Think, O God, of our friends who are ill, whom we now commend to Your compassionate regard. Comfort them upon their sickbed and ease their suffering. We beg for deliverance, and submit that no healing is too hard for the Lord, if it be His will. We therefore pray that You bless our friends with Your loving care, renew their strength, and heal what ails them in Your loving name. Thank you Lord

DAILY PRAYER FOR PRIESTS

Eternal Father, we lift up to You these and all the priests of the world. Sanctify them. Heal and guide them. Mold them into the likeness of Your Son, Jesus, the Eternal High Priest. May their lives be pleasing to You. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

PRAYER FOR SEMINARIANS

O Lord Jesus Christ, great High Priest, I pray that you call many worthy souls to your holy priest-hood. Enlighten the Bishop and Vocation Director in the choice of candidates, the Spiritual Directors in molding them, and the professors in instructing them. Lead the seminarians daily in your unerring footsteps, so that they may become priests who are models of purity, possessors of wisdom, and heroes of sacrifice. May they be steeped in humility and aflame with love for God and man, apostles of your glory, and sanctifiers of souls. Mary, Queen of the Clergy, pray for us. Amen

“I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you”

From the beginning, God wants to bless us. Our trouble is whether we trust God to allow him to bless us or try to achieve our goals without Him. Too often, we want God’s blessing without a relationship with God. There is no way to have God’s blessing without God. Original sin nourishes this attitude within us. It is what necessitates Jesus’ death on the cross. Jesus has to demonstrate the futility of our way and the trustworthiness of God’s love. Without suffering, we could never truly love nor be loved by God. In the Gospel, Jesus takes Peter, James, and John up a mountain and is transfigured before them. The three apostles see a vision of Jesus in glory, speaking with Moses and Elijah. Peter says, “it is good that we are here.” He hardly knows what he is saying, but it is good. It is good to be in the presence of God. The presence of God changes every circumstance. However, it requires faith in God. From the midst of the cloud, God says, “This is my beloved son…listen to him.” Faith in Jesus is required. The apostles fell down in fear until Jesus spoke to them. Likewise, through the storms of life, it is faith in Jesus, which gives us the strength to stand. Some people say that suffering is a hard fact of life. This is meant to say that suffering is meaningless and we should just get over it. Who can just get over suffering? Christians are to face suffering bravely, but the suffering is not trivial or meaningless. St. Paul tells us, “Bear your share of hardship for the gospel.” He says this so that we can also be sharers in his glory. The world says to avoid suffering at all costs. Jesus invites us to follow God even if it means suffering. In the process, we learn that God is our strength even in the midst of suffering, a truth which opens us to glory in heaven. The anatomy of suffering is a heart constricted. Our hearts constrict in fear because we are afraid that what the world says is true, that suffering alone is our lot. Throughout Lent, we are invited to confront the lie that we are made for suffering and pain. We do this through voluntary fasting, in the knowledge that there will be an end to it. We suffer through Lent, but not for nothing. There is joy that comes as a fruit of our fasting. We also consider the example of Jesus. His trust in God was not in vain. Jesus' life demonstrates that suffering has immense value for the salvation of the world and that God does not abandon His own even when circumstances seem to the contrary. A wise man once said to me that in the midst of suffering, the call is to say, “FIAT.” Fiat is the response of Mary to the angel Gabriel from the Latin fiat voluntas tua [Let it be done unto me according to your will[. Fiat is the part of the phrase which means, “let it be done unto me.” Fiat takes some of the sting away from suffering because we place ourselves in God’s hands. The same man taught me that through his experiences the pain always lessened when he gave God his fiat like Mary. This is no easy task, and I do not wish to trivialize anyone’s pain. Rather, I want to point out there is a way through suffering, which is good for our souls. Throughout Lent, Jesus goes before us. He offers teaching, but more importantly, He suffers. Jesus suffers more than any human being. Jesus receives every human suffering so that in every difficulty, we can know Jesus goes before us. We also can know because of what Jesus did, the suffering we experience is changed forever. It cannot be meaningless. It has eternal value in the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross. Uniting our suffering to Jesus’ on the cross is the way we tap into this great gift. My brothers and sisters, we all sin, and we all experience suffering. Jesus offers us a new way to respond. It is the only way to live with lasting peace. Many or all of us have tried other ways to escape suffering. They lead us nowhere, end in despair, or bring us back to Jesus. The question before us is whether or not we will follow Jesus throughout the sufferings of this life. Do we trust God that He has a plan for us, including our suffering? Fr. Campeaux

Adorers for perpetual adoration needed

Monday 9:00 a.m. Tuesday 10:00 a.m. “Come to me, all you that labor, and are burdened, and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28 Please call Andrea Robinson at 223-0640 to commit spending an hour with the Lord.

Perpetual Adoration In union with Christ’s passion, we offer up as sacrifice upon the fleshy altars of our hearts all that we lack. In return we receive from on high the fullness of Christ’s body, blood, soul and divinity in the Eucharist, and we see the Word become flesh in our own lives.

Bishop Deshotel Declares “Year of St. Joseph”

150 years ago, Pope Pius IX declared St. Joseph as the Universal Patron of the Church. In light of this anniversary, Bishop Deshotel has established a year of St. Joseph in the Diocese of Lafayette from March 19th of this year until March 19th of 2021. During this year, we as a diocese will med-itate on St. Joseph’s life, befriend him in prayer, and seek his protection. Be on the lookout for events celebrating this year in your parish, in one of the 13 Church parishes named for St. Joseph, and across the entire diocese. Join us as we kick off the Year of St. Joseph on Thursday, March 19th, 2020. Bishop Deshotel will celebrate the year’s Opening Mass at St. Joseph’s in Patterson (1011 First Street, Patterson, LA) at 9:00am on Thursday, March 19th. That same day at 6pm, Bishop Deshotel will celebrate Adoration and Evening Prayer at St. John’s Cathedral in Lafayette

Baptism class on March 17 @ 6:30 pm. Call office to register.
