PREFACE

Rize’s geography, full of surprises, astonishes travelers by revealing a variety of natural riches in each region. When you proceed from the east to the west, you come across sparkling lakes that wink in the nooks of mountains. Rich blue gla-cial lakes that present views befitting postcards have a wild beauty. While some frighten you with its depth, some simply resemble flower gardens with all kinds of plants around them. While you watch the sun smiling on the water in the morning, you lose the sight of the lake right beside you with the fog that goes down at mid-day. With the reflections of light far up, a riot of colors that turn purple from blue is experienced in the evening.

Page 5: RİZE: THE CITY OF GLACIAL LAKES · Rize hosts the biggest (Ambar Lake) and deepest (Deniz Lake) glacial lakes of Turkey. Most lakes, in terms of number, are found within the borders

One of the rare cities that nestle a large number of glacial lakes within its borders, Rize aims to bring these indescribable beauties and tourism together. This guide book is of great importance in the sense that it is the first of those studies carried out in this subject matter. In addition to the “Bridges”, “Waterfalls” and “Plateaus” guide books that we have published before, we are confident that the “Glacial Lakes” guide book, along with the other books in the making, whose themes are “Old Mansions” and “Rize: The City of Adventure”, will play an effective role in the publicity of Rize. I would like to thank everyone that contributed efforts in this work and Halkbank General Directorate, which supported the publication of this book.

GLACIAL LAKES

Lake, as a geographical term, is defined as fresh or salty, a somewhat deep and large body of water that fills depression areas on land. We can classify the lakes on the Earth’s surface as tectonic, volcanic, coastal, landslide-dammed, alluvial, cirque and artificial.

Lakes that came into existence by the accumulation of materials carried by glaciers, forming bars at the locations they melted and by the accumulation of waters behind these bars are generally called glacial lakes. The largest gla-cial lakes in the world are the Great Lakes in North America. Canada and Alaska are the regions where most of the glacial lakes in the world are found.

In Turkey, there are a large number of glacial lakes at the high elevations of Kaçkar Mountains, Aladağlar, Bolkar Mountains, Munzur Mountains, Uludağ, Karagöl Mountain, Süphan Mountain and Cilo Mountains. These are fresh wa-ter lakes that came into existence as a result of glacier movements in the last glacial period. The process in the creation of lakes millions of years ago is brief-ly as follows: The glaciers that moved downwards in the cold ages retreated to high elevations, melting in the temperate periods; they caused the disturbance of the soil on which they moved. With the repetition of this movement and the grinding weight for hundreds of years, the valley bottom became flat, and the glaciers carved depressions as some level areas at high elevations got abraded.

Page 7: RİZE: THE CITY OF GLACIAL LAKES · Rize hosts the biggest (Ambar Lake) and deepest (Deniz Lake) glacial lakes of Turkey. Most lakes, in terms of number, are found within the borders

The bottoms of these depressions were filled with argillaceous material and be-came watertight. In time, melting ice collected to form lakes. Since most of these lakes are at very high altitudes, examples with living beings in them are quite rare. A few examples where trouts that were put into lakes at lower altitudes can live are known. Çinili Lake and Karagöl in Bolkar Mountains host single point endemic creatures such as Toros frogs. The highest of the glacial lakes is at the summit of Süphan Mountain, which is at an altitude of 4000 meters. The largest is Ambar Lake, in the east of Kaçkar Mountains, and the deepest is 60-meter-deep Deniz Lake, in the south of Kaçkar Mountains. Yedigöller Tableland in Aladağlar region in Central Taurus was once invaded by glaciers. The tableland, where high summits looked like an island under the ice sheets, became what it is now and seven lakes remained of the glaciers. Glacial lakes are the cleanest water sources of Turkey. We may need these sources in the very near future; that is why they need to be put under protection (Assistant Professor Doctor Yıldırım GÜNGÖR, Atlas of Lakes in Turkey, Special Collection 2010).

In the meantime, let us mention that there are glaciers in the mountains above the permanent snow line, especially in Eastern and Southeastern Anatolia regions. Aladağlar, Ağrı, Bolkar, Erciyes and Kaçkar Mountains are the most important ar-eas where glaciers are seen. Generally, the biggest and the most famous of the valley, cap and cirque-type glaciers are on the 5165-meter Mount Ağrı, with its 10-km² ice cap, which is always there. The title of the biggest valley glacier in our country belongs to the 4-kilometer-long Uludoruk glacier in Southern Taurus.

GLACIAL LAKES OF RİZE

Rize bears justified proud of the title “the city that hosts the most glacial lakes of Turkey”. Rize, which competes with its counterparts in the world in this sense, em-inently deserves the attribute “The City of Glacial Lakes”. These natural beauties in blue, indigo blue, green or turquoise spread out in the valleys of the mountains like pearl drops. With its number nearing 200, the most glacial lakes are found in Kaçkar Mountains. The lakes, which played an important role in Kaçkar Mountains region’s having been declared a national park, are located in the basins below the summits of the mountains that lie in the direction of east-west.

Due to the cold climate conditions under the circumstances of the glacial period, one of the locations where glaciers forming in Anatolia’s high mountains widely developed is the East Black Sea Mountains. In this mountainous area, which has elevations over 3500 meters, the parts, especially above 2500 meters, are import-ant glaciation areas. We can count Kaçkar Mountains (Kaçkar, Krenek, Dübe), Verçenik Mountain (Sinançor, Dilektepe), Altıparmak Mountain Kırmızıgedik, Bulut Mountain Avusör, Soğanlı Mountain, Gavur Mountain Avliyana and Giresun Moun-tain Glacier as the cryal zones. Kavron, Çaymakçur, Davalı, Büyükçay, Avusör-Bu-lut and Kaçkar valleys are typical examples of glacial valleys located in the region.

Page 11: RİZE: THE CITY OF GLACIAL LAKES · Rize hosts the biggest (Ambar Lake) and deepest (Deniz Lake) glacial lakes of Turkey. Most lakes, in terms of number, are found within the borders

The typology of Kaçkar Mountains is the most import-ant factor that enables the formation of glacial lakes. zzGlaciers that settle down in the cirques opened on the slopes which are affected less by the sunlight form glacial lakes in the depression areas because they are fed better. Abundant precipitation, which is the charac-teristic feature of the region, fog, cold weather at high altitudes and snowmelt enable lakes to feed. Clouds formed by the humid air mass coming especially from the Black Sea create drizzle with very small but fre-quent drops, painting the valleys white at certain hours of the day. The depth of the lakes that sometimes has a low morainal levee is not much either. A small num-ber of glacial lakes in Rize are the landslide or alluvial type.

Rize hosts the biggest (Ambar Lake) and deepest (Deniz Lake) glacial lakes of Turkey. Most lakes, in terms of number, are found within the borders of Çamlıhemşin district. As in many regions of Anatolia, some lakes here are namesakes. Many lakes are called Karagöl (Black Lake) due to their depth, Yeşilgöl (Green Lake) due to their color, or Yıldız (Star)/Yıldızlı (Starry Lake) due to their capability of reflecting the sunlight. Let us remind you that the lakes can only be accessed on foot, and access to some is impossible or very difficult. Only Ovit Dağbaşı, Dipsiz and Büyük Akçaağıl in İkizdere district, Tobamzga, İntor and Ovit in Ardeşen district and Eğnaçor Lake in Çayeli district are among the lakes that can be accessed easily by car because they are on the roadside .

This guide book has been prepared with the help of detailed maps and a 9-year hiking experience in the region. As might be understood, it is almost impossible to access all the lakes. When the nameless lakes, set of lakes and the lakes in the list are taken into consid-eration, the number of lakes within the borders of Rize is around 215.

Never consider setting off alone when you plan your hiking activity. Make sure you take with you a guide who knows the region or a guide who is trained by Kaçkar Regional Directorate of National Parks. You can also make use of the travel agencies certified by TURSAB (Association of Turkish Travel Agencies).

The characteristic climatic feature of the region is continuous heavy fog and humidity that arises, especially at the morning hours. Taking into consideration that you might get wet, you can use leg warmers.

Most of the glacial lakes are situated in high locations. Therefore, you should be prepared for sudden changes in the weather. Remember the possibility that you can experience four seasons, all within a few hours.

Make sure to have a trash bag with you and certainly take back all your trash. Remember that the more respectful we are to the nature and the less we disturb its rhythm, the more boons it will give us generously.

Take into account that cell phones are out of coverage due to the mountainous structure of the region. Do some comprehensive research about your travel before you set off.

Make sure you have a compass, a GPS, a map and a poncho with you.

Never forget that there is a risk of getting lost due to heavy fog. If you are not sure about the route you follow, go back to the last point where you knew where you were.

Winter months in the region are severe. Do not organize a hiking activity in the very cold and heavily snowy winter periods. If you will, prefer very short routes. Check the weather forecast before setting off.

We should remind you that there is a considerable bear population in the area due to the geographical location of especially the Kaçkar Mountains region. Em-phasizing your being there by talking with the person next to you, singing, hanging a bell on your backpack, and whistling or blowing a whistle are the precautions that will minimize the risk of encountering wild life. All kinds of animals that notice your existence will hide, but will definitely watch your every move. Be calm and never panic.

If you camp in the areas where there is wild life, do not leave any food outside your tent. Human food is harmful to wild animals. Getting fed causes aggressive behavior in animals. Do not feed wild animals.

Respect every wild animal that you encounter and keep the necessary distance.

Consult people who are familiar with the region when deciding on your route.

You have the chance to swim in some of the lakes. However, you should take into account that lake waters will be very cold even in July and August.

Following the dirt road that continues for about 5 kilometers after the plateau, you will start hiking at the point where the route turns into a pathway. While proceeding in the guidance of the pathway, which rises from the right side of the creek, you will come across a waterfall. After passing by the waterfall, in about 500 meters, turn towards the creek on your left. Cross to the opposite side carefully. The pathway that ascends among rhododendrons will take you to a plain. When you walk towards the bluffs, a great blue lake surrounded by the summits of the mountains will pose for you down below.

First cross to the opposite side of Kireçli Creek, which comes from Katreç Lake, and then follow the pathway. When you reach the side of the creek that comes from Soğanlı Lake, cross to the opposite side and keep on walking.
