SOLUTION

VMware’s partner NTT Czech Republic completely transformed RWS Moravia’s digital infrastructure and enhanced the security layer by deploying VMware NSX as a superstructure over VMware vSphere and the existing hardware infrastructure.

IMPACT

• E ective preparation of security templates tied to the services and applications, not IP addresses

• Strengthening the security of the data centre

• Secure an easier access to the private cloud both for employees and collaborators

RWS Moravia adapts the software and products of the most famous global companies and helps companies to reach more customers around the world. However their digital infrastructure became out of date - not meeting operational and safety requirements, not ready for automation or hybrid clouds. As the best way to be prepared for any future digital innovations, it was decided to deploy SDN with VMware NSX. The new environment enables the timely and e ective preparation of security templates and as everything can be tied to the services and applications, not IP addresses, it also enables infrastructure automation.

RWS Moravia helps companies to reach more customers around the world. Its job is localization – high quality, specialized translations tailored to target customers and local conditions. RWS Moravia started in 1990 in the Czech Republic with two people as a small family business. Now it has over 1,500 employees worldwide – in North and South America, Asia and Europe and is one of the top worldwide localization companies. They adapt the software and products of the most famous global companies to more than 330 languages. So that everyone can comfortably use them every day, anywhere. In fact, currently more than two billion people use products localized by RWS Moravia.

The ChallengeRWS Moravia’s success has always been linked to the use of the latest technology. The environment in which the company does business is increasingly dynamic. Previously, it took several months to localize the English version of the product; today, customers expect translations within 24 hours, sometimes they even want to have localized content available online to users within 6 hours. The company’s corporate strategy also focuses on the best adaptation of its solutions to customer requirements. This is, on one hand, the key for its growth, but on the other hand, from the IT point of view it leads to a great deal of variations and integrations of their and customer systems. This implies high demand and rapid changes in a relatively complex infrastructure.

In the long term RWS Moravia relies on VMware solutions – the company began the virtualization process already in 2008, in 2013 they deployed VMware vCloud Suite and built a private cloud. However they noted that their digital infrastructure becomes obsolete – not meeting operational and safety requirements, not ready for automation or hybrid clouds. the company s private cloud. This is absolutely crucial for RWS Moravia, as more than 1,500 of its own employees and more than 10,000 freelance translators work on customer orders every day.

The majority of focus so far has been on identifying and reacting to threats, the security was not focused on innovation in reducing the attack surface – this had to be changed. Moreover as the online world and the use of software continue to grow rapidly, further development of the entire market, in which RWS Moravia wants to maintain its leading position, can be expected and RWS Moravia thus has to be always one step ahead. The infrastructure must be prepared to support the business innovation and growth. “Only new technologies enable us to continually accelerate deliveries to our customers and control required quality while reducing costs,” explains Přemek Vala, CIO at RWS Moravia.

Action VMware Partner NTT Czech Republic analysed the needs and the situation of the company’s IT. The aim was to deliver highly virtualized infrastructure and a comprehensive cloud management platform, providing unprecedented visibility and protection for applications, data and users from endpoint to cloud. Modernized setup was to help delivering secured IT infrastructure and application services with the agility and control demanded by digital business and also to be fully prepared for disaster recovery.

It was decided to completely transform the digital infrastructure and enhance the security layer by deploying software defi ned network with VMware NSX Data centre as a superstructure over VMware vSphere and the existing Cisco and Check Point security hardware infrastructure. This solution would also prepare the company for any future digital innovations. With VMware the customer can benefi t from the ability to deliver dynamic capacity, consolidate or migrate on-premises infrastructure, or develop and test new applications – all in highly secured environment. This fl exibility helps gain the freedom to choose the best platform, landing spot, or destination for the applications, whether they reside on or o -premises.

ImpactAs the overall improvement of data centre security was the most critical part for RWS Moravia, the deployment of VMware NSX helped with a complete micro-segmentation of the environment. The introduction of object and policy based administration enabled the deployment of the security groups principle, which proved to be a great added value for internal IT. RWS Moravia has gained a standard based dynamic management of security rules and their much greater freedom and easier setup. The deployment of NSX in its primary data centres also enables an easy way to use hybrid clouds for RWS Moravia in the future – starting with part of the development where Microsoft Azure public cloud is used.

The new environment enables the timely and e ective preparation of security templates and as everything can be tied to the user, not the device, greater freedoms for the users themselves as well. The deployment of NSX has strengthened the security of the data centre, application security, and has made it easier to access for customers, but especially for employees and collaborators – they usually access the private cloud of RWS Moravia from home. High security of the environment also ensures the security of the data itself – employees do not have to worry about projects in progress and customers

“The main advantage of VMware NSX is meeting the high demands on data centre security without compromising performance.”

about their stored information. In addition, everyone benefi ts from better availability and continuity of IT services.

“The main advantage of VMware NSX is meeting the high demands on data centre security without compromising performance,” says Přemek Vala, CIO at RWS Moravia. “With a virtualized network we have also set the foundation for fully automated infrastructure and we can respond quickly to the needs of our customers and software development teams and speed up and streamline our processes.” RWS Moravia can continue to further connect the contemporary world and help its clients reach more customers around the world in their own native language.

Looking AheadAfter the implementation of NSX in both primary data centres located in the Czech Republic, NSX will be further deployed in RWS Moravia’s secondary data centres in China, Japan and Argentina. Because the deployment of NSX was the last shard in the SDDC mosaic, automated IT provisioning can now be considered.

RWS Moravia is also currently preparing an internal infrastructure for running containers on the Kubernetes platform. For this new infrastructure, they also plan to use VMware technologies, specifi cally VMware PKS Enterprise with NSX-T. In addition, further development of VDI can be expected in the future so as the company can deliver its employees and collaborators the most e ective and easy way to work on their tasks to even further facilitate customer orders.
