche Tova Cafe at 119 Re-gent Ave. West. L’Arche Tova Cafe is a socialenterprise that shares the gifts of people with

developmental disabilities with our commu-nity. They have delicious food and great serv-ice, and provide meaningful employment topeople with disabilities. Perhaps the best partis that the general public gets the opportunityto interact with people with disabilities, andgets to know them.

I applaud every employer who makes theeffort to integrate a person with a disability intothe workforce. This reflects what we want inour community: generosity, care and compas-sion; a community that recognizes the valueof each and every person; and a communitythat understands happiness comes more fromwhat we give than from what we get. v

SeasonsGreetings

It’s Time for Universal Pharmacare!by Daniel Blaikie

The NDP’s founding leader Tommy Dou-glas once dreamed of a universal, public, andcomprehensive health care system for allCanadians. In its first phase, medicare wouldrelieve families of the cost of hospitalizationand physicians’ fees. In its second phase, pre-scription drugs would be publicly insured toguarantee universal access.

Phase 2 is decades overdue. The failureof successive federal governments to do itcontinues to cost Canadians billions of dollarsevery year. Both the need, and the benefits,of reducing prescription drug costs are obvi-ous and well documented.

An Angus Reid survey found that one infive Canadians reported someone in their familyhad skipped a prescription because theycouldn’t afford it. That’s unacceptable, and it’scosting lives. Canada should not be the onlycountry in the world with a medicare system thatdoesn’t include prescription drugs.

That is why New Democrats are contin-uing the fight for a universal pharmacare pro-gram to lower prescription drug costs forCanadians.

The Parliamentary Budget Office re-leased a report in September that examinedthe costs of a national pharmacare programand found that, even with high levels of cov-

erage, a public drug plan would save Canadi-ans more than $4 billion a year. A study pub-lished in the Canadian Medical AssociationJournal suggests the annual savings could beas high as $9.4 billion.

Polls have shown that more than 90 per-cent of Canadians support the concept of uni-

versal pharmacare. A lack of political will bysuccessive Liberal and Conservative govern-ments is the only thing holding us back.

The NDP’s first motion in the House ofCommons since electing our new leader, Jag-meet Singh, called on the government tobegin negotiations with the provinces withinthe next twelve months. The Liberals votedwith the Conservatives to defeat the motionand maintain an unacceptable status quo.

An NDP government would make goodon Tommy’s dream and ensure that all Cana-dians can afford the medications they need toget healthy, and stay healthy. vHouse of Commons, October 5, 2017

Mr. Daniel Blaikie (Elmwood–Transcona, NDP)

“I have talked to a lot of seniors in Elm-wood-Transcona as well. It is clear that seniorson fixed incomes who are just receiving CPP andare relying on the GIS are not able to afford theirprescription drugs. Having a national pharma-care plan would make those drugs affordable forthem and would take away one of the manypressures people who do not have enough in-come face. They face those pressures when itcomes to housing. They face those pressureswhen it comes to food. One way we could helpthat is concrete and makes sense is to establisha national plan so that by virtue of coordinatingour purchases in a different way, the money weare already spending on drugs would be less, which would mean more money for other things.”
