Congratulations,

You now own a piece of equipment that incorporates the latest in carpet cleaningtechnology. The RX-20’s features will almost certainly increase the productivity ofyou and your business, while decreasing the fatigue factor that may have preventedyou from going after some of the large cleaning jobs that are available to carpetcleaners and maintenance professionals today. With competition as strong as it is inmost communities, you have invested in not only a cleaning tool, but a marketing toolthat will enhance your professional image in every way.

The RX-20 is REVOLUTIONARY. Your foresight in purchasing this ultimate “cleaningmachine” will be rewarded with the knowledge that you care enough to give yourcustomer the maximum cleaning process available.

Using the RX-20 in your business will turn you into a professional carpet cleaningoperator, rather than a professional laborer.

Once again, congratulations to another cleaning professional who will not wait fortomorrow, and will not have to compete against the RX-20. The competition willhave to try and compete with you!

An Evolution That Had To HappenYour new RX-20 has been precision engineered to bring you to the state-of-the-art incarpet cleaning. In the past, a wand technician had to supply all the pressure andmotion to do the cleaning. The RX-20’s weight distribution and rotary motion enablethe technician to maneuver the unit easily with less fatigue and without back strain.

The RX-20’s electric motor drives its precision transmission which, in turn, rotates the star assembly. Cleaning solution is injected through the center of thegearbox shaft directly to the five spray jets. Soiled solution is then extracted from thecarpet by five cleaning heads and drawn through the aluminum exhaust manifold toyour cleaning system’s recovery tank.

NOTE: The operating temperature and pressure of the cleaning solution aswell as the vacuum power depends entirely on the type of cleaningsystem you use.

ConstructionThe base, exhaust manifolds, handle, gearbox housing and cleaning heads are all castor molded aluminum. Other parts are either metal or high impact plastic.

Preparation

1. Handle Adjustment: Loosen theadjustment knob located below theRX-20 label (turn counter-clockwiseto loosen, clockwise to tighten).Adjust the handle to a comfortableheight. Several adjustments maybe needed before a desirable oper-ating position is found.

NOTE: Most technicians have foundbetter control and less fatigue whenthe handle is in a low position justaround the hip line. There is anideal position for each person whichwill ensure the RX-20 will do thework instead of you.

2. Solution and Vacuum Hose Hookups: Your RX-20 is equipped with440 male quick connect for thesolution hose hookup and a twoinch OD vacuum hose inlet (refer tothe above illustration). A solutionhose with a 440 female quickconnect is required. The vacuuminlet requires a two inch ID vacuumhose for proper air flow with a truckmounted system.

OperationIMPORTANT: The vacuum hose mustbe in good condition to ensure maxi-mum airflow. If you do not have a 440female quick connect and can not findit locally, it can be ordered from theHydraMaster Parts Department. Call(206) 775-7276 and request part #052-051 (440 QC).

3a. Electrical Cord Hook Up (RegularRX-20): The 50 foot electrical cordon your RX-20 is a detachablethree-prong grounded line requiringa three-prong, 15 amp receptacle.A three-prong to two-prong adaptermay be used, providing its groundwire is properly attached to agrounded terminal.

- CAUTION -

Do not, under any circumstances, re-move the ground prong from your RX-20 power cord. Serious injury or deathmay result. To connect the power cordto the unit, insert the male twist-lockplug (from the unit) into the female end(on the power cord) and twist u n t i lthey are securely locked together.

3b. Electrical Cord Hook Up (HighSpeed RX-20): The 50 footelectrical cord on your RX-20 is apermanently attached, three-pronggrounded line requiring a three-prong, 15 amp receptacle.

To move forward and backward, position thehandle so thatthe unit remainsa stationary, thenpush forward orpull back. To fa-miliarize yourselfwith your RX-20,practice on ano p e n c a r p e t -ed area. Depressboth the solutiontrigger and motortrigger and movethe RX-20 slowlyin a three to five foot arc, as shown inCleaning Patterns on the following page.

- CAUTION -

Do not operate your RX-20 on drycarpets The friction generated by therevolving cleaning heads may damagefibers in the carpet.

Once you have become familiar with thespeed and movement of the machine, practice making it hover in one spot.(The hovering maneuver is useful forremoving stubborn stains, as well asremoving furniture indentations.)

Do not tilt machine sideways while mov-ing forward and backward. A loss ofcontrol may result in damage to the unitor location.

A three-prong to two-prong adaptermay be used providing its groundwire is properly attached to agrounded terminal.

- CAUTION -

Do not, under any circumstances, remove the ground prong from yourRX-20 power cord. Serious injury ordeath may result

Operating Instructions1. Control Functions: There are

control triggers located on eachside of the handle under the rubberhand grips. As you operate the RX-20, the trigger on your right-handside controls the electric motor thatdrives the cleaning heads. On theleft hand side, the trigger controlsthe high pressure solution spray. The air flows constantly while theRX-20 is in operation.

2. Maneuvering Your RX-20: YourRX-20 maneuvers like a rotary floormachine. To move the RX-20 tothe right, lift the handle slightly. The more you lift or lower thehandle, the faster the RX-20 willmove.

Cleaning InformationCleaning PatternsFor regular carpet cleaning use an over-lapping arc pattern three times over thesame area (two passes with solution andone pass for drying). When cleaningcarpers, first clean in circular pattern, then use the overlapping arc pattern todry the area.

Note: Dirtiest areas may require twoor more cleaning passes. Using eitherpattern, you should develop a comfort-able rhythm. To obtain maximum per-formance from your RX-20, move itslowly and deliberately with a 50% over-lap, giving it time to clean and extract.(Unlike a manual wand, the RX-20 isdoing the work you had to do in thepast) A steady pace rather than a fren-zied one will increase efficiency andproduction and decrease fatigue.

The Following Cautions ShouldBe Observed While Cleaning:1. DO NOT operate your RX-20 over

metal floor moldings. Damage to boththe molding and the cleaning head willresult.

2. DO NOT operate your RX-20 onhardwood floors.

3. DO NOT operate your RX-20 overloose or unraveled carpet seams. The cleaning head may catch andcause further damage.

4. DO NOT operate your RX-20 onconcrete floors. It will develop sharpedges on the extraction heads thatwill damage carpet fibers.

5. DO NOT clean over the edge of aloose carpet. Instead, clean only upto the edge. Damage may occurshould the extraction heads catchthe loose carpet.

Special InformationDuring the cleaning of some plush car-pets you may notice a “pilling” effect. With an RX-20, loose yarns form ballsand are kicked aside as the cleaningheads revolve. This is normal when ag-gressive cleaning or even normal vacu-uming takes place, as evidenced by anumber of dead, loose yarns in thevacuum cleaner bag. These loose yarns,in most cases, are short staple yarns orfiller yarns used to give the carpet adenser appearance. Because your RX-20 weighs approximately 90 pounds andrests on five four-inch cleaning heads, the yarns are not sucked up into thevacuum heads as they are with avacuum cleaner or old-style cleaningwand.

- CAUTION -

On older, rubberbacked, glued down car-pets that may be delaminating with age,the RX-20 may cause further delamina-tion. When in doubt, DO NOT use yourRX20.

Cleaning HintsA. Most cleaners customarily clean their

way out of an area or room. Withthe RX-20, it is possible to clean intoan area or room, as shown in theillustration below, so that the hosesare dragged behind you during thecleaning process rather than kickedout of the way as you back out ofan area. The “cleaning into” methodworks especially well in hallways orconfined areas

B. The RX-20 is a very aggressivecarpet cleaning power head and willleave the carpet with a freshly-cleaned appearance. The carpetshould be brushed or groomed afterthe cleaning process to remove anyswirl marks left behind.

The RX-20 has been very successful inrestoring badly matted traffic lanes infront of doorways and sofas. Even pivotareas can be brought back to life again,in most cases. “Cornrowing” in hall-ways can also be eliminated with mini-mal effort.

Machine Maintenance4. Remove the in-line solution filter

screen by unscrewing the 7/8 inchhex nut protruding from the back ofthe handle. Rinse under water toremove debris. If necessary, use atoothbrush to remove stubbornparticles.

5. Check the jet spray for evenness. An uneven spray will cause im-proper flow of the cleaning solution.

6. Remove the cleaning head. Itunscrews in the same direction itturns during operation (or clockwisewhen looking at it from the underside). Once you have loosened the

Good care and regular maintenance ofyour RX-20 will result in a long, depend-able life for the unit. Keep in mind thatyour RX-20 will be in full view of yourcustomer. An RX-20 that is dirty andunkempt in appearance can cause yourimage to suffer. You are offering yourcustomer the latest in cleaning technol-ogy. Therefore, it is important that yourcompany image reflect your desire togive your customer THE BEST.

The surface finish on your RX-20 is adurable, baked on epoxy coating and iseasily cleaned with a damp cloth. Tofurther protect the finish, a light coat ofgood silicon base polish should be ap-plied periodically.

Lubrication and maintenance play a keyrole in the life of your RX-20. Hence, the following daily and periodic mainte-nance steps must be followed. Trainyourself to maintain your unit on a regu-lar schedule until it becomes habitual.

Daily Maintenance1. Inspect the power cord for cuts,

breaks, etc. Repair as needed.

2. Inspect the vacuum hoses forbreaks or tears. Repair or replaceas necessary.

30 weight SAE motor oil. Also, puta few drops into the hub threads.

9. Coat the shaft with Pennz-Guard ora similar lubricant. Reinstall thevacuum head assembly onto theshaft by rotating it counter-clock-wise.

IMPORTANT: While rotating thevacuum head assembly in the counter-clock wise position, make sure that itspins freely all the way down. If itbegins to require the slightest finger tippressure, unscrew it and brush off thethreads. All it takes is the slightest grainof dirt or sand to obstruct the threads. If you turn too far onto a grain of dirt, the hub may become locked onto theshaft of the gearbox.

assembly, spin itoff with yourhands. If the clean-ing head is difficultto remove, you mayuse a ¾ inch socketwrench on the ex-posed center nut.To prevent the gearbox from turning, the output shaft will accept a 5/8 inchwrench just below the rotary union.Wash the cleaning heads and shroudassembly with a garden hose, beingcareful not to wet the electric motorassembly. Clean any lint buildup fromthe cleaning heads and vacuum hoses(lint buildup will restrict proper airflowand prolong drying time).

- CAUTION -

7. Clean off any debris that may haveaccumulated on the gearbox shaft or theinside threaded bore of the hub. Anaccumulation of debris here, if not re-moved, may damage the gearbox oilseal. This will result in loss of oil in thegearbox. If the gearbox is operated with-out oil, severe damage may occur.

8. Lubricate the felt vacuum seal ontop of the hub with a quality,

Transport and/or StorageWhenever your RX-20 is transported orstored, it is recommended that the clean-ing head be removed. The machine willthen sit flat on the floor and remain morestable, especially during transport.

Freeze Warning and ProtectionYour RX-20 can sustain damage fromfreezing, as can any equipment thatfunctions with the use of water. Caremust be taken to protect this tool fromfreezing just as you do your other equip-ment. To protect it from freezing, sim-ply blow air from a gas station air hosethrough the solution quick connect withthe valve open. This will blow all waterfrom the valve, solution line, rotary unionand jet assembly. Open and close thevalve several times to ensure that allwater is removed.

Periodic MaintenanceRegular RX-20 only:

Check the oil in the gearbox. Theunit must be on a level surface toget an accurate reading. Changethe oil in the gearbox every 100hours. Use 80-90 weight gear oil toreduce friction and allow the gearbox to run at a cooler temperature. With the unit level, drain the oil. Nextfill the gearbox with new oil at theoil port on the front until it dribblesout of the inspection port.

NOTE: Normal wear and tear on yournew gearbox will cause small amountsof metal splinters to rub loose duringthe first 10 hours of use. Therefore,we recommend that you change the oilafter 10 hours, and after that every 100hours.

High speed RX-20:Check the oil the gearbox. Checkthe oil level in the gearbox on amonthly basis. This is a permanentlylubricated gearbox. You do not needto change the oil. However, main-taining the proper oil level is impor-tant. To check the oil level, removethe vent plug and look into the gearbox. Turn the star until you can seethe inspection hole in the gear. Withthe RX-20 sitting flat on a table orthe floor, the oil level should be upto, but not above, the middle of thegear. If oil needs to be added, use aquality 80-90 weight gear oil.

NOTE: When checking the oil level inthe gearbox, you can use a toothpick asa dip stick. The oil level should read3/8th of an inch.

RepairHigh Pressure Valve Assembly:The valve assembly’s moving parts willeventually wear out it time. Its repair orreplacement is a relatively simpleoperation.

1. Remove the 440 male quick connect(A) with a wrench.

2. Remove the five Allen head screws(B) in the back plate on the handleand lift the back panel off.

3. Disconnect the stainless steel hose(C) from the bottom of the valveassembly.

4. Remove the bolt (D) holding the trigger.5. Remove the two bolts (E) holding the

valve assembly in the handle and pullout.

6. The valve may now be rebuilt or re-placed.

- CAUTION -

If the valve has been frozen, inspect it forleakage before reinstalling the back plate.
