Mary Help of Christians Prayer Most Holy and Immaculate Virgin,
Help of Christians, we place
ourselves under your motherly
protection.
Throughout the Church's history
you have helped Christians in times
of trial, temptation and danger.
Time and time again, you have
proven to be the Refuge of Sinners,
the Hope of the Hopeless, the
Consoler of the Afflicted, and the
Comforter of the Dying.
We promise to be faithful disciples of Jesus Christ,
your Son, to proclaim His Good News of God's love
for all people, and to work for peace and
justice in our world.
With faith in your intercession, we pray for the
Church, for our family and friends, for the poor and
abandoned, and all the dying.
Grant, O Mary, Help of Christians, the graces of
which we stand in need.
May we serve Jesus with fidelity and love until death.
Help us and our loved ones to attain the boundless joy
of being forever with our Father in Heaven. Amen

National Walk Safely to School Day
National Walk Safely to School Day was held last Friday 19th May and it was great to see many families participating, despite the showery weather. The Walk Safely to School Day initiative encourages parents, carers and their children to walk and commute safely to school. It promotes the vitally important message: “Active Kids are Healthy Kids”. You can teach your child the healthy habit of walking more by: walking with them the whole way to school; or if they get the bus, walk past your usual stop and get on at the next stop; or if you have to drive, park the car a few blocks away and walk. Thank you to everyone who embraced this initiative by walking to school on Friday!
VALUE OF THE WEEK: “Learning” 1
RE NEWS
Lismore Book Drive Our Mini Vinnies students have labelled and sorted through all of the donated books for the flood affected areas in New South Wales. They have sent the books to St James‛, Murwillumbah with special messages. Thank you to these students, and to all of the families who donated books for our book drive.
Shoe Box Collection We are right in the middle of the “Winter Shoe Box Collection” for 2017. We are asking families to fill a shoebox to help out a refugee or homeless person. Items to fill a box can include non perishable food items, up & go breakfasts, muesli bars, toiletries, hats, scarves, socks, underwear, books. We need lots of empty shoe boxes as well. Please write on the box if it is intended for a man, woman, boy or girl. You may want to include a letter, it is up to you! Please dig deep for those in need. Filled boxes may be taken directly to the church at any weekend Mass. We are still on the hunt for more empty shoe boxes as well. Please send any to Mrs Clarke at the Primary Campus, or Mrs Willis at the Infants Campus. The shoe box collection will run for all of May and June, to be distributed in early July. Thank you in advance for your support.

Parents most welcome to join us. Mary Help of Christians is another title given to Mary, Jesus‛ mother. It has been celebrated in Australia since 1844. Mary is a special person to Catholics, especially Australians.
Congratulations Congratulations to Billy and Charlie Cox, and Makayla and Jacinta Hoffman on receiving the Sacrament of Baptism last weekend. We will keep you in our thoughts and prayers as we recognise this special time for you all.

Winter Uniform All students are expected to be wearing full school winter uniform by Tuesday 13th June (Week 8). Up until this time students may decide to wear either full summer or full winter uniform. A reminder that a tie is to be worn at all times with our winter uniform. We remind all students and their parents to label all items of clothing, lunch boxes and drink bottles so that these items can be returned to their rightful owner as soon as possible. Thank you to all parents for ensuring that your children are well presented each day. It is important as a school community to continue to set high expectations on the way we present each day. Fun Friends for Kindergarten, Term 3 & 4, 2017
Everybody gets worried or sad sometimes. All children feel anxious as a part of their normal development. Fun Friends was developed by world-renowned Child Psychologist Professor Paula Barrett to equip children and their families with life skills that build resilience and social-emotional strength to cope with stresses and challenges that are a part of everyday life. Research has shown that children who are resilient (able to bounce back from adversity) are more likely to succeed at school, develop healthy peer relationships, and are less likely to develop mental health problems. During this Program, which will be implemented in Terms 3 & 4 during PDH&PE Lessons each Wednesday, your child will learn how to be “brave” and deal with difficulties, to recognise signs of anxiety, relaxation strategies for staying calm, how to build positive relationships with others, to develop positive thinking, and how to try new things and face their fears.
We will be hosting a Parent Information Night, Thursday 22nd June at 5.15p.m. To make it easier for you, this is the same night as the School Disco. The Meeting shall be held in the Art Room at the Primary Campus. Drop your child off at the Disco, settle them in, then come down to the Art Room where you will
receive an Outline of the Fun Friends Program and the ways you can support it at home. Looking forward to seeing you there. Cheers, Andy Lockwood Fun Friends Facilitator St Edward’s School

WISE WORDS FOR FAMILIES “Being a Great Dad to your Daughter” By Michael Grose www.parentingideas.com.au
A father’s in砱uence lasts a lifetime, and it is an important complement to the mothering role. More and more research is conrming that a female’s sense of worth as a woman, is commonly rooted in her experience with her father. Fathers aect the lives of their daughters in intriguing ways. Including her academic and vocational path, her career success and nancial well-being. The well-fathered daughter is also the most likely to have relationships with men that are emotionally intimate and fullling, and have better emotional and mental health. Here are ve tips to help you be a great father to your daughter. Make the connection One of the most natural ways a father can make a connection with his daughter is through purposeful physical aection. A hug, shoulder squeeze or a kiss on the cheek helps to create an emotional bond with daughters who desperately crave these displays of aection. This is great news for fathers, because if you can’t nd the words to say it then you have a second opportunity to show it through physical gestures. Studies have proven that physical touch makes us feel better both physiologically and psychologically. But children, especially daughters, need more than just everyday gestures given in passing. When a girl’s need for aection is met by her father, it has a protective measure on her future sexual relationships. Invest in her As a father, you can appreciate your daughter for who she truly is. Help her to identify her unique qualities and value them. Avoid investing in who you think she should be. This can happen when fathers feel like they don’t understand their daughters. Remember, this can happen easily as girls tend to morph into what is expected of them rather than excel towards who they truly are. Spend time together, share stories and experiences. Give her opportunities to show her true self, and this will strengthen the relationship. Listen without xing Dads wishing to x things can make us lousy listeners. Your important job is to listen out for the feelings and the emotions; your daughter just wants to be heard. Listening is essential for every father, even though it sometimes goes against their instincts. You do not need to agree with everything she says or does, but when you listen, you build the emotional connection that will help her listen to you when it really counts.
10
Watch your language The language you use when talking to girls matters. Everything that is said can be taken very seriously and to heart by your daughter. Thoughts and comments are easily internalised, amplied and exaggerated. Dierentiate being pretty from being beautiful. Praise her for the values and characteristics she has which make her beautiful. Provide warmth Fathers need to nd their softer side when dealing with their daughters, to help them open up and share and provide an emotionally safe place for them. When fathers are called upon to give corrections or direction, they can do this in a warm and loving manner that she will positively respond to. Oer your strength to your daughter in a dierent way than you would to a son. Be a positive male role model As a girl tries to gure out what men are like, the rst one she watches is her father. He can be one very signicant example of a man who is consistent, trustworthy, and sensitive to feelings, who places his family at a high priority in his schedule, who keeps his promises, and who invests his energies in the lives of those around him. As her father, you play a large role in showing your daughter what a proper, respectful male response sounds and feels like. One of the most important factors that determines a woman’s condence in life is the relationship she had with her father. You are in a privileged position to make a remarkable dierence to a future woman’s life. If you are sole mother then don’t despair. Girls can have exposure to positive male roles through contact with family relatives, male teachers and sporting coaches. The notion of sparenting is an important one for us as a community to embrace, so that kids get exposure to a wide variety of gender models.
