REGISTRATION: If you are new in the parish, please register at the rectory or online at our website. If you moved out of the parish, please notify the rectory. If you saw someone dead come to life tomorrow, what would you change about your life? Would you say "nothing"? That's what Jesus seems to hope. After all, we already know what to do. In this Sunday's Gospel, a rich man and a poor man pass away, the former to damnation and the latter to peaceful rest alongside the Jewish patriarchs. The rich man asks if the poor man can appear to his brothers and advise them to live a more virtuous life. The parable offers a strong rebuke: "They have Moses and the prophets. Let them listen to them." In other words, they should already know what to do. We, too, know what to do. More than Moses, Jesus Christ himself has spoken, and continues to speak through his Church. The rich man did not heed the wise words, despite knowing them. If we are convicted against certain Christian teachings in our heart, how much good will miraculous "proofs" do? We know more than the law and the prophets - we know the prophetic law of love pro- claimed by Jesus Christ. Are we living like we believe it? Where in our lives are we like the rich man? Do we know how to treat the poor but still we ignore them in our excess? Do we know the third commandment, but the Sunday liturgy feels "optional" when other weekend commitments arise? Have we heard Christ's teachings on sexuality, but consid- er them out of reach for us? We have received a great many truths as Christian people. We are blessed by God with the sacraments and the abundance of His graces. We have what we need - in Him - to begin to live a virtuous life now. 400 CENTER ROAD, BEDFORD, OHIO 44146-2296 Fr. Catechesis is the act of handing on the Word of God. It is intended to inform the faith com-munity, and RCIA catechumen and candidates for initiation into the Church, about the teach-ings of Christ transmitted by the apostles. If you or someone that you know are interested in inquiring about more information about the

Catholic Church, please contact Fr. Joe or Louise at the parish office.

BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT SESSIONS We are planning another 8 consecutive week Bereave-ment Support Group to begin in October. Sessions will be held on Tuesday mornings at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Hope Church. These are not counseling sessions but strictly support from the parishioners who are grieving. They offer an opportunity to share your grief and emo-tions that go with it in a comfortable atmosphere. All ses-sions begin with a guided reflection and there is time for sharing. Please contact Louise at the parish office if you wish to attend.

We extend our sincere sympathy and prayers to the family & friends of the recently deceased— Lawrence Checki Ernest A. Aczel, Sr.

May their souls and the souls of all the faithful departed rest in peace.

Dear Parishioners, I have hired John Franks to be the mu-sic director at Saint Mary, replacing Coeli Ingold who left to be the full-time music minister at St. Barnabas. John will play the 4:00pm Saturday Vigil and the 9:15am Sunday Mass at St. Mary. He will direct the choir and play for weddings and funerals. When Chris McGilton is unable to play for a given Mass at Our Lady of Hope, John Franks will substitute for him. I asked John to write a few words about himself, and his introduction to the people at Saint Mary and Our Lady of Hope is below.

“I would like to introduce myself to the parish of St. Mary and Our Lady of Hope. Most recently I was work-ing in Port Clinton, and for nine years before that I worked in Sandusky. I was born and raised here in Cleveland, and I’m very happy to be returning. Playing for a church is a unique kind of job, but it’s one I enjoy so much. Working with cantors and choirs gives me a certain amount of enjoyment that I would not have in any other job. I am the eighth of ten children. Mom taught or started to teach all of us piano. The proviso was that one had to wait for the older child to have given up (as all of them did) before you had your turn. If you learn one thing in a large family, it’s to wait your turn. So I started piano when I was eight. I broke the mold, and I never stopped playing. All through school I sang in choir and played in the school orchestra.

When I was thirteen-fourteen I joined the Men's Choir in our parish. It was a TTBB (or tenor, tenor, baritone and bass) group. That really sparked my interest in church music. A few years later I also joined the folk group, being the only member singing pre-Vatican II music and early 70's church music. In 1984, I started college major-ing in organ and minoring in piano and voice. In 1988, after playing part time at St. Leo 's, I worked at Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Lorain. As I mentioned before, playing for the Mass gives me a special enjoy-ment. I look forward to meeting the choir, and together we hope to enhance the music at Saint Mary. I attended Mass at Saint Mary last Saturday, and I was happy to hear the congregation singing so enthusiastically. I hope to enhance the number of hymns we might know, and I hope to help not just the parish, but my own participation and growth in the liturgy here. I look forward to meeting all of you.” John Franks

    THIS WEEK’S EVENTS:

INCREASED OFFERTORY PROGRAM This week you will receive a brochure detailing the In-creased Offertory Program our parish will be participating in over the next few weeks. This informative brochure is intended to communicate how we, as a parish, want to ad-vance our mission and how we are serving God’s people in our community. Commitment Sunday for this program is Sunday, October 6th. We encourage all parishioners to spend time in prayer and discussion with your family re-flecting on how you are able to help us. We look forward to seeing all of our parishioners at Mass next weekend for this very important Commitment Sunday. If you have any questions regarding the increased Offertory Program, please feel free to contact the parish office.

BLANKET SUNDAY Next weekend is Blanket Sunday, sponsored by the Diocesan St. Vincent de Paul Society. When you make a donation, your money will go further through bulk purchase of blankets and other items for the homeless and poor

individuals in our own metropolitan area. Please make all checks out to “St. Vincent de Paul Society” and mark Blanket Sunday in the memo. So “blanket” someone for the winter—and give yourself a warm feeling! You may also donate online at www.svdpcle.org.

THANK YOU! A big thank you from St. Vincent de Paul Society to all those who participated in the St. Mary Cookout/Ice Cream Social last weekend. Your generous donation of $270 from the proceeds will help many in our area!
