Rutherglen occupies a special little corner of north east Victoria, fringed by the mighty Murray River to the north, the Victorian alps to the south, with the fertile expanses of the Murray Valley stretching out to the west.

The region is home to one of Australia’s most historic and enduring wine regions, with wine-making a feature of the Rutherglen landscape since the mid 1850’s. Today the region is characterised by a number of small, family owned wineries, many of which have made wine in the district for five and six generations.

The region is famed for producing Rutherglen Muscat and Rutherglen Topaque, glorious fortified wines often described as the world’s richest. However visitors to the region will also be thrilled to find an incredible array of red, white and sparkling wines, such is the accommodating nature of Rutherglen’s climate.

Of course where you find great wines great food is never far behind. The region boasts quality eateries at all levels, from hatted restaurants to winery cafes and traditional country pubs, all eager to showcase the sensational regional produce on their doorstep.

Our great outdoors is just as appealing with recreational cycling a highlight. In fact the commencing stage of the Murray to Mountains Rail Trail links Rutherglen with nearby Wahgunyah. Fantastic golf clubs lie just a hefty seven iron away and the Murray River provides the perfect backdrop for boating, camping and fishing for the elusive Murray Cod.

And of course we can accommodate you in style, from enchanting Victorian era country homes, luxurious Bed and Breakfasts, well appointed modern suites and everything in between. So come and see for yourself what makes Rutherglen, Wahgunyah and surrounds so special...we’ve saved you a seat at the table.

tHe DURIF tRAILFew regions share an affinity with a grape variety quite like Rutherglen and Durif. Since its introduction to Rutherglen in 1908, the region’s winemakers have developed their understanding of this unique red variety and forged an enviable reputation for full bodied, flavoursome and age-worthy red wines.

Today just about every winery in Rutherglen grows Durif and you will see literally dozens of examples ranging from the traditional full bodied reds to more supple modern styles, complex port style wines and even sparkling reds! Be sure to include Warrabilla, Anderson, Stanton & Killeen, All Saints Estate and Morris Wines on your Durif Trail.

tHe WoRLD’s RICHest WInesAbove all Rutherglen is known as home to the world’s richest wines. We’ll leave it to noted wine writer Max Allen to sum up the region’s most famous export -

‘There’s no denying that the twin peaks of Rutherglen wine are the luscious fortified Topaque and Muscat. A few years ago the Winemakers of Rutherglen developed a four tier system of quality classification for their Muscat. At the base of the pyramid is ‘Rutherglen’ Muscat - youthful, easy drinking, everyday wine, and at the top of the pyramid are tiny quantities of ‘Rare’ Muscat - unbeatable, extraordinary, powerful, died-and-gone-to-heaven-deliciousness. When you taste a top ‘Rare’ Muscat you can’t help feeling that you’re tasting perfection. I mean, really; how could wine get any better than this?’ Max Allen.

oLD VInes, GReAt WInesRutherglen played a vital role in the early Australian wine industry, with the region acting as the gateway for many cuttings arriving from the vineyards of Europe. Today many of these heritage varieties are still in production, with visitors able to sample a little old vine magic at many of the region’s Cellar Doors. Look for Buller Wines heroic Mondeuse, Cinsault (also known as Blue Imperial) at Lake Moodemere Vineyard & Morris Wines, the classic Beaujolais grape Gamay at Pfeiffer Wines, old vine Cabernet Franc at St. Leonards Vineyard, Malbec at Campbells and Cofield and complex Shiraz at Jones Winery, made from 100 year old vines.

We DARe to Be DIFFeRentThe curiosity of our grape- growers and winemakers is not easily satisfied. With our warm, continental climate proving ideal for countless grape varieties, our wineries continue to push the boundaries with new and emerging styles. Look for Rhone inspired Marsanne, Roussanne & Viognier, Italianite Pinot Grigio, Fiano and Sangiovese, sultry Spanish Tempranillo, and numerous Portuguese varieties, used for both perfumed table wines and classic Vintage Port styles. Rutherglen Estates, Calico Town, Valhalla, Scion and King Jack should all be on your itinerary if you are keen to take a walk on the wild side.

d i s c o v e r o u r WINE & SOuL

With a winemaking history stretching back more than 150 years it’s clear that roots run deep in Rutherglen, both in the region’s vineyards and the families who tend them. Our region is characterised by small, boutique family owned wineries, many of whom have a lineage of four, five and even six generations on the land. This strong sense of family and enduring commitment to the land is ever-present as you tour the region, and more often than not the friendly face greeting you at Cellar Door will be part of the family. Today the established names of the region like Morris, Campbell, Chambers & Buller are joined by innovative newcomers who are just beginning to forge their own history. Like many of the wines found in the region it makes for a nice blend!

The region’s Cellar Doors are almost as diverse as the wines themselves, with architecture ranging from grand castles, to converted stables and rustic sheds. The one thing common to all is the friendly, informative folk behind the counter who are only too happy to share their passion for their product.

LIQUID GoLD... A WIne ReVoLUtIonThe Rutherglen wine region grew from humble beginnings in the mid 1850’s, to become the cornerstone of the Australian wine industry less than a generation later. By the mid 1880’s more than fifty working vineyards covering some 3000 acres positioned Rutherglen as a power in the domestic wine industry, producing more than a quarter of Australia’s national drop. The bubble would burst as the vine aphid phylloxera spread through the district in the early 1900’s, driving all but the most hardy from the industry. With phylloxera resistant rootstock, the wine industry would begin to grow again and further cement the region’s global reputation for table and fortified wines.

In the 1960’s Rutherglen would again be at the forefront of a major development in the industry as wine tourism emerged. At the time Rutherglen had 13 of the 21 registered Cellar Doors in Victoria. Today we welcome you with more than twenty wineries, many of whom trace their roots right back to the origins of our industry in the mid 1800’s.

eXPLoRe oUR FAsCInAtInG HeRItAGe...Prior to European settlement the Whroo people (a branch of the Bangerang tribe) were prominent in the Rutherglen region, particularly Lake Moodemere and large tracts of the Murray River. Following favourable reports from Major Mitchell who passed through the district in 1836, early pioneers took up large cattle runs in the district, among them John Foord in Wahgunyah, Lindsay Brown at Gooramadda and Edwin Sanger north of the Murray in modern day Corowa.

In the spring of 1860 gold was struck in what is now Main Street Rutherglen, and the ensuing gold rush would see more than 30,000 people flock to the district hoping to strike it rich. The township that sprung up was originally named the Wahgunyah Diggings, then Barkly after a governor of the day, and finally Rutherglen, after John Wallace (owner of the Star Hotel) offered to shout the bar if he could name the town after his hometown of Rutherglen, Scotland...and so for the price of a few beers Rutherglen, Victoria was born. The connection to the land runs deep in Rutherglen. For generations our region’s farming families have been living off the land, and developing their understanding of what suits our unique climate. This is a region where neighbours still drop by with baskets of produce from the garden, or a dozen fresh eggs. The virtues of living seasonally and regionally are truly ingrained.

Today the traditional practises of grazing, cropping and dairy farming have been joined by olive orchards, beehives, specialty meats, aquaculture and so much more, resulting in a rich and truly diverse offering. What cannot be sourced immediately in region is never too far away. With the fertile Murray Valley to the west and the cooler Alpine Valleys to the south we are perfectly positioned to enjoy a seemingly bottomless food bowl. And of course no one appreciates this more than our region’s chefs. With such an abundance of fresh seasonal produce on their doorstep, you only need pick up a menu at any of our quality cafes or restaurants to truly appreciate the diversity of the region. So bring your sense of culinary adventure, bring your appetite, and immerse yourself in the flavours of Rutherglen.
