WHy did they start exploring?- Expands Russia’s geographical territories.- Exploration of the most eastern european territories

turned nation into an empire (through colonization).- The explorers also brought back many furs for their

people.- Wanted to expand their colonies and potentially colonize

other areas in the world.

Who was their leader?- Peter I the Great ruled the Tsardom of

Russia and later the Russian Empire from May 7th 1682 until his death in 1725

- Through a number of successful wars he expanded the Tsardom into a much larger empire that became a major European power

- Peter's reforms made a lasting impact on Russia and many institutions of Russian government traced their origins to his reign

WHen were they exploring?- Russian expansion eastward began in 1552.- In 1639 Russian explorers reached the Pacific Ocean.- In the 1580s to the 1640s, Russians explored and

conquered almost the whole of Siberia.- The Russian colonization of the Americas happened between

1732 and 1867.- Europeans first sighted the Alaskan coastline in 1732.

- In 1725, Emperor Peter the Great ordered a navigator named Vitus Bering to explore the North Pacific for potential colonization.

- Russia quickly developed the maritime fur trade in 1760.- Proving to be a lucrative enterprise, it captured the attention of

other European nations.

- By the middle of the 19th century, profits from the Russia’s American colonies were severely declining.- Competition with the British Hudson’s Bay Company had brought the sea

otter to near extinction, while the population of bears, wolves and foxes were also depleting.

- Eventually, retaining Russia’s American colonies became too expensive, and they sold Alaska to the United States for $7.2 million in 1867.

What Did They Do With These Areas?● From Arkhangelsk to the mouth of the Ob River, from the mouth of the Ob to the mouth

of the Yenisey, from the mouth of the Lena River to the mouth of the Yenisey and from the mouth of the Lena River to Chukchi Peninsula and Kamchatka. Resulted in abundant material in the fields of natural history, geography, cartography, history, archaeology, ethnography and linguistics both in the form of written documents and of objects of nature and culture.

WHat Was Their Relationship With The Indigenous People Like? ● Due to poor treatment from the Russian Government. The Indigenous of the Russian North

has experienced high infant mortality rates, low life expectancy, high homicide rates, suicide and substance abuse problems, and erosion of linguistic and cultural traditions.
