As I prepared to write for March, I checked the LWMS calendar to see who was featured for that month. It is Kenneth Pasch, Thailand. He writes:

“WELS is helping to support a dozen missions throughout northern Thailand. In addition, a seminary and Bible Institute are training students to serve as pastors and evangelists to assist in meeting the spiritual needs of the people we serve and in reaching out to the masses with the gospel.

Thailand is a unique country with a distinct culture that includes a variety of sub-cultures and languages. Ninety-eight percent of the 66 million inhabitants practice the national religion of Buddhism. Our Missions are currently reaching out to the Thai, Issan, Hmong, and Lao peoples in northern Thailand in order to bring them God's promise of eternal life through the comforting message of his love and forgiveness in Christ. The message of the gospel is unknown to 98 percent of the people living in this beautiful country.

Pray for our church workers and the congregations they serve, that the gospel message will continue to add more souls to the family of God.” Ninety-eight percent of 66 million people is a staggering amount of people who do not know Jesus. Remember to pray for all of our called workers that the gospel message may reach the nations and also pray for the safety of our called workers. If you are able to support missions with a monetary gift, it will be most welcomed. The Dodge/Washington LWMS Spring Rally will be held at St. Lucas, Kewaskum, with co-host Zion, Allenton, on Saturday, April 5, 2014. EVERYONE is invited (including men)! The guest speaker will be Linda Liesener on the Central Africa Medical Mission (CAMM). Registration is at 8:30 AM with opening service at 9:00 AM. When you register, you may make a donation to cover the rally expenses (speaker, food, etc.) Guest speaker, business meeting, elections for Mission projects and officers will follow. The Home Mission project choices are Vicars in Mission Settings or Vans for Missions. The World Mission project

From the Pastor’s Desk

Matthew 16:21 – “From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life.”

March 5th we enter a new season of the church calendar year known as “Lent.” Lent comes from an old English word -“lengten.” After a brutal winter it is a reminder that the days are lengthening and the new life and fun activities of spring/summer are coming soon! The season of Lent includes forty days from Ash Wednesday (March 5th) to the day before Easter Sunday (April 19th). The official observance of Lent does not include Sundays because Christians are meant to celebrate every Sunday as “Little Easters.” During the season of Lent, some Christians observe some extra form of self discipline like not eating or drinking certain things – chocolate, meat, soda, alcohol, etc. Other Christians focus on other forms of self discipline like daily Bible reading, daily exercise, or giving up television, movies, video games, or another form of entertainment. It’s not wrong to do those things, and in fact observing a form of self discipline during Lent can be valuable. But it is only valuable if it leads you to reflect more deeply on the great sacrifice of our Savior Jesus. Whether you give something up this Lent or not, this season of the church year is a perfect time for you and your family to reflect upon your relationship with God. It’s a perfect time for you and your family to spend more time in Bible reading and prayer -meditating deeply on the meaning of Christ’s suffering and death for YOU. It’s a perfect time to spend more time in worship to thank and praise Jesus for all that he has done to save us for eternity. It’s a perfect time to concentrate on the continuing importance of striving to change our sin tainted lives out of thankfulness for our Savior’s sacrifice and simply because through Jesus we can. God’s blessings upon your observance of Lent this year!

From the Principal’s Desk

St. John’s Lutheran School exists to glorify Jesus Christ, assisting parents in educating, training, and nurturing his children for this life and for heaven.

February marked the end of our basketball season. It was great to see the boys and girls improve on their skills and play in competitive games. Congratulations to both teams for representing themselves, their school, and their Savior in a magnificent way throughout the season! We are traveling to one more tournaments. We usually end our season at KML, but we have the opportunity to field a co-ed team for the Luther Prep High School tournament. This tournament consists of WELS schools from across the nation. We are excited to share the love of basketball with our fellow believers! Registration for the 2014-2015 school year will begin shortly. Information packets for PK-8 will be sent out in March to everyone who has school-aged children in our congregation. If you do not receive this information by the beginning of April, please contact the school office right away. How Do I Know If It's Depression?

Someone who is depressed has feelings of sadness or anxiety that last for weeks at a time. He or she may also experience–

Feelings of hopelessness and/or pessimism

Feelings of guilt, worthlessness and/or helplessness

Irritability, restlessness

Loss of interest in activities or hobbies once pleasurable

Fatigue and decreased energy

Difficulty concentrating, remembering details and making decisions

Insomnia, early–morning wakefulness, or excessive sleeping

Overeating or appetite loss

Thoughts of suicide, suicide attempts

Persistent aches or pains, headaches, cramps, or digestive problems that do not get better, even with treatment

How is Depression Different for Older Adults?

Older adults are at increased risk. We know that about 80% of older adults have at least one chronic health condition, and 50% have two or more. Depression is more common in people who also have other illnesses (such as heart disease or cancer) or whose function becomes limited.

Older adults are often misdiagnosed and undertreated. Healthcare providers may mistake an older adult's symptoms of depression as just a natural reaction to illness or the life changes that may occur as we age, and therefore not see the depression as something to be treated. Older adults themselves often share this belief and do not seek help because they don't understand that they could feel better with appropriate treatment.

How Do I Find Help?

Most older adults see an improvement in their symptoms when treated with anti-depression drugs, psychotherapy, or a combination of both. If you are concerned about a loved one being depressed, offer to go with him or her to see a health care provider to be diagnosed and treated.

If you or someone you care about is in crisis, please seek help immediately.

Health News– March 2014 Depression is Not a Normal Part of Growing Older

Depression is a true and treatable medical condition, not a normal part of aging. However older adults are at an increased risk for experiencing depression. If you are concerned about a loved one, offer to go with him or her to see a health care provider to be diagnosed and treated.

Depression is not just having "the blues" or the emotions we feel when grieving the loss of a loved one. It is a true medical condition that is treatable, like diabetes or hypertension.

The 2014-2015 calendar was approved. Calendar highlights will be sent with pre registration packets. All dates have been created on the website calendar.

Entertainment Night is scheduled for Thursday, May 22 at 6:30pm Christmas Eve service report from teachers was discussed Mr. Hunter’s personal computer quit working. A school-issued

computer was purchased for him. Accreditation items are just about finished for 2013-2014. BoE Policy

Handbook is the only item left. A VBS committee will be advertised soon to help with organizing the

summer events. The hope is that this committee will take off some of the load from our teachers.

Ladies’ Auxiliary March 2014

The Ladies Auxiliary met Tuesday, February 11th.

Pastor Schaser joined us and offered devotion on Philippians 4:8 using a Forward in Christ article from Pastor Joel Heckendorf of Greenville, WI. What a beautiful verse we studied that night! “Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable – if anything is excellent or praiseworthy – think about such things.”

In his article, Pastor Heckendorf uses some interesting imagery to discuss the training and proper diet we need to feed our souls and stay away from what “satisfies our sweet tooth for sin.” The apostle Paul encouraged the Philippians, and us, to look upward for more healthy options (of which there are a great many). The article then looks at each of the beautiful adjectives in the verse and poses some thought-provoking questions. You can check out the full article plus the 3 others currently available in Forward in Christ by Pastor Heckendorf. They are part of a series on the 12 Most Popular Bible Passages accessed in 2012 through Bible Gateway and are available on www.wels.net/forwardinchrist.

Staying on the sweet tooth vein for just a moment, the Auxiliary dropped off a nice box of scrumptious treats for the staff over at Kettle Moraine High School as part of the Staff Appreciation project. Knowing the quality of baked goods coming from the kitchens of our members, I’m sure the staff at KML enjoyed everything in the box. A big thank you to all the ladies who shared their time and talents to help put the box together which, in turn, served to thank the great staff over at KML.

The Program Committee is gearing up for this year’s Ladies’ Spring Banquet set for May 13th. Watch for more info to come. It’s always a fun evening with some great fellowship, good food and entertainment. We hope to see you there!

Our next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, March 11th, with fellowship starting at 6:30 pm. and followed by devotion with Pastor Schaser and our regular business meeting at 7:00 pm. Our hostesses that night will be Bev and Sue Laubenstein.

In closing, guests are always welcome at our meetings. The Auxiliary is open to any communicant women in the congregation. Please consider joining us sometime soon.
